    Chapter 14 The Mastermind

“It was… it was Su Wei’s son, Su Ziyao. As for why he targeted you, Mr. Su, I truly don’t know!”

“Not knowing is a good thing,” Su Chenhui said flatly. “The less you know, the longer you live. Get lost.”

“Thank you, Mr. Su, for sparing my life!” Sun Sui felt as if he had been granted a general amnesty and quickly turned to flee Su Chenhui’s villa.

Su Chenhui gestured to the two bodyguards. “You two can leave too.”

    “Yes, Young Master.”

Shen Lingfeng was still standing there blankly, slightly stunned and unsure how to react.

“Did you really think I had a basement and eighteen kinds of torture implements?” Su Chenhui suddenly smiled faintly. “I’m not a mob boss; I’m a law-abiding citizen.”

“So you were just scaring him?!” Shen Lingfeng immediately let out a long sigh of relief.

A law-abiding citizen… the demeanor just now certainly didn’t suggest that!

“What is the relationship between you and that Su Ziyao he mentioned?”

“That’s none of your business,” Su Chenhui immediately dropped his smile. “I also don’t know why he is targeting me. That much is true.”

At this moment, Su Wei fiercely slammed a stack of papers onto Su Ziyao’s face.

“Look at this! These are letters sent by the audience, and they are tearing apart our Tiansu Media, calling us a garbage company that specializes in cheating people out of money. Someone even included a razor blade!”

“I put you in charge of supervising this entire series, and look at the mess it’s become! All the viewers are saying only the first few episodes were watchable. They paid for website memberships because of those initial episodes, and then the rest was completely padded out, the quality utterly horrendous!”

Su Ziyao, who was listening with his head bowed, couldn’t help but whisper when he heard this, “It can’t all be my fault, can it? Isn’t the main blame on the scriptwriter?”

“You dare to shirk responsibility?!” Su Wei grew even angrier at the remark, delivering a sharp slap to Su Ziyao’s face, instantly making his cheek swell. “Why didn’t you properly vet the script the writer submitted! Do you think you did absolutely nothing wrong?! Your wings have grown hard, and now you dare to talk back to me! Go fetch the family discipline rod!”

“Dad! I was wrong!” Su Ziyao immediately knelt down and slapped his own other cheek hard, making both sides swell symmetrically.

He knew the power of that discipline rod. Su Wei had always been extremely strict with him since childhood, demanding high grades when he was studying, and any slackness resulted in a severe beating.

Now Su Ziyao had been out of university for a year or two, and Su Wei had high expectations for his career. He had only stopped frequently hitting him because he was older. But Su Ziyao still clearly remembered the pain of having his backside whipped raw by the rod. So, hearing the words “family discipline” made him tremble all over.

“Dad, I truly know I was wrong. Please, I beg you, spare me this time! I promise I will work much harder in the future!”

“Forget it.” Seeing Su Ziyao’s good attitude in admitting his mistake, Su Wei’s anger subsided slightly. “Go write a self-reflection report for me. Deeply analyze which part of the work process went wrong and how to avoid such problems in the future. At least five thousand characters. Give it to me by tomorrow.”

“Thank you, Dad!” Su Ziyao was overjoyed, as if he had survived a disaster, and stood up. “I’ll go write it right now!”

“If it were your brother, he would never make such a low-level mistake!”

The last sentence Su Wei added struck Su Ziyao’s heart like a thorny whip, instantly drawing blood.

He returned to his room and closed the door.

“Damn it!” Su Ziyao complained bitterly to his personal assistant, Jun Lin. “Tell me, which production company in the world can guarantee that every series is a masterpiece and never produces trash? That old man just knows how to beat and scold me every day, constantly criticizing me!”

Jun Lin merely said, “The Master’s strict requirements are also for your own good.”

“Screw your ‘for my own good’! I hate hearing those words the most!”

Su Ziyao wasn’t surprised that Jun Lin would side with Su Wei.

Jun Lin was Su Ziyao’s special assistant, responsible for protecting his safety, managing his life, and providing some work assistance. Su Wei had carefully selected him as an all-around talent.

However, Jun Lin had followed Su Ziyao for many years and was quite loyal to him. Sometimes when Su Ziyao made a mistake, he would cover for him in front of Su Wei. Therefore, Su Ziyao had long considered him an insider and felt safe complaining about his father in front of him.

“He never treats his precious eldest son like this… Forget hitting him, he speaks to him so gently! It’s a pity that guy never appreciates it, refusing even to call him ‘Dad.’ Heh, people are probably just perverse—the ones who ignore you are the ones you value most.”

    Su Ziyao mocked him sarcastically.

Since childhood, he had heard phrases like, “Look how outstanding your brother is,” so often that his ears were calloused.

But Su Ziyao had to admit that Su Chenhui was a genius. That’s why he seemed to excel in school effortlessly despite never studying hard, and getting into the nation’s top art academy was a piece of cake.

Su Ziyao, on the other hand, always studied diligently to avoid beatings, but unfortunately, his talent was mediocre, and his grades were only slightly above average.

Su Ziyao was powerless to change his innate talent, so he could only harbor deep jealousy toward Su Chenhui.

Jun Lin fetched a cold towel and walked toward the still-grumbling Su Ziyao. “Apply this.”

“…Mm.” Su Ziyao finally paused his complaints about Su Wei and Su Chenhui, taking the towel, but he quickly recoiled after touching his face. “Damn! It’s so cold! It feels like I’ve fallen into an ice cellar!”

“Be obedient.” Jun Lin held Su Ziyao’s body with one hand and firmly pressed the towel onto his face with the other. “You need to apply it for a while to reduce the swelling. How will you go out tomorrow with a swollen face?”

“Obedient my foot! Are you my subordinate or my master!” Su Ziyao tried to struggle.

“If you keep this up,” Jun Lin’s expression darkened, “I’ll go tell the Master everything you’ve done.”

“…Don’t!” Su Ziyao immediately gave in. “I’ll listen to whatever you say, alright!”

If Su Wei found out about that matter, not only would his backside be ruined, but he might even have his legs broken.

Su Ziyao had no choice but to settle down, allowing Jun Lin to help him with the ice pack.

Although ice application in such cold weather was indeed agonizing, besides the bone-chilling cold of the towel, Su Ziyao could also feel the warm body temperature of Jun Lin, who was standing very close, and it didn’t seem so unbearable anymore.

As it was late, Su Ziyao’s consciousness gradually blurred, and he collapsed onto the bed. Jun Lin remained by his bedside, tending to his injuries.

The next morning, Su Ziyao found that the swelling on his face had gone down and breathed a sigh of relief.

However, since it was the weekend, he didn’t want to go to the company to work overtime, so he took Jun Lin out for a stroll.

While walking down a small alley, he was suddenly surrounded by several men in black suits and sunglasses.

“What are you doing!” Jun Lin immediately became alert, flexing his muscles and preparing to strike.

“No need to be so nervous.” The men in black parted, and a man walked through them. “Su Ziyao, I just want to ask you why you did such a thing.”
