    Chapter 17

The words stunned both of them.

He Yu stared at Fiya. A moment ago, he had been fierce and wolf-like, radiating danger and vigilance. Now, however, his attitude gradually softened in response to the girl’s innocent smile.

    He lowered his gun.

“You want him to be your mother? How?” He Yu was skilled at concealing his private thoughts, but at this moment, he made no effort to hide his personal desires.

Fiya didn’t look at him, but instead gazed at Lian Xu and asked, “Brother, are you coming back with me?”

Whether the only experimental base on the Barren Star was real or fake, it was necessary to investigate. As for Fiya’s request, Lian Xu reluctantly agreed.

Experimental bases mostly required lab coats, perhaps topped with a wig for appearances. Since Lian Xu was already slender among Omegas, this would compensate for the flaw of being too tall when disguised as a woman.

But he never expected that Fiya didn’t just want him to pretend to be an ordinary researcher.

The two flew their vessel to a desolate area, where nothing but yellow sand stretched out before them. A simple, dilapidated wooden house stood on the wasteland. Inside the house were boxes of various sizes and shapes.

Underneath the largest box was a hidden trapdoor.

While the two were debating how to descend, Fiya opened another box and pulled out two exquisite formal outfits: a white, trailing mermaid gown and a black tailcoat tuxedo.

To ensure the disguise was flawless, Fiya even found a long, wavy blonde wig, trimmed it to a suitable shape for Lian Xu, and handed it to him along with the dress.

Lian Xu stared at the gown in his hands, regretting agreeing to the proposal without asking for details first.

He Yu, however, smiled as he changed into the smart black tuxedo, wrapping an arm around Lian Xu’s slender waist. “Wife, aren’t you going to change? Time is almost up!”

    Fiya tactfully turned away.

“Brother, my mother is as tall as you, so you don’t have to worry about giving it away, as long as you don’t speak,” Fiya said. “Whenever they successfully develop a new medicine, the base director holds a ball to celebrate their research achievements. Only those internally invited can attend, so everyone briefly lowers their guard. If we don’t sneak in now, we might not get another chance.”

This ball was specifically to celebrate the successful development of the anti-zombie serum. If Lian Xu didn’t take it in time, he might lose his mind and become a walking corpse.

If he was lucky, he might be like the man they brought on the vessel, occasionally regaining lucidity.

Besides, Lian Xu felt that Fiya was hiding some secret. Since he was here, he decided to investigate thoroughly.

“Wife, what are you waiting for? Do you want me to help you put it on?”

He Yu wore black leather gloves, his fingertips teasing the buttons of Lian Xu’s military uniform.

Lian Xu expressionlessly slapped his hand away. “It’s just acting. Why the unnecessary calling?”

“You have to commit fully to the act, haven’t you heard?” He Yu’s lips curled up, already anticipating what Lian Xu would look like in the dress.

A short while later, under the Alpha’s intense gaze, Lian Xu slowly removed his military uniform piece by piece, then changed into the form-fitting, off-the-shoulder mermaid gown.

The Omega’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He truly couldn’t accept himself wearing a dress.

    “Can’t your mother be a man…”

A male mother is still a mother.

Fiya’s eyes lit up. This suggestion seemed good too.

“If Brother Lian Xu can’t accept wearing a dress, then just wear a formal suit like his,” Fiya said, rummaging through the bottom of the box and finding another black male tuxedo.

    He Yu twitched his mouth.

    Are you messing with me?

After Lian Xu changed back into the suit, Fiya moved the partition. “Let’s go down.”

The male suit was much more comfortable than the dress. Lian Xu, feeling relieved, followed the stairs down.

Fiya kept pace with him. After descending a few steps, she looked up at the Alpha above, shrugging helplessly. “Brother Lian Xu didn’t want to, so I couldn’t help you.”

    He Yu: “…”

The Alpha walked last, his face cold.

The staircase led to the research base entrance. Fiya used a retinal scan to successfully lead the two inside. Upon entering, they saw rows of neatly arranged test tubes. Human bodies were submerged in transparent solution inside the tubes to prevent decay.

“They are captives who invaded the Barren Star, used specifically for experiments,” Fiya explained. “A few years ago, a group of extraterrestrial invaders broke in, burning, killing, and looting. The base director rallied the people to subdue them. Experiments require fresh life, and they were the chosen lucky ones.”

    “Hmph—”

He Yu stepped forward, grabbing Lian Xu’s arm and pulling him behind him. A folding knife with a metal casing slipped into Lian Xu’s pocket. He raised his gun, pressed it against the back of Fiya’s head, and pulled the trigger, his voice low:

“How does a child like you know so much? Did you deliberately lure us in?”

Fiya sniffed, giving a soft “Mm.”

She admitted her motive without hesitation.

“My parents were also turned into experimental subjects. Those two are them.”

She pointed to two massive glass test tubes in front of them. The people inside were contorted and could no longer be called human structures. Long hair floated in the solution, and their faces were blurred, making it impossible to distinguish their gender.

“No one remembers who they were, only I know that they are the ones who gave birth to me and raised me.” Fiya’s emotions were stable, not the reaction expected of a normal human. “Soon they will become like the walking corpses who died on the wasteland, because the experiment failed.”

Lian Xu gripped He Yu’s wrist, moving the muzzle away from the back of Fiya’s head, his expression complex.

“Why are they conducting such inhumane experiments?”

Fiya looked back at Lian Xu, trying to read some clue from his expression. A minute later, she ran behind an operating table, crawled onto the floor, and reached into a gap to pull out a yellowed diary.

After retrieving the diary, she brushed off the dust, flipping through and reading the contents. Finding what she wanted, she excitedly ran over, stood on her tiptoes, and held up the diary for Lian Xu to see.

He Yu instinctively wrapped his arm around Lian Xu’s waist and pulled him into his embrace, taking the diary the girl handed over.

Lian Xu was pressed tightly against the Alpha’s chest. Pheromones overflowed, rapidly impacting the Omega’s posterior neck gland. He tensed his shoulders and quickly scanned the content, his pupils instantly widening.

The diary contained anatomical diagrams of human modification experiments.

Flipping further, there were dense, detailed operational procedures, along with failed cases and anticipated results.

“This is clearly about creating biological weapons!” Lian Xu said angrily.

He Yu was also puzzled. “With technology advancing so quickly, why would anyone research something so archaic?”

Fiya replied, “Mom said that once the experiment succeeds, the modified people will live like normal humans, mimicking human habits and local languages. Their brains are connected to machines, allowing for remote consciousness control, and everything that happens to that person can be decoded and transmitted back as data.”

“I don’t understand what my mother meant by data, but I think if this experiment succeeds, the harm to humanity will be great. Because Mom said that if someone truly develops this, then humans outside the Barren Star will be replaced. From the outside in, the Barren Star won’t be spared either. Not all the invaders were bad people, but they were turned into experimental subjects, and local people are also selected for experiments. My parents didn’t want to become bad people like them, so they were made into experimental subjects.”

Lian Xu stroked the top of Fiya’s head. “Don’t be afraid, it’s alright. We will destroy the base, and no one will research human modification anymore.”

Fiya didn’t understand why they were conducting the experiments, only that her parents had mentioned the danger of doing so.

And she had personally witnessed those people locking her parents in giant test tubes and pouring transparent liquid from the top. At first, they struggled and screamed, trying to climb out of the tubes, but the people outside watched coldly, some even applauding.

The screams grew fainter, and her parents’ arm movements slowed until they completely gave up resisting, enveloped by the solution from head to toe.

So she escaped the base, but the outside world was nothing like she imagined.

Lian Xu glanced at He Yu. Both knew clearly that if the experiment succeeded, these indistinguishable experimental subjects would pose a great danger to humanity. If these people were taught combat, trained to operate Mechs, and passed assessments to enter military bases… the consequences would be unimaginable.

The mastermind, far away on the Barren Star, could dismantle a planetary system using only a physical body and a controlled brain.

“That’s just your side of the story. Why should we believe you?”

Fiya blinked and pulled a badge from her small satchel.

“How do you have this?!” Lian Xu asked.

This badge was the Chest Insignia worn by officers of the Imperial Planet, symbolizing their status. Judging by the material, it appeared to be an old item from over a decade ago.

Fiya handed the item to Lian Xu and said, “They were the first batch of experimental subjects. The uncle who gave me the badge said he was from the Imperial Planet, here to survey the terrain. Over a hundred people who came with the uncle are all soaking in test tubes.”

    “Where is he?”

“He’s gone,” Fiya said. “The uncle took me and escaped the base, hiding in the abandoned house above. But it wasn’t long before they found us. He hid me in a box, and he…”

“He also gave me this.” Fiya pulled out an Optic Computer manufactured by the Imperial Planet from her bag.

Based on this, He Yu dismissed the idea that Fiya was an operative. Those sent here for missions were highly trained officers who would never easily hand over something as important as an Optic Computer to an outsider.

In case of danger, the Optic Computer must be immediately destroyed.

He took the Optic Computer and examined it carefully, his peripheral vision watching the composed Fiya. Even if she was an operative, it didn’t matter; he was confident he could eliminate any obstacles here.

Lian Xu snatched the Optic Computer and casually put it in his pocket.

    “We’ll look at it later.”

He Yu paused for a moment, rubbing Lian Xu’s waist and smiling. “Why snatch it? It’s not like I wouldn’t give it to you, wife.”

Lian Xu gave him a faint look. “That’s enough. No need to act.”

    “Why?” He Yu asked sincerely.

Lian Xu sighed, unsure if he was feigning ignorance or genuinely confused.

“Fiya’s parents are already… so there’s no need to act.”

He Yu licked his lips, inhaling the faint pheromones from the Omega’s posterior neck, his voice languid. “Wife…”

Lian Xu clenched his fist. “I said no need…”

“Fiya, what are you doing there?!”

A man in a white lab coat and gold-rimmed glasses suddenly appeared. He looked young but his hair was already gray. He stood by a test tube not far away, his eyes fixed on Fiya.

Fiya turned back, made a shushing gesture, and then told the white-haired man, “I went out with Mom and Dad, and we just got back.”

    He Yu: “…”

    Lian Xu: “?”

Weren’t Fiya’s parents already made into experimental subjects?!

But the white-haired man showed no suspicion, greeting the two with a smile. “Is that so? Doctor, you must be tired!”
