Chapter 12: The Dog is Angry, Woof Woof Woof Woof Woof Woof Woof…

Si Jiu ignored the Director’s hesitant silence and Ran Lie’s continuous protests. He said calmly, “I mean what I say, Mr. Ran.”

The black muzzle on Ran Lie instantly tightened into an arc, and he didn’t “Woof” again. However, his cheeks puffed out, and the defiance in his black-gold eyes settled, replaced by a faint, lingering sense of grievance.

“Hey, Caregiver Si has to work, after all.” A faint but tense silence spread through the office. The Elephant Director couldn’t help but pull out a handkerchief to wipe the sweat from his forehead, smiling as he tried to mediate.

Ran Lie let out a low growl, “Woof—woo,” and gave the long-nosed Director a cold side-eye, startling the Director so much that his two large ears spread wide and his trunk straightened.

—”What do you mean?!” Clearly, the Director had walked right into the line of fire. The translation software kindly reminded them that the other party’s anger level was skyrocketing.

“Mr. Ran, calm down, calm down! What I mean is, there are surveillance cameras in the sanatorium that show the caregivers’ work. If you, if you don’t trust Caregiver Si, you can watch the monitoring feed here with me.” The Elephant Director said, winking at Si Jiu.

The meaning was clear: Help me, help me! Your leader desperately needs your assistance!

Si Jiu sighed, stepped forward, and gently pinched the large dog’s slightly bulging black muzzle—ah, it immediately deflated, and the wild, gloomy look in his eyes vanished.

“Be good. I’ll make you something delicious tonight.” His hand moved down, his palm sliding along the smooth fur of the large dog’s neck, gently supporting his well-defined chin. Si Jiu lowered his head slightly and spoke softly to the dog.

Ran Lie took the opportunity to lift his head, offering his pair of handsome, erect ears. When Si Jiu’s hand gently scratched the most sensitive hollow beneath his jaw, the large dog’s entire body musculature suddenly relaxed. His erect ears involuntarily folded back, and a long, puppy-like whimper escaped his throat. And then—

    “Woof woof, woof woof woof!”

—”Come pick me up early, or I will come find you.” The large dog nudged Si Jiu’s palm with his wet nose. His canine teeth clicked crisply in the air, and the translation software, seemingly startled, immediately displayed the text.

Si Jiu knew that he also meant what he said. It looked like he needed to speed up his work this afternoon.

Ran Lie was reluctant, but he still kept his promise and stayed in the Director’s office. During this time, the Elephant Director kept smiling and assured Si Jiu that he would stay with the large dog and prevent him from interfering with Si Jiu’s work.

But the moment Si Jiu’s figure disappeared down the corridor, the relaxed atmosphere in the office instantly solidified.

The instant the office door silently closed, Ran Lie slowly raised his head. The brown eyes that were always clear and lively when facing Si Jiu were now sharp as an eagle’s.

The Elephant Director’s long trunk drooped slightly. He stood up to face Ran Lie, his Human Form Transformation body suddenly rigid. His legs clicked together with a crisp sound. His large ears were pressed tightly against the sides of his neck, and his long trunk curled into a standard spiral as he rendered an impeccable military salute to Ran Lie.

“General, I apologize for my earlier disrespect.”

Ran Lie did not respond immediately. He paced a few steps in the Director’s thick-carpeted office with an arrogant and elegant gait, his paw pads landing silently. His black, slender tail maintained a cool and defiant arc behind him. Finally, he stopped in the center of the office, lifting his head slightly. The afternoon light from outside, filtered through the drawn curtains, outlined his sharp profile and upright ear shape.

“It’s fine.” Ran Lie spoke slowly, his voice deep and magnetic, but he was speaking the human language. His amber pupils turned toward the Elephant Director, and he said lightly, “The surveillance?”

The Elephant Director’s spirits lifted. He exclaimed in surprise, “Your language function—it has recovered?”

Ran Lie gave an uncommitted upward glance, which was enough to stop the Elephant Beastman from asking any more questions. He immediately stepped aside respectfully, his long trunk deftly picking up a remote control disguised as a decoration on the desk. “It’s ready. This way, General.”

As he pressed the button, a seemingly solid wall next to the bookshelf silently slid open, revealing the hidden surveillance room behind it. The room was dimly lit with a cool blue light, highly technological in appearance.

The moment the automatic door opened, four massive monitoring screens were revealed, their cold light illuminating Ran Lie’s face. Ran Lie walked in with measured steps, then lightly leaped, landing steadily on the wide black leather chair in front of the main control panel.

The large dog extended a front paw and, with precise and practiced movements, pressed several key control buttons on the operating interface. The next second, all four screens simultaneously switched to real-time footage from different angles—

All focused on the recently departed Si Jiu.

Si Jiu was still busy this afternoon and hadn’t even entered the break room, but he did take a moment to go to the sanatorium’s restaurant and buy a box of dried fish.

Holding the dried fish, he was about to turn the corner of the corridor when a figure rushed toward him and bumped into him head-on.

    “Ouch!”

Fortunately, the dried fish remained in his hand. Si Jiu looked up and realized it was Jun Qi, whom he had been looking for.

“I was looking for you—I promised you these dried fish…” Si Jiu hadn’t finished speaking when he noticed something was wrong.

Jun Qi, who always paid meticulous attention to his appearance, looked somewhat disheveled. The top button of his well-tailored, high-grade caregiver uniform was undone, and his carefully styled silver curly hair was messy. His signature heterochromatic eyes were filled with obvious panic, and he was looking around as if searching for a crucial target.

Si Jiu was infected by the rare tension emanating from him. He had originally intended to offer a few more words of explanation about Ran Lie’s behavior at noon, but he immediately set that aside and asked with concern, “Jun Qi? What’s wrong? What happened?”

Hearing the familiar voice, Jun Qi snapped his head up as if grasping a life raft. His tone was fast and urgent, with a noticeable tremor. “Si Jiu, did you see… did you see the Nurse Manager this afternoon?”

“The Nurse Manager? I greeted her this morning in front of the Sanatorium A-Wing wards. This afternoon, did she perhaps go to the hospital to help out?” Si Jiu frowned slightly, but his voice was calm. He tried to soothe Jun Qi and help him calm down.

“That was the plan, but the hospital just called to say they haven’t been able to reach the Nurse Manager. She said she was bringing medicine over an hour ago, but the medicine hasn’t arrived, and the hospital is frantic—the Nurse Manager never makes mistakes like this!” Jun Qi tried hard to recall details. He said, “It only takes a quarter of an hour to get from the sanatorium to the nearby hospital. If she left an hour ago, she should have arrived long ago… Her Alert Band hasn’t responded either…”

“Have you asked the other nurses and caregivers?” Si Jiu calmly raised the Alert Band on his wrist.

“Not yet. I thought the Nurse Manager might be doing rounds, so I decided to check the wards one by one first.” Jun Qi’s reasoning wasn’t without merit. Late afternoon was indeed the Nurse Manager’s time for rounds, and if she was talking to patients, she might not have time to check her alert messages.

But the Nurse Manager had said an hour ago that she would take the medicine to the hospital, and she knew the medicine was urgently needed by the hospital…

Si Jiu took a deep breath, forcing himself to remain calm. He gently pressed Jun Qi’s slightly trembling arm, his voice steady but carrying undeniable authority. “Jun Qi, listen to me. Right now, go to the pharmacy and retrieve another batch of the medicine the hospital needs as quickly as possible. I will go to the security office to confirm whether the Nurse Manager left the sanatorium this afternoon.”

He raised his hand and pointed toward the main building, clearly outlining the next steps. “Then, we will meet at the main gate.”

Si Jiu’s composure was like a cool breeze, slightly dissipating the Persian Cat Beastman’s anxiety. His heterochromatic eyes focused slightly, and he instinctively asked, “Xiao Jiu, are you going to…?” In his mind, the immediate priority should be finding the Nurse Manager, and he had expected Si Jiu to split up with him to search the wards.

“This is the fastest way to pinpoint her location.” Si Jiu’s tone was level, and he quickly explained the clear logic to Jun Qi in the most concise words. “If the Nurse Manager hasn’t left the sanatorium, the search area is narrowed down. We can immediately use the Alert Bands to mobilize all nurses and caregiver colleagues to search, or directly ask the Director to pull up the internal surveillance. Finding her will only be a matter of time.”

“Therefore, to avoid delaying the hospital’s medication, if we can find her in time, it’s best if she delivers it herself. If there isn’t enough time, or if she is temporarily unable, the most time-efficient solution is for us, who will already be at the main gate, to deliver it directly.”

Si Jiu paused. An ominous premonition made his right eyelid twitch slightly. He instinctively reached into his caregiver uniform pocket—that item was still there, but it wasn’t enough… he needed to bring a few more.

Si Jiu’s voice remained steady, but his pace quickened slightly, revealing his inner seriousness. “And if she has already left the sanatorium… that means she was likely delayed by something on the road. In this case, we must leave immediately with the backup medicine. On one hand, we ensure the hospital receives the medicine promptly. On the other hand, we search along the way. If she has indeed encountered trouble, we can respond immediately. If we can’t find any trace along the route…”

Si Jiu looked calmly at Jun Qi. “Once we arrive at the hospital, we call the police immediately.”

Si Jiu’s well-organized and comprehensive analysis acted like a safety net, catching the Persian Cat Beastman’s frantically falling heart. At the same time, Jun Qi suddenly remembered, “Yes, yes! The hospital is rushing us. This special medicine can only be provided by our sanatorium! They urged us over the phone to send it immediately!”

Jun Qi pursed his lips. The immense anxiety made him instinctively seek reliance. When his beautiful heterochromatic eyes looked at Si Jiu, they held a pleading yet slightly embarrassed expression. His fluffy large tail timidly swayed behind him, and his voice dropped a few octaves. “You… you’ll come with me, right, Si Jiu?”

Looking at his colleague, who resembled a lost kitten, a gentle smile appeared on Si Jiu’s face. He nodded, his tone reassuring. “Of course. Consider it compensation for my dog scaring you at noon, along with the dried fish.”

“That terrifying dog? So scary, meow! Is he yours now?” Jun Qi, whose usual spirit had returned now that he had a solution, turned toward the pharmacy, not forgetting to tease Si Jiu.

“The dog living at my place,” Si Jiu sighed, still clarifying.

On the other side, in the Director’s surveillance room, Ran Lie stared at the monitors, his expression exceptionally gloomy. His paw impatiently tapped the control panel. He had been annoyed the moment Jun Qi appeared, and this Persian Cat Beastman dared to approach Si Jiu and talk to him! Si Jiu not only held his shoulder but also gave him something!

Why does he get dried fish, and I don’t! Although dogs don’t eat dried fish, why don’t I have any!

If he hadn’t heard that their conversation was relatively normal later, the large dog would have rushed out long ago.

However, it wasn’t too late now.

He quickly pulled up several surveillance clips to track the Nurse Manager’s movements, then jumped off the leather chair without hesitation.

“General, where are you going?” The Elephant Director, who was just walking in with a plate of fruit, only felt a blur of black-brown wind rush past him.

“Something came up.” Ran Lie didn’t say a single extra word. He left the Director’s office without looking back and sprinted toward the main gate of the sanatorium.

Dog: My wife thinks my woofing is cute, so I won’t speak human language for now (Actually, I can’t speak human language fluently, only one or two words at a time, so it’s not a high-and-mighty dog persona).

Director: Am I part of your two-person play? (Clown face)

Si Jiu: Ha, why is it so hard to work in peace?
