Chapter 9 Fishing for a Wife
After Guān Suī returned to the country, he took over the affairs of the family company, dealing with projects and meetings daily.
The youthful arrogance and sharp edge he once possessed had been tempered by work into steady composure and restraint. Dressed in a suit, he concealed the Alpha’s inherent Wildness, his every move exuding maturity and refinement.
If Wēn Sòng were to see him, she would surely utter one phrase: “A beast in human clothing.”
After the meeting, he returned to his office.
Guān Suī undid the top button of his shirt with one hand, then used his index and middle fingers to pull at the tie restricting his neck, adding a hint of wild defiance to his maturity.
He pulled out his office chair and leaned back loosely.
Tilting his head back, he closed his eyes.
He pressed his brow to relieve the exhaustion accumulated from over ten hours of high-efficiency work during his Rut Period.
Assistant Jin, who had followed him in, stood nearby, poured him a glass of water, and placed it within reach before continuing to report on work matters.
“Zhengrong Group is currently developing new land and has initiated a cooperation invitation. Chairman Guān’s intention is…”
Guān Suī opened his eyes and raised a hand to stop him.
“You can handle those matters according to Chairman Guān’s wishes. I’ve already reviewed the cooperation contract with Zhengrong.”
“Is there anything else?”
“If not, you may go and attend to your duties.”
Assistant Jin closed the documents in his hand and stood respectfully to the side.
“The work project reports are finished, but on a private matter—”
He paused for a second, lifting his eyes to glance at Guān Suī, who was sitting at the desk drinking water.
Guān Suī took a sip of water to soothe his dry throat, his expression unperturbed, not interrupting Assistant Jin. Seeing this, the assistant understood and continued, “Chairman Guān has arranged a blind date for you. It’s with the Wēn family’s Young Master Wēn Xǔ.”
Hearing this, Guān Suī placed the water glass back in its original position.
Assistant Jin observed the subtle changes in his expression but detected no resistance. He said, “Young Master Wēn Xǔ will be attending an auction three days from now. Young Master Wēn Sòng will be accompanying him.”
Guān Suī, however, asked, “Do I have the right to choose who my blind date is?”
Assistant Jin maintained his composure: “Mr. Guān, of course you have the right to choose.”
Guān Suī didn’t want to make things difficult for Assistant Jin, who was merely relaying a message. “I will personally speak to my father about private matters. Your task is complete. You may now go and attend to what you need to do.”
Assistant Jin nodded slightly. “Understood, Mr. Guān.”
After the man left, Guān Suī tapped the desk lightly with his bent knuckles.
“Beep beep—”
The phone on the desk rang. He picked it up and saw the contact name “Duàn Zé.”
He swiped to answer, put it on speakerphone, and tossed it back onto the desk.
“A-Suī, what are you doing?” Duàn Zé yelled into the phone.
Guān Suī continued pressing his brow. “At the company.”
Duàn Zé whistled, sounding gleeful. “You’ve been running wild overseas for so many years; it’s time to come back and enjoy the pain of work. Your old man spent years building this empire, and now he’s counting on you to take over everything.”
Guān Suī was Guān Míng’s only child, a Top-Tier Alpha, and the recipient of the family’s highest expectations.
Since childhood, he had been required to master more skills than his peers. Everything necessary for self-cultivation, social etiquette in high society, and recreational activities needed to be perfected. The four arts (qin, qi, shu, hua), riding, and martial arts were basic requirements. He had to learn several foreign languages and was expected to thoroughly study how to manage the family from a young age, leaving him virtually no personal leisure time.
Guān Suī was never a mature or steady personality. As he grew older, the rebellious streak of adolescence grew wildly.
He would study diligently during the day, then climb over the wall at night to leave the Guān family and meet friends for drag racing.
From balancing the two to being discovered and scolded by the family, Guān Suī simply threw in the towel. He stopped suppressing his Alpha nature and stopped obeying the family’s arrangements, choosing instead to study and play with normal peers his age, venting his love for freedom.
Later, Guān Suī was sent abroad for training.
“Hmph,” Guān Suī really wanted a cigarette to ease his inner frustration. “He even wants to arrange my marriage.”
The “he” referred to Chairman Guān, his father.
Duàn Zé gasped. “His need for control is truly strong. Your old man’s personality is just that rigid and authoritative. But if you don’t agree, how can he force you? You’re behaving now because you’re worried about making him angry enough to land in the hospital.”
“Besides, you have your aunt; she always follows your wishes.”
“If all else fails, there’s your grandfather. You’re his favorite among all his grandchildren.”
Guān Suī knew Guān Míng’s arrangements posed no real threat to him, but then he thought of Wēn Sòng also attending the auction.
“I know.”
“Did you get the results for the matter I asked you to investigate last time?”
Duàn Zé finally spoke. “I called precisely to tell you that the team specializing in Pheromone Cancer Cells research responded. They said that if it hasn’t worsened, surgery can be performed within three months. The specific situation requires an examination of the patient before a conclusion can be drawn.”
Guān Suī pondered for a moment. “Good.”
“Send me the contact information for the team.”
“I’ll arrange the examination with them.”
Although Wēn Sòng said she was still in the thinking stage, the illness wouldn’t wait. It was best to understand the situation in advance so that once she decided, the surgery could proceed immediately.
Since there was a method, he couldn’t just “threaten” without action.
After all, he needed to show some sincerity for Wēn Sòng to trust him.
Duàn Zé asked curiously, “A-Suī, why are you suddenly so concerned about this illness? I remember Pheromone Cancer Cells only account for 2% of the national population, and the probability of mutation is extremely low. Among all the people I know, it seems only Wēn Sòng’s maternal grandmother—”
As he spoke, he seemed to realize some huge secret.
But the logic was too convoluted, and for a moment, he couldn’t figure out Guān Suī’s motivation.
Could it be that Zhào Míngzhuó asked Guān Suī to help investigate?
The next second, he heard Guān Suī say, “Don’t tell Zhào Míngzhuó about this.”
Duàn Zé: “?”
Investigating the illness related to Zhào Míngzhuó’s boyfriend’s grandmother, contacting the research team, yet choosing not to inform the person concerned.
What was the intention?
Duàn Zé’s mind couldn’t quite keep up with Guān Suī’s actions.
“Alright,” he naturally agreed.
Despite their close relationship, there were small cliques within their group.
Duàn Zé, Guān Suī, and Fù Jǐngchuān, who was in another city, had the strongest bond.
If Guān Suī told him not to mention it to Zhào Míngzhuó, he wouldn’t reveal a single word.
If the other party didn’t state the reason, Duàn Zé wouldn’t press further.
“There’s an auction three days from now,” Guān Suī said. “You’re coming with me.”
Before Duàn Zé could ask a couple of questions, he heard the other party add, “Wēn Xǔ will be there too.”
“Oh, the old man is having me go on a blind date with him.”
Duàn Zé: “?”
“Guān Suī! I’m telling you, you absolutely cannot agree.”
“There are so many Omegas in Suicheng. You can like anyone, but it absolutely cannot be Wēn Xǔ.”
“Do you know that? Do you understand?”
“The fate of our friendship depends on your attitude this time, considering how many years I’ve taken the fall for you.”
Guān Suī let out a short, light laugh. “If I really intended to like him, would I bother asking you to come along?”
Duàn Zé on the other end of the phone finally breathed a sigh of relief and quickly agreed. “Good, good, good. I’ll go with you in three days.”
“Also, one more thing—”
“What did you use that special certificate for unstable Alpha Pheromones for, the one you had me forge early in the morning last time?”
Guān Suī curled his lips and uttered a few words:
“Fishing for a wife.”
