    Chapter 15

    Boom, boom—

A silver light descended from the sky. The aircraft hovered overhead, and rapid-fire rounds shot out mercilessly from its underside, sweeping across the horde of corpses.

Lian Xu narrowed his eyes. The aircraft suspended in the air was silver, with a dazzling deep red tail fin. It was clearly the same model as the one he had been piloting.

The rapid-fire rounds rained down, quickly punching large holes through the bodies of the walking corpses.

“Get down!” Lian Xu shouted, pressing the little girl to the ground. Worried that the rounds might hit her, he shifted his body to shield her.

After several loud explosions, the corpse horde was completely wiped out. A large number of rotting corpses lay on the ground, the bloody, putrid smell stinging Lian Xu’s nostrils.

He Yu jumped out of the aircraft and sprinted down the slope.

Lian Xu had just helped the little girl stand up, but before he could steady himself, He Yu slammed him back down onto the ground. “Are you fucking insane?!”

“Cough, cough…” Lian Xu tried to catch his breath but was pressed firmly to the ground. He choked immediately. He tried to push away the Alpha pinning him down, but he had no strength left.

Raindrops pelted his face, making it hard to open his eyes. He parted his lips slightly, intending to tell He Yu to get up, but the Alpha fiercely sealed his mouth.

“Mmm…” Lian Xu struggled, his military boots scraping wildly against the ground, coating everything in mud. “He Yu, get up… mmm…”

He Yu bit his lower lip hard, finally pulling back after a long moment. “Dueling with a bunch of walking corpses, you don’t care about your life, do you?! Where is your gun? What happened to your injuries?!”

“Why did you cut off communication? Do you really not want to see me?!”

After a long, deep kiss, Lian Xu finally managed to breathe. He spoke in a tiny voice, “I ran out of bullets… I ran into a situation where I couldn’t talk.”

He Yu’s shoulders shook at the words. He frantically picked up the Omega, carefully avoiding the wounds on his shoulder and arm, and kissed the corner of his mouth, utterly distraught.

    “I’m sorry I was late.”

Lian Xu turned his face away. He really didn’t want to admit that without He Yu, he might have truly died here. But this wasn’t a good place, and he hadn’t wanted the other man to come.

“Get on the aircraft first. Let’s treat those wounds.”

Lian Xu gave a faint hum of assent.

    “Dar—ling—”

Just as the two were about to leave with the little girl, a walking corpse suddenly stood up and stumbled toward the pile of bodies. The corpse that had initially warned Lian Xu to run had been thrown behind a tree and thus spared. Now, it was kneeling in the pile of corpses, holding a body riddled with holes with one hand, tears streaming down its face.

    “I’m—sor—ry—”

Lian Xu looked at the walking corpse, suddenly touched. He raised his hand and pressed down on He Yu’s gun.

    “Take him with us.”

He Yu turned to look at him. “What time is it, and you’re still worrying about a corpse?”

Lian Xu didn’t speak. He shook off He Yu’s supporting hand and strode toward the man, who hadn’t fully turned into a corpse and could still barely be considered human.

“Come with me. I promised to take you home.”

Hearing the word ‘home,’ the man suddenly burst into loud sobs.

“I want to take him home—home—” His speech sounded more fluent than before, as if his language system was slowly recovering.

Lian Xu tried to communicate with him. “He can’t walk anymore, but I think he would really want you to leave this place.”

The man cried even harder. “I—don’t want to go. I want to stay with him.”

    “He is…”

Before Lian Xu could finish, the man spoke. “My lover. We promised to go home together.”

A clear and fluent sentence. The man had clearly recovered his human consciousness. Lian Xu was astonished at how quickly he had recovered. What was the reason these people had turned into walking dead? And what kind of opportunity allowed those who hadn’t completely lost consciousness to recover?

“Why are you wasting time talking to him?” He Yu walked over, delivered a swift chop to the man’s neck, knocking him unconscious, and then wrapped a clean cloth around his ankle before dragging him toward the aircraft.

The hatch remained open. He wouldn’t allow the rotting man to board the aircraft, but he didn’t stop Lian Xu from watching him either.

The aircraft was equipped with specialized medical supplies. He Yu first disinfected the wounds. The antiseptic stung the injuries like a branding iron. Lian Xu gritted his teeth and endured the pain, fine beads of sweat breaking out on his forehead.

The rain-soaked military uniform clung tightly to Lian Xu’s body. The night temperature was so low it made him shiver. He Yu held him and glanced back at the little girl sitting in the co-pilot seat.

“You need to rest properly. I’ll take her to my aircraft.”

Lian Xu shook his head. “No, it’s too dangerous.”

He Yu roughly rubbed the Omega’s face. “That’s still safer than an aircraft with an open hatch! She can stay there. The hard shell is enough to protect her from attack, and you won’t be distracted.”

Saying this, the Alpha suddenly lowered his head and rubbed his nose against Lian Xu’s ear. “Your clothes are soaked. I need to change you. We can’t have her watching, can we? Besides… I missed you.”

He Yu kissed the scent gland on the back of Lian Xu’s neck, releasing his pheromones to envelop the Omega.

Lian Xu already had no resistance to his pheromones, and now, being injured, he was in the greatest need of comfort. After receiving just a little bit of the pheromones, he was drowning in them, unable to pull himself out.

“Be good, let her go over.” He Yu’s nimble fingers unbuttoned Lian Xu’s uniform, revealing his pale collarbone. His warm palm pressed against the skin, gently rubbing. “Or is Commander Lian actually very happy to let others watch you like this?”

Heat drilled into his ear. Lian Xu shivered, feeling damp below the waist. His voice was muffled when he spoke. “Mmm…”

He Yu rubbed his ear. “So obedient.”

Then, he released Lian Xu, took off his military jacket, and draped it over the Omega. He opened the right-side hatch.

A cold voice rang out above the girl’s head. “Come with me.”

The little girl looked at Lian Xu, seeing him huddled tightly, wrapped in the jacket. She then turned to the tall Alpha and couldn’t help but ask, “Will big brother be in danger?”

She had personally witnessed the terrifying wounds the walking corpses had inflicted on Lian Xu. The rainwater on the Barren Star wasn’t clean and could cause infection, so she was worried.

He Yu said expressionlessly, “He’s fine.”

The moment He Yu saw the little girl, he guessed the reason Lian Xu had acted recklessly, disregarding his own safety. He was so angry he wanted to tie the man up, stuff him into the aircraft, and take him back—lock him up, whatever it took, as long as he didn’t leave his sight.

But seeing the wounds on his shoulder and arm, he forced himself to swallow the words he wanted to yell.

Lian Xu came here with a mission and wouldn’t return until it was complete. Seeing a defenseless little girl in danger, he certainly wouldn’t ignore her.

But he was far too overconfident.

Seeing He Yu’s expression darken, the little girl obediently jumped off the aircraft and followed him onto the other one.

“No matter what happens outside, you are not allowed to come out,” He Yu commanded.

The little girl nodded. She knew this place was fraught with danger and she shouldn’t cause trouble for the two big brothers.

He Yu was about to close the hatch when the little girl spoke again. “Are you big brother’s lover?”

“Hmm?” He Yu raised an eyebrow, unconsciously curving his lips. His grim expression instantly softened. “Why do you say that?”

Was it just because he had kissed Lian Xu in front of her?

But kissing wasn’t only for people who were in love.

“You worry about big brother a lot, and big brother cares about you too.”

He Yu was stunned. That was an answer he hadn’t expected.

He raised his hand and stroked the top of the little girl’s head, joking, “Yes, I love big brother, I love him to death! But big brother doesn’t like me. He’s very mean, isn’t he?”

Hearing this, the little girl shook her head in disagreement. “You only pretend to be strong in front of the person you like because you don’t want them to worry.”

    He Yu narrowed his eyes.

That guy, Lian Xu, was ridiculously proud. Which competition didn’t he treat him like an enemy, beating him half to death? He knew he couldn’t win against him but insisted on fighting, preferring to return covered in injuries rather than concede. If he just acted a little spoiled, letting him win wouldn’t be impossible, but he insisted on suffering for the sake of his pride.

How long had this child known him? How could she know what kind of person Lian Xu was? The child’s mind was too simple.

“Don’t ask any more questions. Go to sleep!” He Yu’s expression changed slightly, and he forcefully closed the hatch.

The rain outside gradually stopped, and the temperature plummeted. The aircraft cabin had a heating system, but given the current situation, if the hatch remained open, they would both be frozen solid before midnight.

He Yu stood outside and opened his Optic Computer to show Lian Xu the current temperature. “The temperature will drop further. If we don’t close the hatch, we’ll both freeze to death.”

Lian Xu lifted his eyelids, looked at the temperature trend for the next few hours, frowned, and rolled over, turning his back to the person outside. “We have to watch him.”

“Heh…” He Yu was so angry he laughed. “You’d rather freeze me to death for the sake of this random man, is that it?”

It was true that it wasn’t strictly necessary, but Lian Xu believed this person was crucial. He turned back to face He Yu and said in a negotiating tone, “Put him in the back.”

He Yu glanced at the man lying on the ground. He thought about something and smiled meaningfully.

    “Fine, I’ll listen to you.”

He dragged the man to the back. The cramped space didn’t allow him to stretch out, but there was no choice. Space was limited, so he had to fold the man’s legs up so he could curl up there.

After dealing with the man, He Yu closed the hatch, turned on the constant temperature system, and continued to hold Lian Xu.

Lian Xu pushed his shoulder, annoyed. “I’m not dead. You don’t need to hold me.”

“How can I not? It’s been so long since I’ve seen you. Let me smell your pheromones.”

Lian Xu tilted his head, avoiding him.

It had only been half a day, at most.

He Yu rested his chin on the top of Lian Xu’s head, holding his cold hands and rubbing them gently for warmth. Thinking of the little girl, he smiled. “That kid is quite cute.”

Lian Xu furrowed his brow, unsure what he was trying to convey, so he said, “If you like her, take her back and adopt her as a goddaughter.”

He added, “If her parents agree, that is.”

“In this situation, do you think her parents are still alive?”

Most likely, something had happened, otherwise, why would the little girl be left alone in the wilderness?

He Yu had applied a strong inhibitor patch and injected himself with a suppressant before coming, which should have lasted three or four days. But for some reason, as soon as he encountered Lian Xu, the cedarwood pheromones were drawn out by the white camellia, completely uncontrollable.

He rubbed the tip of Lian Xu’s ear and quietly asked, “Do you like children?”

Lian Xu felt like laughing. “If I say yes, are you going to call me Daddy?”

He Yu smiled. He was dreaming big.

    “I like them,” he said.

“Oh, well, that’s perfect. You should adopt the little girl. If her parents are gone, she won’t be able to live well in a place like this on her own. Taking her back would be charity, and she could even take care of you when she grows up.”

“Why don’t you adopt her?” He Yu asked him.

Lian Xu thought for a moment and replied, “I didn’t say I liked children. But if you insist on calling me Daddy, I suppose I can accept it.”

He Yu scoffed softly, rubbing Lian Xu’s fingers repeatedly, intentionally applying more pressure at the knuckles, as if playing with some hard-won treasure. Once they were hot and flushed, he gave them a hard squeeze. “Always trying to take advantage of me… Why don’t you suggest having one with me?”
