Chapter 14 The Confidence of the Official Girlfriend

Su Jin slept restlessly all night, her dreams a tangled mess.

The moment dawn broke, she opened her eyes, staring blankly at the ceiling for a long time before remembering where she was.

She got out of bed quietly, afraid of waking Ye Qinglan next door. As she pushed open her door, she vaguely heard sounds of an argument coming from downstairs.

Su Jin instinctively softened her footsteps, holding the stair railing as she slowly descended.

“I already told you!” Ye Qinglan’s voice carried a hint of anger. “I have made my decision on this matter, and there is no need to discuss it further.”

A muffled voice came from the other end of the phone, seemingly still trying to persuade her.

Ye Qinglan’s tone suddenly rose several degrees: “Zhao Man, I don’t need to account for my private life to anyone. If the company has a problem, they can terminate the contract.”

Su Jin’s heart skipped a beat, and her fingers unconsciously tightened around the railing.

She hadn’t expected Ye Qinglan to be in such a fierce dispute with the company just to officially announce their relationship. Was it all because she resembled that “old friend”? She hadn’t expected someone who appeared so aloof to be capable of such deep affection.

She couldn’t help but sigh deeply, unsure if it was for Ye Qinglan or for herself, the “stand-in.”

She didn’t know what the person on the other end said, but Ye Qinglan suddenly flared up, which was rare: “Enough! This matter ends here. I don’t want to say it a second time.”

The phone was slammed down, and the living room fell into a terrifying silence.

Su Jin hesitated, wondering whether to retreat to her room, but her foot landed on the wooden floor, making a slight sound.

“Who is it?” Ye Qinglan turned around alertly.

Su Jin had no choice but to walk down awkwardly: “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop…”

Ye Qinglan’s expression instantly softened: “You’re awake? Why didn’t you sleep longer?”

“I… I heard you on the phone.” Su Jin bit her lower lip. “If announcing the relationship is causing you so much trouble, I can cooperate with a clarification.”

Ye Qinglan walked a few steps closer and smiled: “No need. I will handle these things.”

    “But…”

“No buts.” Ye Qinglan interrupted her. “Go wash up. Auntie has made breakfast.”

Su Jin nodded and turned to walk upstairs, but heard Ye Qinglan whisper behind her: “You look very nice today.”

Her heart immediately pounded like thunder. She rushed into the bathroom, turned on the faucet, and splashed cold water on her face, trying to calm herself down.

“Host, you’re blushing,” the System suddenly spoke.

“Shut up!” Su Jin snapped in embarrassment. “I’m just… just too hot!”

The System gave a meaningful “Oh”: “Then why are your ears red too?”

Su Jin refused to answer, concentrating on brushing her teeth and washing her face.

When she was tidied up and went downstairs, the aroma of breakfast already filled the living room.

Ye Qinglan was sitting at the dining table, reading a script. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a soft golden glow around her.

Hearing footsteps, she looked up, her gaze lingering on Su Jin for a few seconds.

“Let’s eat,” she said, pointing to the chair beside her.

Su Jin sat down and saw the table laden with various breakfast items: steamed buns, dumplings, soy milk, fried dough sticks… It was so lavish it looked more like a banquet than breakfast.

“This much… can the two of us finish it?” Su Jin asked in surprise.

Ye Qinglan poured her a cup of soy milk: “I wasn’t sure what you liked, so I asked Auntie to prepare a variety.”

As a foodie, Su Jin’s appetite was immediately stimulated. She quickly picked up a steamed bun and took a bite. The delicious soup burst instantly in her mouth: “This is so good!”

Ye Qinglan watched her satisfied expression, the corners of her mouth unconsciously curving upward: “Slow down, be careful not to burn yourself.”

For the next few moments, the only sound at the dining table was the gentle clinking of cutlery.

Su Jin could feel Ye Qinglan’s gaze fixed on her face, making her nervous.

“Do you… not have to go to the Film Set today?” Su Jin finally broke the silence.

Ye Qinglan nodded: “I’ll go to the Film Set after I finish eating.” She paused. “How did you sleep last night? Are you comfortable here?”

“It was… alright,” Su Jin answered vaguely, unwilling to admit she had tossed and turned for half the night.

Ye Qinglan seemed to see through her thoughts, a hint of a smile flashing in her eyes: “That’s good.”

    Another silence fell.

Su Jin racked her brain for a topic, but then, as if possessed, she asked: “That… the ‘old friend’ you mentioned, what kind of person was she?”

The moment the words left her mouth, she regretted it. She knew she was a stand-in, why invite humiliation?

But a voice deep inside urged her: Ask clearly, it’s better to know who you are supposed to be playing.

Ye Qinglan’s expression instantly became complex.

She put down her chopsticks and looked at Su Jin with a distant gaze: “She… was very special.”

“Especially kind, especially brave, and she never bowed down to power,” Ye Qinglan’s voice was soft, like she was recounting a distant dream. “She always thought of others, even at the expense of herself.”

A pang of bitterness rose in Su Jin’s heart. She sounded like a truly perfect person…

“To help me, she even went so far as to…” Ye Qinglan suddenly stopped, shaking her head. “In short, she was the best person I have ever met.”

Su Jin managed a forced smile: “She sounds wonderful… I can never compare to her.”

Ye Qinglan’s gaze focused on her face, carrying an indescribable emotion: “No, I think you are just as good as she was.”

This sentence was like a blunt knife, slowly stabbing into Su Jin’s heart.

No, she wasn’t like her at all. She would compromise with the System out of fear; she wasn’t that brave.

Su Jin lowered her head, mechanically chewing her food, her mood instantly sinking.

After breakfast, Ye Qinglan stood up to clear the dishes: “You don’t have scenes today, so you can rest well at home. I’m heading to the Film Set now.”

Su Jin nodded: “Be careful on the road.”

Ye Qinglan seemed about to say something, but ultimately just gave a soft “Mm” and turned to go upstairs to change before leaving.

Su Jin sat on the living room sofa, spacing out. For some reason, thinking about her conversation with Ye Qinglan and how perfect her ‘white moonlight’ was, she felt uneasy and her mood became low.

“What is wrong with me?” She was startled by her own thoughts.

The System chimed in at the right moment: “It’s obvious. You’re jealous.”

“I am not!” Su Jin retorted angrily. “I just… I just feel uncomfortable being a stand-in!”

The System gave a meaningful “Oh” and said nothing more.

Su Jin shook her head, refusing to dwell on this complicated issue, and diverted her attention by walking towards the kitchen.

In the kitchen, a kind middle-aged Auntie was tidying up.

“Hello, Auntie,” Su Jin greeted politely.

The Auntie turned around in surprise: “Oh my, you must be Miss Su? Miss Ye specifically told me to make extra of everything you like.”

Su Jin felt a little embarrassed: “Thank you, Auntie. Breakfast was delicious.”

“Miss Ye rarely brings people home,” the Auntie said while washing dishes. “She usually doesn’t talk much, and the house is always quiet.”

Su Jin asked curiously: “What does she usually do at home?”

“Reads, exercises, occasionally plays the piano,” the Auntie thought for a moment. “Oh, and she doesn’t let anyone into her study. There’s a photo frame in there that she never lets anyone touch. Once, when I was cleaning, I accidentally knocked it over, and she got very angry.”

Su Jin’s heart stirred. Could it be a photo of that “old friend”? Her curiosity grew.

The Auntie quickly finished cleaning the kitchen and left, leaving Su Jin alone in the empty villa.

It wasn’t until her phone suddenly vibrated with a message from Sister Li: [Xiao Jin, a variety show wants to invite you and Film Empress Ye to participate. The pay is very generous!]

Su Jin decisively replied: [Not going.]

Immediately followed by several more messages, all invitations for shows and brand collaborations.

Su Jin rejected them one by one, finally silencing her phone and lying on the sofa scrolling through it out of boredom.

The trending topic #YeQinglanSuJinRelationship# was still high up, and the comment section was exploding.

[Heh, an eighteen-line nobody clinging to the Film Empress, quite the schemer.]

[Who is Su Jin? Never heard of her. How is she worthy of our Film Empress Ye?]

[She must have used the casting couch to get ahead. Look at her, such a green tea.]

The more Su Jin read, the angrier she got. What kind of people were these, slandering her reputation so casually?

Even though she was a “stand-in,” she was still Ye Qinglan’s officially announced girlfriend. She wouldn’t stand for it.

So, Su Jin, feeling completely justified, quickly typed on the screen: [@LemonEssence: I can smell the sourness through the screen. Who she likes is none of your damn business!]

With this comment fanning the flames, the comment section became even more heated.

The trolls started attacking fiercely, their combat power strong, immediately igniting Su Jin’s fighting spirit.

She got more and more into the argument, switching to her main account and posting a photo of the same background she and Ye Qinglan had shared recently, with the caption: “Good morning~ The garden view is lovely~ [Heart]” deliberately blurring the focus to encourage speculation.

The anti-fans predictably went even more insane:

[Shameless! Posting photos of the Film Empress’s private residence!]

[Just wait until you get kicked out!]

Su Jin sat with her legs crossed, munching on an apple while passionately engaging in the online battle:

[@LittleFanofFilmEmpressYe: Sorry, my Qinglan personally gave me the key.]

[@ProfessionalTroll: Are you mad? I’m lying on the sofa right now.]

To her surprise, this move attracted quite a few passersby who became fans:

[Hahaha, this girl is so fierce! I love it!]

    [I like your arrogance. Followed.]

[You eat so well! Can you give us sisters some fan service? We want to see a photo of the Film Empress’s abs!]

Su Jin froze. Good heavens, she hadn’t realized Ye Qinglan had abs!

Driven by the urge to show off, she replied: [No problem! I’ll take one when she gets back~]

Though she knew perfectly well that she wouldn’t dare actually take a photo of Ye Qinglan’s abs.

After finishing her battle with the trolls, Su Jin felt refreshed and her mood lifted.

When the Auntie came to cook lunch, she took a few more photos, deliberately choosing angles that made the dining table look set for two. She immediately posted on Weibo: “Lunch specially prepared by a certain someone~ [Heart]”

The comment section was filled with another round of wailing.

“Host, you are quite the storyteller…” the System couldn’t help but complain.

“This is called strategic deception!” Su Jin declared righteously. “Ye Qinglan doesn’t look at Weibo anyway. Let’s just infuriate those anti-fans first~”

In the afternoon, bored, she wandered around the villa.

The small garden behind the villa was meticulously maintained, with various flowers blooming. Su Jin sat on a rattan chair, watching butterflies flutter among the flowers, feeling as leisurely as a pampered canary.

“Host, don’t forget your mission,” the System reminded her inappropriately.

Su Jin frowned: “There’s still a mission?”

“The Hot Spring Play!” the System said excitedly. “Now that you’re living together, there are plenty of opportunities!”

Su Jin’s face instantly flushed: “You… you’re starting with your nonsense again!”

“According to the plot development, the crew will go to the Hot Spring Resort next week for location shooting. That will be the best time for you to complete the mission!” The System planned enthusiastically. “You can use the excuse of soaking in the hot spring…”

“Shut up!” Su Jin gritted her teeth. “I won’t do it!”

System: “Then are you prepared to accept the Punishment?”

“Of course not.” Su Jin stood up, pacing back and forth in the garden, frustrated. She didn’t want to hurt Ye Qinglan, and she certainly didn’t want to use such despicable methods. But the System’s Punishment filled her with dread.

She protested indignantly: “Why does it have to follow such a perverse plot?”

“Because this is a Restricted Novel world,” the System stated matter-of-factly. “How can it work without smut?”

    Su Jin was instantly speechless.
