Chapter Index

Gu Shenyuan didn’t know how he managed to walk over. He tremblingly reached out to check Ye Qingyun’s breathing. Only after realizing that Ye Qingyun still had a faint breath did sensation return to his body.

Following Gu Shenyuan’s movement, Ye Qingyun’s eyelids fluttered, and he slowly, weakly half-opened his eyes. The way he looked suggested he might close his eyes again at any moment, never to open them again.

Gu Shenyuan belatedly noticed the pain in his own body. That was the punishment from the Bloodline restriction for failing to protect Ye Qingyun when Ye Qingyun was injured.

This physical pain was far less agonizing than the fear that made his heart feel like it was about to explode. He half-crouched down and used his trembling hands to lift Ye Qingyun.

“I’ll take you for treatment,” Gu Shenyuan’s usually steady voice carried an almost imperceptible sob. “Don’t close your eyes. I’ll take you for treatment. You will be fine, you will be fine.”

Ye Qingyun shook his head slightly. He looked at Gu Shenyuan and reached out a hand toward him.

How could Gu Shenyuan let Ye Qingyun exert himself reaching out now? He lowered his head proactively, allowing Ye Qingyun to easily wrap his arm around his neck.

Ye Qingyun loosely held Gu Shenyuan with one arm, then pressed Gu Shenyuan’s head down and kissed his lips.

This kiss had nothing to do with sweetness. Gu Shenyuan only tasted a mouthful of blood—blood from Ye Qingyun’s mouth, transferred to his through the kiss.

Gu Shenyuan didn’t spit it out, nor did he even consider that option. Instead, he swallowed the mouthful of blood.

Why was there so much blood? How much pain must Ye Qingyun be in right now?

Gu Shenyuan’s mind was in chaos. He ended the kiss, wanting to rush Ye Qingyun to the hospital so he could be safe and sound, no longer looking like this.

“Haha.” Ye Qingyun suddenly let out a weak, abrupt laugh. “See? You still fell for it, didn’t you? Does it still hurt?”

    Gu Shenyuan: “…What?”

Ye Qingyun’s voice was faint, like a wisp of smoke, yet tinged with amusement: “Your body, it must have hurt quite a bit earlier because of my injury, right? Does it still hurt now?”

Gu Shenyuan felt as if a basin of ice water had been poured over him from head to toe, leaving him instantly chilled.

    …He didn’t hurt anymore.

    He didn’t hurt at all.

Even though Ye Qingyun was still so severely injured, he felt no punishment whatsoever.

“The liquor I mentioned before wasn’t the Antidote… The real Antidote is still on me.” Ye Qingyun closed his eyes wearily, speaking intermittently, clearly struggling, but the corners of his mouth were still upturned. “But now, you can’t pour it out, because I… already fed it to you. Haha.”

Countless thoughts flashed through Gu Shenyuan’s mind. There was so much he wanted to say, so much he wanted to ask, but in the end, only one sentence reached his lips: “…We’re going to the hospital.”

“It’s no use. Didn’t you guess?” Ye Qingyun mercilessly exposed Gu Shenyuan’s denial, shattering the beautiful fantasy in his heart and forcing him to face reality. “I’m a 3S-level Mental Strength user. After destroying that Ability Inhibitor, I… couldn’t hold on. I can’t be saved.”

Gu Shenyuan fell silent. Ye Qingyun continued: “Taking me to the hospital is useless, and there’s… no hospital nearby anyway. So why don’t you… just chat with me? I want to talk to you quietly.”

The arms Gu Shenyuan used to hold Ye Qingyun began to tremble uncontrollably. He leaned against a tree and sat down, letting Ye Qingyun rest against his chest.

Ye Qingyun asked, “Without the Bloodline restriction, will you still listen to me?”

    “…Yes.”

Ye Qingyun was very satisfied with this answer. He instructed Gu Shenyuan: “After I die, live well. Eat on time, sleep on time, understand?”

Ye Qingyun’s voice grew softer and softer toward the end. He struggled to open his eyes, looking at Gu Shenyuan with eyes that were no longer bright.

Gu Shenyuan held Ye Qingyun’s hand, saying nothing.

He didn’t need to eat on time or sleep on time.

The road to the Underworld was too lonely for one person. He couldn’t bear for Ye Qingyun to walk it alone. He would accompany Ye Qingyun, no matter where they went.

Ye Qingyun whispered, “This life of yours… was exchanged for mine. Are you really going to… destroy it?”

Gu Shenyuan’s breathing quickened slightly. Ye Qingyun reached out a hand and gently pressed it against Gu Shenyuan’s beating heart, speaking in a voice that felt like it could be scattered by the wind: “Before you think about destroying it, think carefully—this is my life. Do you really want… to make it disappear?”

Transparent, colorless drops of water fell onto Ye Qingyun’s cheek. Ye Qingyun blinked with effort, and his opened eyes slowly closed again: “You said you’d still listen to me. I… command you not to die. Live well, and wait for…”

    Wait for what?

Gu Shenyuan didn’t know, because the person speaking was no longer able to complete the sentence.

“…Qingyun?” Gu Shenyuan stroked Ye Qingyun’s cheek. He tried to wipe away the moisture on Ye Qingyun’s face, but the more he wiped, the more tears flowed, impossible to dry. “I’ll take you back. We’ll find a beautiful, peaceful place to settle down. I’ll stay with you forever, letting you supervise me eating and sleeping, okay?”

Ye Qingyun would surely like that kind of relaxed life. Whenever there was new technology or new research, he could read it to Ye Qingyun and make him happy.

He also had to prepare the clothes Ye Qingyun would wear every day, ensuring they were different every day, throughout all four seasons.

Ye Qingyun was beautiful; he looked good no matter what he wore, even if he was draped in a sack. But Gu Shenyuan couldn’t neglect him because of that. The best, most luxurious styles—if others had them, Ye Qingyun must have them too.

Under his protection, Ye Qingyun would accompany him through the seasons, through thousands of days and nights, until he grew old. Then, he would dig a deep grave, build a coffin large enough for both him and Ye Qingyun to lie in, and bury himself and Ye Qingyun forever.

    They would always be together.

Gu Shenyuan’s chaotic thoughts suddenly stopped. In his arms, Ye Qingyun’s body began to change.

Several strands of red light seeped out from within Ye Qingyun, piercing through his skin.

Gu Shenyuan had seen this red light not long ago; it was identical to the light that appeared when the barrier was shattered.

The light expanded continuously, and wherever the red light penetrated Ye Qingyun’s body, the flesh and blood turned into ashes.

The terror in Gu Shenyuan’s heart expanded infinitely. He used every method he could think of in his current state, trying to protect Ye Qingyun and prevent him from being harmed further.

It was useless. The light surged out faster and faster. As soon as it left Ye Qingyun’s body, it completely dissipated and vanished.

And just like that light, Ye Qingyun also dissipated into the world.

Gu Shenyuan lowered his head, still maintaining the posture of holding someone, but his arms were empty. Nothing remained.
