Chapter Index

Lin Yi walked in silence, simply dragging Shen Beidao by the wrist, his head down as he moved forward.

The sunlight today was a little dazzling. It wasn’t until a crescent-shaped building came into view, its light blue glass curtain wall clearly reflecting the drifting clouds and blue sky, that Lin Yi felt the inexplicable gloom in his chest seemed to be somewhat dispersed by the bright scenery.

    “Lin Yi.”

Shen Beidao stopped, gently pulling back on his wrist.

Lin Yi was somewhat distracted. When Shen Beidao pulled him, he lost his balance and stumbled backward, his back landing steadily in a warm embrace.

Shen Beidao’s arms naturally wrapped around him, and his gentle voice sounded in Lin Yi’s ear: “Is there something I’m not doing well enough that makes you feel so insecure?”

    “Who, who is insecure!”

Lin Yi immediately sprang half a step away from his embrace, turning his face away and retorting, “It’s not because you’re so big and look so healthy that you don’t show symptoms even when you catch a cold! After what you just did… I’ll have to go back and drink a packet of 999 Cold Medicine just in case.”

Shen Beidao said, “I have some at my place.”

His gaze, which seemed threaded with the emotions Lin Yi had stirred, was intensely serious. “You can come to my place… to prevent it.”

Lin Yi’s face felt slightly warm. He reached out and gently pushed Shen Beidao away, secretly thinking: He looks so refined, but why does he try to lure me back to his place every time? Is he that eager to… I won’t let him succeed!

“I have things to do this afternoon,” Lin Yi lifted his chin, trying to maintain a professional demeanor. “I’ve started working at the company; I need to go back to work soon.”

“Then I’ll pick you up tonight…” Shen Beidao said.

“No way!” Lin Yi immediately refused, his cheeks growing hotter as he recalled the kiss in the public area earlier. “You act so rashly. How could you just… kiss someone in a place like that? It creates such a bad impression.”

Shen Beidao looked at his slightly flushed profile, his tone calm yet firm: “I don’t mind. Other people’s opinions don’t affect my opportunity to express my affection.”

“I mind!!” Lin Yi suddenly bristled. “Gay people aren’t accepted by everyone. Doing that will draw strange looks, don’t you understand?”

Shen Beidao was silent for a moment: “Strange looks are a result of their narrow understanding. Considering and accepting new things is what they need to do; we don’t need to reflect on ourselves.”

“We were just engaging in normal physical contact to express human emotion; we didn’t do anything wrong.”

Shen Beidao’s words made Lin Yi pause. He remembered the phone call his father’s phone received this morning when he went to Xie Chun’s company to complete his onboarding.

“Xie Chun, you can deceive me, but can you please spare our child? He is innocent… That little assistant you hired even called me, saying you had a very unpleasant meal together, and told me to control my son… Can you please stop taking Lin Yi to meet those indecent homosexuals…”

If his mother had used a tone of cursing or hatred, Lin Yi would have felt satisfied!

Yes, gay men who engage in deceptive marriage deserve to be scorned.

And he was the most pathetic product of that flawed marriage. What was even more ironic was that he inherited the genes etched into his biological father’s bones—he was also a damned homosexual.

Yet, his mother had used such a humble, almost pleading tone.

He, this existence born of a “mistake,” felt his heart being tightly squeezed by a great force. A dull ache spread, making it hard to breathe.

A woman with a good family background, high education, and her own company—a woman who lived a glamorous life—developed a mental illness because of a deceptive marriage and was almost sent to a psychiatric hospital…

“Lin Yi?” Shen Beidao keenly sensed the sharp drop in his mood. Those clear eyes were now clouded with gloom.

He softened his voice, sounding somewhat cautious, “Did something happen to you? If I did something wrong, you can tell me…”

Before he finished speaking, Lin Yi buried himself in his chest, his forehead resting against Shen Beidao’s firm shoulder. His body trembled slightly, uncontrollably.

A warm liquid quickly soaked into the fabric of Shen Beidao’s shirt, scalding his heart.

    He was… crying.

“I didn’t do anything wrong in the first place…” Lin Yi muffled his voice into Shen Beidao’s chest, thick with a nasal tone. “Why do I have to bear the mistakes they made…”

Shen Beidao felt the dampness on his chest and felt distressed himself.

He raised his hand and gently patted Lin Yi’s head, reassuringly, “There, there…”

He coaxed him softly: “Homosexuality itself is never a wrong word. It’s just that some older generations in our country are more conservative in their thinking. They feel fear and rejection because they don’t understand.

But many countries in the world have already recognized same-sex marriage. This shows that this group has always existed, and its numbers cannot be ignored…

If you feel I was too high-profile, I’ll be more careful next time, okay?”

Perhaps sensing the unconditional favoritism, Lin Yi developed a spoiled petulance, punching him twice in a venting manner and muttering, “Anyway, you’re the one who’s embarrassed, not me. This is your school.”

“Mhm.” Shen Beidao allowed his actions, tightening his embrace slightly. “I’m truly afraid that if I accidentally lose you, I won’t be able to find you again.”

Shen Beidao vaguely guessed what was happening.

Perhaps, regarding their future, he needed to be more proactive, taking more initiative to better protect this seemingly flamboyant but actually sensitive and fragile child.

The vibration of his phone rang at an inopportune moment.

Lin Yi reached for his pocket. He was a little reluctant to leave Shen Beidao’s warm embrace, so he half-leaned on him as he unlocked the screen.

    Caller ID: Xie Chun

“Hello.” He sniffled, trying to make his voice sound normal. “What is it?”

“Xiao Yi? Do you have a cold?”

Lin Yi glanced at Shen Beidao, pushed him away slightly, and vaguely replied, “Yes, I was just infected by a classmate who had a cold.”

“Infected?” Xie Chun’s follow-up question carried excessive concern. “What did you do that would cause infection?”

Lin Yi hadn’t expected him to press the issue and was momentarily speechless. Subconsciously, he looked up at Shen Beidao again, only to see a face darker than the bottom of a wok.

“Nothing… just, staying together for a long time makes it easy to get infected,” Lin Yi coughed guiltily. “Ahem, stop asking. What did you need me for?”

“Come back to the company later. As required by the HR department, go to the designated institution for a pre-employment physical exam. I haven’t disclosed our relationship to anyone at the company. This is so you can adapt to the environment faster and not be treated differently.”

“Oh, got it.” Hmph! Does he really think he’s grooming me as an heir? Don’t forget, my surname is Lin, after my mother, not after you.

“I have to return to the US this afternoon. I probably won’t be back until next month. Your direct supervisor, who is also the general manager of the company in Jiangzhou, is named Yu Feng. He’s a very capable person; learn from him.”

“Alright, alright, got it, hanging up.”

The call ended. Lin Yi turned around, only to find that Shen Beidao had moved right behind him at some point. The distance between them was almost negative.

He still maintained his usual composure, at least not snatching the phone and demanding to know who this strange man was.

    “Whose call?” Shen Beidao asked.

Lin Yi opened his mouth, but before he could utter a syllable, Shen Beidao continued, clearly stating his observations:

“His name is Xie Chun, a man’s name. He sounded very concerned about you on the phone, not like a casual acquaintance.”

“He also inquired about your privacy.”

Lin Yi looked at him—so obviously concerned, yet trying hard to maintain rational analysis—and suddenly found it amusing. He even laughed so hard that a snot bubble popped out.

Seeing this, Shen Beidao pulled a tissue from his pocket and handed it over, his brow slightly furrowed, looking at him worriedly, but waiting for his explanation.

“What privacy did he ask about?” Lin Yi took the tissue, unable to resist teasing him. “Eavesdropping on my call, and listening so carefully?”

Shen Beidao: “He asked you what we did that would cause infection. You didn’t say we kissed, nor did you mention at the critical moment that you have a boyfriend.”

    “Pfft—”

Lin Yi finally couldn’t hold back his laughter. While wiping his nose with the tissue, he continued to tease him: “Let’s not talk about that first. Why didn’t you have a runny nose when you had a cold, yet you infected me so quickly? How long have we been together?”

“Then you can infect me back.”

    “Huh?”

Shen Beidao’s eyes darkened. He suddenly stepped forward, pressed the back of Lin Yi’s head with one hand, and lowered his head to block the lips that were still quibbling.

This was a kiss meant as punishment, even dominating and deeply invasive, as if to confirm something or strip something away.

Lin Yi initially tried to resist but found himself completely immobilized in those seemingly gentle arms.

He had no choice but to suppress his laughter and endure the long, deep kiss.

Their tightly intertwined figures were clearly reflected on the clear lake surface nearby.

A breeze swept by, causing ripples on the water, and their reflection gently swayed, as if being shattered and then reformed.

The water silently bore witness to their affection and intimacy.

They might be temporarily confined to a place that emphasized tradition, but 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. If they weren’t accepted here, they could simply move to a broader body of water. Love should flow freely like water, and the essence of love is freedom.

    “Haha… Hahahaha…”

Lin Yi finally couldn’t hold back, laughing intermittently during the lingering kiss.

He gently pushed Shen Beidao away, tears of laughter welling up in the corners of his eyes. “Shen Beidao, are you jealous? You’re quite the jealous type.”

“Should I remain magnanimous when you are having an intimate conversation with a man of unknown identity right in front of me?” Shen Beidao’s frown deepened, his tone carrying a rare, almost petulant frankness. “If one can still maintain so-called magnanimity at a time like this, it must be fake.”

He looked at Lin Yi: “I don’t want to pretend.”

“Alright, alright, you want to know who he is, right?”

Looking at him like this, the gloom brought on by Lin Yi’s family matters strangely dissipated a lot, leaving only the sweet taste of love that was almost overflowing.

Shen Beidao averted his gaze, his tone stiff. “I don’t really want to know now.”

No matter who the other person was, they seemed like a potential third party trying to intervene. True love would not be easily stolen by a third party.

Shen Beidao had that much confidence.

“Let’s go.” Lin Yi proactively took his hand, his fingers threading through Shen Beidao’s to interlock them. “Accompany me back to the company to fill out a form. It’s only eight hundred meters away…”

As he spoke, he naturally hooked his other arm around Shen Beidao’s neck, almost jumping up to half-hang on him.

Shen Beidao subtly bent down to cooperate, his arm supporting him steadily.

From behind, the tall Lin Yi suddenly looked very much like a koala clinging to a towering tree, his entire body pressed against Shen Beidao’s side.

“This starts twenty-two years ago,” Lin Yi swung their clasped hands, still suppressing a laugh. “Twenty-two years ago, a lady named Lin Jingzhi and a gentleman named Xie Chun got married in a rush and had a child. When the child was born, they named him Lin Yi.”

He paused, leaned over, and kissed Shen Beidao’s cheek, leaving a loud ‘pop’ sound, before continuing: “Time flies, and the years pass quickly. So now, Mr. Shen Beidao, very fortunately, has a boyfriend named Lin Yi.”

Shen Beidao had been listening quietly and seriously to his “nonsense.” It wasn’t until Lin Yi finished that he reacted.

He stopped walking and looked at Lin Yi: “Xie Chun… is Uncle?”

“Yup!” Lin Yi smiled proudly. “That’s right, he’s your future father-in-law.”

    Shen Beidao: “…”
