    Chapter 14: Top Donor

Shen Beidao twisted open the juice bottle cap and handed it to Lin Yi. “Yes, you guessed it.”

He leaned in slightly, close to Lin Yi’s ear. “Just now, seeing you go in alone with that elite man for so long, I felt a little disappointed.”

“…That was just a normal onboarding process.”

Lin Yi was a little unsure how to explain this sudden “accusation.” The churning jealousy he felt earlier was largely dissipated, and he didn’t know where to start with the questions he had planned.

“Does a regular employee’s onboarding require a director-level executive to personally receive them and talk alone for so long?” Shen Beidao raised an eyebrow, his tone slightly probing. “It sounds like he values you highly.”

Lin Yi felt awkward admitting that the company belonged to his father. He had just presented himself to Shen Beidao as someone who got the job based on merit; revealing his connections now would be embarrassing.

He stammered, then, recalling the earlier scene, said, “I also saw you chatting so intently with that receptionist lady! What were you talking about?” His tone was righteous.

The smile in Shen Beidao’s eyes deepened. Instead of answering, he asked, “Are you jealous?”

“Of course not.” Lin Yi instinctively turned his face away, his ears slightly flushed. But then he remembered that he was the legitimate “main squeeze,” and he announced with a touch of possessiveness, “Yes, I am jealous, so what? You’re my boyfriend. I wasn’t flirting with anyone else. Can’t I be jealous?”

    “Understood.”

“You… just ‘understood’?” Lin Yi was slightly bristling.

Shen Beidao looked at his stubborn yet adorable expression, his heart melting completely. He smiled and gently pulled Lin Yi into his embrace, simultaneously handing him his phone, screen unlocked. “Look through it however you like.”

Lin Yi didn’t hesitate, taking the phone and opening WeChat.

He found the very first chat record, which contained only two short messages:

[Student, our company is recruiting live stream hosts for product sales! Your image and demeanor are excellent. If you’re interested, you can submit your resume here ~]

    [Resume Link. Boss Zhipin]

Shen Beidao’s reply was concise and clear: [OK, thank you]

“Live stream host? You?” Lin Yi looked up at Shen Beidao, somewhat incredulously.

“Yes.” Shen Beidao explained seriously, “Your company’s HR said my image was good and I could try it. I thought it was an opportunity, so I couldn’t just refuse.”

He spoke with a thoughtful expression, as if genuinely considering the career development of this profession.

    “Live streaming, huh…”

Lin Yi scratched his head, deep in thought.

Images from the gossip he had read on forums flashed through his mind: many handsome male hosts easily catch the eye of some “Top Donor” or “Rich Female Donor,” and then…

    No way!

If Shen Beidao really starts live streaming, then I…

I must become the strongest “Top Donor”!

Fortunately, he had saved up some pocket money, plus the living allowance Xie Chun gave him.

Shen Beidao watched his little rabbit’s eyes change unpredictably—frowning one moment, secretly clenching his fist the next—completely unaware that the other party was already planning a “path of protection” for his live streaming career.

Shen Beidao asked, “What’s wrong? You don’t like me doing this? I’ll refuse later then.”

“No, I don’t dislike it!” Lin Yi quickly waved his hands. “It’s an opportunity. Don’t rush to refuse. What if you need it later…”

In his haste, his finger accidentally slid out of the chat interface, and he glimpsed the dense list of group messages in Shen Beidao’s WeChat, many marked with a red @ notification.

“Are you usually this busy?” Lin Yi didn’t click in for a closer look out of politeness.

Shen Beidao’s gaze swept across the phone screen.

Shoot, those are all messages from students tagging me. These kids ask the teacher about everything, no matter how small. Looks like I need to leave a few groups…

But Shen Beidao maintained a calm expression. “I hold a position in the Student Union, and I’m responsible for organizing some activities, so sometimes I get a lot of messages.”

“Oh, I see.” Lin Yi handed the phone back. “Then you should reply quickly, don’t delay important matters.”

“Mhm.” Shen Beidao took the phone. He looked calm on the surface, but a thin layer of sweat had formed on his palm. “No rush. It’ll be fine if I tell them in person at the meeting this afternoon.”

“Do you have time later?” Lin Yi remembered the main reason he was there. “I need to go to the designated medical examination center next.”

“I’ll drive you.” Shen Beidao answered quickly. “It doesn’t matter if I’m a little late. The meeting probably won’t start until five or six.”

“Great, then I won’t stand on ceremony!” Lin Yi smiled, his eyes curving. “Thank you, boyfriend.”

The two agreed to meet at the original school gate.

Shen Beidao used the excuse that “non-school personnel cannot enter” to retrieve his car alone.

This successfully avoided the awkwardness of using his employee card to enter the underground parking lot and using the faculty-exclusive parking space in front of Lin Yi.

The medical examination center was not far from Jiangzhou University, about a ten-kilometer drive.

After spending a few days together, Lin Yi had relaxed considerably around Shen Beidao. He was comfortably nestled in the passenger seat, munching on the snacks Shen Beidao had bought him, his cheeks puffed out.

While eating, Lin Yi suddenly remembered something and mumbled indistinctly, “Oh right, I lost my phone last time, and I can’t log into my old game account. Can I borrow your account to play?”

Shen Beidao’s fingers tightened slightly on the steering wheel. He raised an eyebrow and asked, “Are you talking about the Marco Boba Tea account?”

“Yep!” Lin Yi smiled. “I agreed to meet you back then because I thought your voice was especially nice, like a little puppy! I didn’t expect you to be…”

He deliberately drew out his words, looking Shen Beidao up and down. “A mature, steady, and dedicated fitness enthusiast…”

He admired Shen Beidao’s developed chest muscles, trying to think of the right adjective…

“Ah, I know! You’re very much like a handsome, aloof Doberman! Hahaha… Does that sound right?”

    Shen Beidao nodded. “A little.”

“Your temper is so good, you don’t even get mad when I call you a dog.” Lin Yi fed him a potato chip. “I’m just teasing you. I think you’re too serious normally, and I want you to smile more.”

Shen Beidao bit the chip and looked at Lin Yi. “Do you find me a bit boring?”

“Of course not. I like people who don’t talk much.” Lin Yi leaned closer, tilting his head. “I have a friend who talks a lot. I’ll introduce you two someday…”

    “Mhm, okay.”

Shen Beidao couldn’t help but picture a lively, active little rabbit happily pouncing on a tall, powerful Doberman for a snuggle. The corners of his lips curved up slightly.

He hadn’t expected that their logic for what animals they resembled would be so similar. They were truly a match made in heaven.

Shen Beidao said, “By the way, the phone I used to play that game accidentally fell into the water and won’t turn on.” Shen Beidao’s tone carried a hint of regret. “So I haven’t logged into that account for a long time.”

“Is that so…” Lin Yi was a little disappointed. “It’s okay. I’ll just register a new account later and add you as a friend!”

Lin Yi said, pulling out his phone and tapping the game icon. “Did you log in using WeChat?”

Shen Beidao glanced at his phone screen out of the corner of his eye, but realized Lin Yi had put on an anti-peeping film at some point, making the content completely illegible.

    “Yes,” Shen Beidao replied.

“But I can’t find you…” Lin Yi fiddled with it for a while, then looked up in confusion.

“We’re almost at the medical center,” Shen Beidao pointed to the road sign ahead. “You go for your checkup first, and we can add each other after you finish, okay?”

“Fine.” Lin Yi put away his phone, complaining softly, “It’s a shame I spent so much money on my original account! Last time I tried to contact customer service to recover it, they said I needed the original phone number verification. I really want to say: Wang X Glory, refund my money!”

Shen Beidao: …So that’s the game.

After dropping Lin Yi off at the medical center, Shen Beidao sat in the waiting area while Lin Yi queued up for his checkup. He took out his phone and opened a beginner’s tutorial video for a certain game, his expression as focused as if he were studying an academic paper…

After watching for a while, a message from Du Xiaoman popped up—a string of bank account numbers…

After Lin Yi followed Yu Feng into the office, Shen Beidao didn’t linger in the reception area.

He stood up and walked toward the stairwell of the fire escape.

By the window on the landing, he saw Du Xiaoman, who was taking a smoke break.

Shen Beidao walked over and got straight to the point: “Let’s talk.”

Du Xiaoman held the cigarette in his mouth, squinted at him, and spoke unpleasantly, “Who are you? Do I know you?”

Shen Beidao immediately took out his phone, pulled up the photo taken in the underground parking lot—the one with the angle distortion that made it look like a kiss—and turned the screen toward Du Xiaoman. “You took this, didn’t you? I’m the person in the photo.”

Du Xiaoman’s eyes flickered a few times after seeing the photo clearly.

The two then went to a secluded coffee shop downstairs from the company.

After sitting down, Shen Beidao glanced at his wristwatch and said concisely, “We only have five minutes to talk. To make a long story short, I’m buying this photo.”

“Name your price. I hope Lin Yi doesn’t find out about this matter, and I specifically mean the part where you sent this photo to his family.”

Du Xiaoman leaned back in his chair, scrutinizing Shen Beidao. “What’s your relationship with Lin Yi? …Boyfriends?”

Shen Beidao didn’t answer. His gaze swept over Du Xiaoman’s hand under the table. “Turn off your phone recording first. I only deal with people who are sincere. If you insist on playing these little tricks, then please feel free to leave.”

His voice wasn’t loud, but it carried an undeniable sense of pressure.

Du Xiaoman, exposed, showed a flash of embarrassment, but mostly confusion regarding this man’s actions.

He sullenly turned off the recording, cleared the history in front of Shen Beidao, and then slapped the phone onto the table. “Is this good enough?”

Shen Beidao glanced at the time again. “Four minutes left. My request is simple: pay for peace.”

Du Xiaoman still wanted to probe the other party’s background and his true relationship with Lin Yi, but seeing Shen Beidao’s calm demeanor—”only discussing transactions, not feelings”—he changed his strategy.

He laid his cards on the table, saying, “Five hundred thousand. I’ll delete the photo and guarantee not to spread it again.”

Shen Beidao: “I’ll give you one million. It will be transferred to your account before this time tomorrow. I hope you keep your promise and never let Lin Yi know about this matter, or our conversation today.”

He paused, his tone becoming more serious. “I already know that you sent the photo of him and me together to his mother. His mother contacted me, hoping I would break up with Lin Yi.”

“But I have clearly told her that my stance will not change. I only want to be with Lin Yi, and I don’t want anyone, in any way, to destroy our relationship.”

He watched Du Xiaoman’s slightly changing expression and continued his calm analysis. “Between adults, it’s about mutual benefit. The reason you stay by Xie Chun’s side isn’t for some vague, ethereal love, is it? What I’m doing is helping you achieve your goal. After taking the money, I believe you know what to do.”

Du Xiaoman was hit where it hurt. He pondered for a moment, finally forcing out a complicated, somewhat self-mocking smile. “You rich people are really interesting, willing to give away a million for an ambiguous photo.”

Shen Beidao looked at the bank card number Du Xiaoman sent and replied:

Shen Beidao [I need confirmation that this money is for you to delete all photos related to Lin Yi and me, and to guarantee no further dissemination]

Du Xiaoman [Just consider it paying for disaster relief. I’ll delete the photos completely and won’t bother you again]

Seeing the phrase “paying for disaster relief,” Shen Beidao curved his lips.

Shen Beidao [Please confirm two details: Besides the one sent to Lin Yi’s mother, are there any other backups? Will all materials be destroyed immediately upon receiving the money?]

Du Xiaoman [Are you interrogating me? It’s just one photo. Buy it or don’t. But I warn you, if I don’t see the money today, this photo will immediately appear on the forums of Jiangzhou University and the National Academy of Fine Arts.]

Du Xiaoman [Did you think I wasn’t prepared? I’ve already had someone look you up. You’re a teacher at Jiangzhou University. No wonder you’re so eager to delete the photo. Being gay must affect you quite a bit. Your license plate number is on there. I can report you to Jiangzhou University anytime.]

Shen Beidao looked at the threatening message and deliberately waited a moment before replying:

[It will arrive before 5 PM tomorrow. Please keep your promise]

[Smart move! However, I demand it arrives before 5 PM today! Not a penny less, or you’ll face the consequences]

Shen Beidao put away his phone. This conversation had fully documented Du Xiaoman’s evidence of threatening to spread the photo and extort money.

Lin Yi finished drawing blood, pressing the cotton swab on his arm, and walked out slowly, looking weak and pitiful.

Seeing Shen Beidao waiting at the door, he immediately found his support, quickly walked two steps, and gently rested his forehead against Shen Beidao’s chest, his voice carrying a hint of aggrieved nasal sound. “They drew so much blood… it still hurts a little!”

Shen Beidao looked at his spoiled expression, his heart softening. He smiled helplessly and indulgently, asking in a low voice, “Should I carry you?”

“That’s too embarrassing, with so many people watching.” Lin Yi pushed him away, but then couldn’t help but laugh himself. He rolled down his sleeve and muttered softly, “I just wanted you to feel sorry for me. I wonder if I achieved my goal.”

Shen Beidao took his hand, their fingers intertwined, and pulled him into an embrace, pressing him against his chest. Through the shirt, a rapid, strong vibration could be felt. “Listen to that.”
