The weather was poor today. A heavy downpour started before Chu Yu left the house. She put on a thin black trench coat and pulled out a massive black umbrella, looking as if she were attending a funeral.
Li Heru, however, was excited. The doors and windows were wide open, and the wind carried cold rainwater inside. She leaned back in the hanging chair on the balcony, one leg dangling and swinging, looking extremely content.
“Don’t let the wind blow in too much, the wooden floor can’t handle being soaked.” Chu Yu originally intended to remind her not to catch a cold, but then changed her mind.
Ghosts don’t catch colds; ghosts love gloomy, rainy days.
Li Heru pretended not to hear. Chu Yu sighed and locked the door as she left.
The scheduled audition time was 2:00 PM. At 1:30 PM, the taxi stopped outside Pingjiang Road No. 34.
Chu Yu stepped out and looked up. It was a small building constructed of brick and stone, with iron doors and windows that were already showing signs of red rust. Ivy ominously covered half the building. Behind a broken window on the second floor, she saw a pair of dangling feet.
A moment later, those feet jumped down. A girl in a flowing white dress, her hair in pigtails, leaned against the window, stretching her neck to an unnatural length to observe the people below the old house.
When her gaze swept over Chu Yu, a black umbrella blocked her view.
Chu Yu opened her umbrella, stepped over a puddle, and walked inside.
It truly lived up to its reputation as a haunted house. Because of her Yin-Yang Eyes, as soon as she approached, Chu Yu felt surrounded by lingering ghosts. The producer was standing in the center giving a speech, surrounded by a circle of actors waiting to audition.
Chu Yu arrived relatively early, but she was still pushed to the outer circle.
She found a corner to sit in. The advantage was that she had a full view of the situation; the disadvantage was also that.
In the five minutes she had been here, she had already seen several strangely dressed, blood-stained girls hopping around in the corridor.
The closest one was right behind her.
Chu Yu subtly tilted her head and saw clearly: it was the pigtail girl who had been hanging from the second floor earlier. Her neck was covered in purple marks, and she was smiling as she leaned down to listen to two people talking in front of her.
“Damn it, what kind of riff-raff is showing up? We’re a low-budget film, but that doesn’t mean anyone can just come and audition.” The voice was rough. A woman exhaled smoke, and Chu Yu, sitting in front, got a direct whiff.
She frowned slightly and fanned the air with her hand.
This action displeased the woman. She grabbed the back of Chu Yu’s chair. “What are you fanning? Never seen someone smoke?”
Chu Yu was caught off guard, and she and the chair nearly tumbled to the ground. The people around them looked over.
“I’ve never seen anyone smoke indoors in a public place. Where are your manners? Then again, it fits my stereotype of petty people who curse behind others’ backs.” Chu Yu sneered, noticing that the woman was wearing a staff badge.
People like this were common—they thought they could boss around unknown actors just because they were staff. Chu Yu had seen plenty.
The pigtail girl’s mouth curved into a smile, and she stretched her neck inquisitively toward Chu Yu. The eyes of the human and the ghost met. Chu Yu looked away and smoothed her clothes.
The woman gritted her teeth, her face flushed crimson. She snatched the folder of materials from Chu Yu’s hand, glanced at it, and threw it back. “Chu Yu, is it? Don’t think you’re a vigilante just because you’re talking tough here. You just wait.”
Chu Yu’s expression was indifferent. She ignored the woman and sat back down.
The woman stood up and walked away, muttering curses as she went.
The girl next to Chu Yu tugged at her sleeve. “That’s the Casting Director. I heard she’s very petty. You’ve offended her, so be careful during your audition later.”
Chu Yu looked at her in surprise and said, “Okay.”
The girl was probably a chatterbox. She pulled her chair closer and leaned in. “This production crew is crazy. They arranged the audition room on the second floor, in that haunted room. We have to audition through a monitor. They say it’s to test the actors’ psychological resilience. What should I do? I’m terrified of ghosts.”
Chu Yu felt her temples throb. Afraid of ghosts? Then why audition for a horror movie? Asking for trouble.
Perhaps sensing Chu Yu’s confusion, the girl added, “Don’t look at me like that. I have no choice. Someone in my family is sick, and I urgently need money. I can’t find a job, and my education isn’t great. I heard this crew was casting widely and the pay was decent, so I came to try my luck.”
Chu Yu fell silent for a moment. Few people in this industry came from good backgrounds. It was tough, exhausting, unstable, and they had to endure harassment from staff. It wasn’t easy.
“Come and get your number tags! Prepare for the audition!” a staff member shouted.
Chu Yu received number 45. The girl was ahead of her, clutching number 44 with a tearful expression.
“I’m doomed. Getting number 44 in a haunted house is too unlucky.” She clenched her fists, cold sweat dripping down her neck.
“I feel so heavy. What should I do? Am I too nervous?” the girl turned to Chu Yu.
A headless boy was sitting on her shoulder. Blood flowed down the boy’s calves onto her shoulder.
Chu Yu patted her shoulder. The headless boy, startled, leaped off.
“It’s fine. I’ll switch with you.” Chu Yu took her number 44 and handed her own tag to her.
“Really? Sister, you’re too kind! My name is Chengzi. What’s yours? I feel so much better now that we’ve switched numbers.” Chengzi was moved to tears.
Chengzi’s luck wasn’t great either. They were both struggling, but she didn’t have Chu Yu’s courage. If she went in now, she might be scared to death.
For safety, Chu Yu decided to go in first, clear the room, and then let Chengzi enter.
The line was long. When it was Chu Yu’s turn, she was about to step inside.
“Hey, you, switch with the one behind you.” The Casting Director walked over, snatched the tag from Chu Yu’s hand without explanation, and pulled Chengzi from behind Chu Yu.
“You go first,” she shoved Chengzi.
This sudden change startled both of them. Chu Yu frowned. “Why?”
“No reason. The order of entry doesn’t affect your performance, does it? Don’t hold up the people behind you.” The Casting Director gave a fake smile, then returned to her cold expression and pushed Chengzi inside.
The door slammed shut. Chu Yu’s face turned cold. Unsure what scheme they were plotting, she crossed her arms and leaned against the wall to wait.
It didn’t matter. She would meet force with force.
During this time, several staff members huddled around the Casting Director, whispering. They brought in several boxes and stacked them near the door, preparing.
The tension in the air grew heavier. The people behind them craned their necks, waiting for the show.
The door was pushed open with a whoosh, and Chengzi emerged.
She looked relatively composed. She walked over to Chu Yu and whispered, “It’s okay, it’s not too scary. Good luck.”
If Chengzi said it wasn’t scary, then it must be fine. Chu Yu was about to enter, but the Casting Director put out a hand to block her. “Excuse me, they need to tidy up the set.”
She gave a malicious smile, then signaled for a few people to carry the boxes inside.
“They didn’t tidy up the set for the people before me…” Chengzi mumbled.
Chu Yu vaguely guessed what she was up to. She calmly watched them busy themselves, finding it amusing.
Trying to mess with her? They picked the right person. The penniless fear no one, and she, the King of Misfortune Incarnate, was certainly not afraid.
When the staff came out, they gestured for her to enter. Chu Yu opened the dark, cavernous door and smiled back at the Casting Director.
The door closed. The room was large, with the lights off and the curtains drawn. She cautiously moved forward in the darkness, occasionally stepping on something wet, sticky, and soft underfoot.
She stepped on them callously, one under each foot.
Wailing sounds came from her ears, accompanied by scattered severed limbs on the floor. If this were Chengzi, she would have already been scared to death and collapsed.
Unfortunately, it was Chu Yu. She walked to the window, fumbled for the light cord in the dark, and pulled it. A bucket of unknown liquid splashed down from above. Chu Yu leaped aside, the smell of blood filling her nose. A few drops of blood splattered on her face, and she wiped them away.
When the light came on, the room looked like a mass grave. Various pieces of shredded flesh and broken limbs were scattered about, and several mummy-like props sat on the sofa, staring straight at her.
Chu Yu picked up the paper on the table. It contained her audition content.
[Roleplay a teenager who mistakenly enters a haunted house, discovers one of their companions hanging outside the window, and attempts a rescue.]
As soon as she put the paper down, Chu Yu transformed. Her legs shook like sieves. She shuffled forward, step by step, slowly reaching the window before letting out a scream.
The scream was initially devoid of genuine emotion, but Chu Yu couldn’t help but inject a few personal feelings into it.
The wind rustled the tattered curtains. Two figures were suspended from the ceiling.
Both wore white clothes and white shoes, their attire ragged and stained with blood. Their upper bodies were hidden in the drapery. Chu Yu’s outstretched hand froze in place.
According to the script, she was supposed to figure out a way to save one of them. But which one? Wasn’t there only one companion?
Staring at the white clothes, in a flash of insight, Chu Yu remembered the pigtail girl she had seen hanging on the second floor when she arrived.
One of these was a ghost, and the monitor wouldn’t show it.
Cold sweat broke out on Chu Yu’s back. If she mistakenly embraced the ghost, how would she explain this bizarre behavior to the staff watching her in the monitoring room?
She didn’t want to expose her Yin-Yang Eyes yet.
Chu Yu studied the scene, staring at the person on the right for a long time. The wind blew the curtain open, revealing a sliver of light. She saw clearly: a thin wire was attached to the right figure. The end of the wire was connected to a large box of prop swords placed precariously on a wall shelf.
The box was on the verge of falling. The moment she reached out, the swords would rain down on her.
Chu Yu felt a chill run down her spine. Chengzi had entered and left safely. This trap was clearly set up afterward. Did she even need to guess who arranged it?
She took a breath, feeling annoyed.
If she hadn’t had her Yin-Yang Eyes, and her judgment had been swayed by the ghost hanging there, she might have been carried out of here today.
A few minutes later, Chu Yu kicked the door open. Ignoring the uproar outside, she dragged a large pile of severed limbs and shredded flesh out with her.
The Casting Director’s expression froze. She immediately cursed, “Are you crazy? Why are you dragging the props out?”
Chu Yu didn’t look at her. Her gaze pierced through the crowd toward Chengzi. “Were these things here when you went in?”
Chengzi was confused. She looked around and whispered nervously, “No.”
“Then why was the floor covered in props when I went in? Is this your gift to me? Because I stopped you from smoking in public? Or because I talked back when you insulted me, and you held a grudge?” Chu Yu said coldly, looking at the Casting Director.
The Casting Director’s face turned beet red, but her volume didn’t drop. “Everyone has a different audition scenario! What’s the problem with me asking the prop master to rearrange the set?”
The commotion here was intense. The door to the monitoring room opened, and a short-haired woman walked out. She had a round, slightly plump face, looked amiable, but had a strong presence.
Chu Yu didn’t retort. The woman walked straight toward her and smiled. “What’s going on here?” The Casting Director looked embarrassed. “Director Zheng, why did we disturb you? It’s nothing. This newcomer is ignorant and insists that our prop master was trying to make things difficult for her. I was just…”
Director Zheng raised her hand. “I want to hear what she has to say.”
All eyes in the room focused on Chu Yu. She remained calm and recounted the entire incident, from beginning to end.
The Casting Director’s eyes widened as if they might pop out, but she couldn’t stop Chu Yu from speaking. Afterward, Chu Yu gestured to Director Zheng. “As for why I’m so angry, the reason is inside.”
Several people entered the room. A few who had finished their auditions also slipped in to watch. When they saw the interior, they were stunned, standing rooted to the spot, afraid to enter.
Chu Yu glanced at the window. The pigtail ghost had disappeared, leaving only the dummy hanging there.
Chu Yu first pulled back the curtain to reveal the thin wire. Then she used a stick to gently nudge the dummy. The dummy tilted, and the box of swords crashed to the floor. Several sharpened long swords plunged into the wooden floor, kicking up a cloud of dust. Director Zheng’s face grew darker and darker.
The crowd gasped. Chu Yu said in a low voice, “When the swords fell, they would have severed the wire. So even if I was injured, they could claim they simply left the box there, and it was my bad luck that I accidentally knocked it down.”
The Casting Director was speechless. Everyone exchanged glances. Chu Yu scoffed and raised her chin toward Director Zheng. “I’m a small-time actor, insignificant. I know bullying nobodies is a tradition in production crews, but I still hope these malicious incidents can be reduced. After all, everyone is struggling.”
After speaking, Chu Yu turned to leave. The audition hadn’t finished, and all this trouble had erupted. She no longer held any hope of joining the crew. All she wanted now was to go back and thoroughly wash off the fake blood.
“What is your name?” Director Zheng called out from behind her. Chu Yu slightly turned her head, thinking, *I’m doomed.* Normally, publicly exposing someone’s misconduct never ended well.
But she still replied, “Chu Yu.”
Director Zheng nodded. “Go back and wait for my email.”
She looked at the Casting Director. “You. Pack your things and get out.”
