    Chapter 9

Just when the cadets thought the matter was going to be dropped, Lian Xu spoke.

    “The test continues.”

Lian Xu still decided to use the instrument for testing, but he did not agree to use He Yu as a calibration tool standing on the platform. Instead, he chose to extract pheromones to conduct a more precise pheromone threshold test for everyone.

Extracting pheromones for threshold testing requires a laboratory process, and the accuracy of the results can reach 99.99%. Star Tower possesses the Imperial Planet’s most authoritative and cutting-edge medical team. If the cadets didn’t trust the precision of the instrument before them, they would surely trust the most advanced medical testing methods.

As for the test results, they would take at least three days to come out.

Three days was nothing; Lian Xu could afford to wait.

“Everyone line up and proceed to the Medical Center. Pheromones will be extracted in the order of the roster for the pheromone threshold test. In three days, I will announce the final results here. If the test results do not match the results you submitted upon entering the base, you will be dealt with according to Star Tower regulations.”

Star Tower Regulation 79: Any officer who conceals the true threshold of their pheromones or privately alters test results shall be stripped of their military status and barred from participating in any assessment for ten years.

“Of course, you may also choose to confess now, and I will give you an opportunity to make amends.”

What kind of opportunity that was, Lian Xu didn’t say, but it certainly wouldn’t be anything pleasant.

“Since Group Leader Lian is announcing it, does that mean if a problem really arises, you might turn a blind eye?” Qu Baijing, thinking himself clever, spoke rashly.

The others felt their vision darken, regretting having defended him just moments ago.

Having escalated to this point, Group Leader Lian had already decided to use pheromone extraction for testing, clearly offering them a way out. But Qu Baijing insisted on not taking it, choosing instead to confront Group Leader Lian.

Some were already questioning how someone so foolish managed to pass the entrance exam.

Lian Xu hadn’t expected Qu Baijing to be so aggressive: “Then who do you think is suitable to announce the results?”

Qu Baijing lowered his head, adopting the posture of a victim: “You are the chief examiner, so naturally, your word is final. What… what use is what I say?”

    Everyone fell silent.

Lian Xu clenched his fists, his knuckles cracking.

If this person weren’t his cadet, and weren’t an Omega, he might have already kicked him.

What kind of thoughtless nonsense was he spouting?

He suspected that Qu Baijing’s mind was filled entirely with romance and nothing useful.

He Yu was also stunned by Qu Baijing’s statement; being foolish to an extraordinary degree could also be considered a talent.

Lian Xu suddenly smiled: “How about this? To make the test results more convincing, the Commander himself will come forward to announce the results to everyone. How does that sound?”

The cadets looked up at the smiling Group Leader Lian, finding that smile unsettling and eerie.

He Yu even took two steps back, maintaining a five-meter distance from Lian Xu. The last time he saw him smile like that was a year ago.

The night before leaving for the battlefield, Yin Zhuo was in an emergency meeting with the Inner Cabinet, and Lian Xu was alone at his residence. He Yu barged in without warning, only to find the Omega emerging from the shower wrapped in a bath towel. The towel wasn’t wrapped tightly, exposing a large expanse of white skin on his chest.

He Yu was stunned and forgot to look away in time.

“Does it look good?” Lian Xu asked him with a forced, unnatural smile.

He froze on the spot and subconsciously replied, “It looks good.” Immediately after, a chilling gust of wind swept past the Alpha.

Lian Xu’s smooth foot struck He Yu’s face. With a thud, the Alpha was sent flying backward, hitting the wall. His jaw was dislocated by the kick, and he spent half a month recovering in the Recuperation Pod.

That was the first time He Yu had been kicked by an Omega hard enough to require two weeks of recovery, so the memory was vivid. By the time he snapped back to reality, the cadets had already lined up and were walking toward the Medical Center.

He Yu didn’t follow. Instead, he glanced at Lian Xu and asked, puzzled, “Why go to all this trouble? You are the chief examiner; your word is final. How did you let yourself be manipulated by a bunch of greenhorns?”

Lian Xu didn’t think this elaborate approach was unwarranted. He wanted the cadets to accept the test results wholeheartedly, without being able to find a single flaw.

Especially that Omega—he clearly harbored hostility toward him, and his goal was obvious. He wanted Lian Xu to make a fool of himself publicly and apologize.

Thinking of this, Lian Xu gave He Yu a look of ambiguous meaning: “That Omega… is very good-looking, but his intelligence is lacking.”

    “Hmm?”

He Yu turned to look at him, seeing a faint sadness hidden in those deep amber eyes. When it came to overthinking, perhaps no one could surpass this seemingly aloof and steady Group Leader of the Military Operations Group.

“I reasonably suspect that your intelligence is also lacking,” he said.

Lian Xu smiled: “I’m more like a normal person than you are.”

At least he wouldn’t fall for such a dim-witted, incoherent, rash, deliberately provocative, and aggressive white lotus.

    He Yu: “…”

He felt innocent. Sometimes, it wasn’t that he wanted to provoke the Omega; it was just that Lian Xu made people want to bully him, especially with that mouth of his.

“Let’s go, to the Medical Center.” He Yu turned to leave first, but as soon as he took a step, he heard Lian Xu’s sarcastic tone.

“What’s the rush? I’ve already made arrangements; the people at the Medical Center will handle the testing properly. Besides, they should only be halfway there. Why are you so eager to go? Are you worried someone is being bullied?”

He Yu was somewhat helpless: “Why should I worry about them? Is your mind constantly filled with this kind of useless garbage? Do you have any awareness of your role as the Group Leader of the Military Operations Group? Moreover… as the fiancée of the Inner Cabinet Prime Minister, shouldn’t you have a different reaction?”

    “What reaction?”

He Yu blurted out without thinking: “Heavy jealousy?”

“Is there a connection between the two?” Lian Xu’s smile vanished, slightly provoked by the statement.

He Yu thought seriously for a moment. No connection. He didn’t know why, but his mouth had no filter, and the words just came out. Perhaps he wanted to see the other person explode, but he realized belatedly that the remark was inappropriate.

The fiancée of the Inner Cabinet Prime Minister… Tsk, truly enviable, and truly annoying.

Heavy jealousy? No, that didn’t seem right either. Someone as self-possessed as Lian Xu wouldn’t possibly be jealous of an insignificant Omega.

He licked his lips and said casually, “Never mind, let’s go.”

Lian Xu didn’t move. That stubbornness had been triggered, and he insisted that He Yu give him a reasonable explanation.

“He Yu, why do you think I’m jealous? Also, as the fiancée of the Inner Cabinet Prime Minister, what reaction do you think is appropriate for me?”

He Yu thought, Oh no, I’ve really angered him now. Lian Xu was covered in thorns, and he didn’t know where to start to smooth him over, which only made him more frustrated.

“Alright, don’t be mad. You know I have a loose tongue, don’t you?”

Lian Xu hummed: “Since you know what your problem is, stop barking randomly.”

Damn it, I really gave him too much credit! He Yu walked up to Lian Xu in two strides, swung his arm around his neck, pinned his head under his armpit, and started walking toward the barbed wire in the middle of the training field.

Lian Xu didn’t react in time and was dragged stumbling to the center of the field, his back slamming against the barbed wire. As soon as he turned his head, he saw He Yu leaning in, pressing his knee against Lian Xu’s leg, and kissing him firmly.

He had never been kissed before and didn’t realize a kiss could be so fierce. The Alpha sucked and bit at his lips, occasionally using his tongue to prod his teeth. Pheromones uncontrollably spilled out, overwhelming the Omega’s scent gland.

He Yu kissed him violently and haphazardly, as if eager to devour him. Calling him a dog would be an understatement. A puppy at least wags its tail at its owner and licks their wounds, but the Alpha before him only seemed intent on biting his lips like a madman.

After a moment, the Alpha stopped his aggressive movements and stared at Lian Xu with a look of satisfaction.

“You didn’t open your mouth when kissing. Is that how your fiancé taught you, Sister-in-law?”

Lian Xu raised his eyelids, his chest slightly rising and falling, still recovering: “I didn’t dare open my mouth. I was afraid of catching rabies.”

“Is that so?” He Yu rubbed his wrist. “Then, since I’ve bitten you so many times, how many doctors will you have to see and how many vaccines will you need?”

Lian Xu patted his shoulder: “Don’t worry. My immunity is strong. Being bitten a few times by a low-grade mad dog like you isn’t enough to warrant such caution.”

“That won’t do. Even a low-grade mad dog is still a mad dog.”

“Yes, it’s good that you know what you are.”

Lian Xu pushed He Yu away. Just as he was about to run, he was pulled back by the wrist, his back hitting the barbed wire again. The cold, hard wire pressed against his back, causing a slight pain.

The long, fierce kiss nearly stole all his breath.

He Yu’s arm was like a solid iron clamp, tightly encircling his waist, pinning him firmly in place. His other hand, however, with a paradoxical gentleness, covered the Omega’s vulnerable scent gland, his calloused thumb lightly massaging the hot skin.

    “Lian Xu…”

The Alpha’s scorching breath sprayed against the Omega’s ear, his low voice mixed with a raw, almost uncontrolled rasp.

“What are you barking about… mmph…”

He Yu didn’t expect any pleasant words from him; he just wanted to call his name, hoping to pry open a gap to enter. The end of his sentence was completely blocked back into his throat, and their tongues unexpectedly charged into the fortress, tightly intertwining.

Lian Xu’s legs went weak, and he nearly slid down the wire mesh. In his blurred consciousness, he felt the pressure on his posterior scent gland suddenly increase, followed by a dangerously thrilling sensation.

    “Why run?”

“If a dog bites you, don’t you run?”

He Yu smiled and deepened the highly aggressive kiss.

A moment later… he released the Omega’s swollen lips. As he pulled away, a thin, ambiguous strand of silver saliva stretched between them, flashing momentarily in the sunlight.

“Why so fierce? Can’t you say something nice?”

Lian Xu pushed him away and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. The corners of his eyes were slightly red, and a single cowlick on top of his head had somehow stood up. He looked fiercely angry as he glared at the Alpha: “What is there to say to a mad dog?”

He Yu had tasted sweetness during the kiss, which had secretly smoothed his ruffled feathers. His mood was now pleasant, and he ignored Lian Xu’s thorny words, finding his stubborn demeanor somewhat cute. He raised his hand to smooth down the standing cowlick.

He had never seen it before. He truly was a little wildcat that only bristled when thoroughly provoked.

A moment later, He Yu released the Omega’s lips, gently rubbing his hot scent gland, his Adam’s apple bobbing: “Why can’t Yin Zhuo smell your pheromones?”

“Your memory seems rather poor,” Lian Xu said.

“Don’t you know whether my memory is good or not?” He Yu smiled. “I remember. A year ago, you received orders to follow the army on the Lakalā operation. The night before you left, in my bed…”

Lian Xu raised his hand to cover his mouth: “You know better than anyone why I was there.”

He Yu narrowed his eyes, his pupils, more beautiful than the aurora, flashing with a streak of light. The Alpha remained motionless, like a hungry wolf staring intently at its prey.

Suddenly, Lian Xu felt a burning sensation on his palm, as if something had quickly slipped past. He abruptly let go, only to see his palm was wet.

And the Alpha who had committed the mischief showed no remorse, using his tongue to prod the corner of his mouth with a half-smile.

Lian Xu glanced at him, then quickly looked away.

    “Don’t be with him anymore…”

He Yu suddenly blurted out this sentence.

Lian Xu abruptly clenched his sleeve, his heart pounding. The surroundings suddenly quieted. A gentle breeze brushed his cheek, quietly carrying away the tear that had lingered in the corner of his eye.

He sighed, slowly unclenched his sleeve, and walked straight past He Yu.

“Should I be with you instead?”
