Chapter Index

Pei Yisheng’s first order of business upon waking up was to bombard Su Yiyi until he was awake. After rousing him, Pei Yisheng hesitated for half an hour, nearly letting Su Yiyi fall back asleep, before awkwardly and quietly asking about Fang Xin’s situation.

He rarely gossiped, and his face was slightly flushed when he proactively asked about Fang Xin’s recent status.

Su Yiyi grinned, “Oh, come on, why are you being shy with me? Fang Xin, right? You’ve certainly asked the right person. The front page of the forum was flooded with posts about him a few days ago. You must have been too busy with work and studies to notice. If the posts hadn’t been mostly deleted, you wouldn’t even need to ask me.”

Pei Yisheng adopted an attentive posture.

Su Yiyi then recounted everything he knew.

“I don’t know how Fang Xin manages his social relationships, but since the semester started, hardly anyone has spoken up for him. Only one silly kid named Qi Min was completely taken in by him. They did group work and went to and from class together, but they had a falling out two days ago.”

Pei Yisheng remembered that name; it was the guy who bought takoyaki with Fang Xin at the snack street.

“The reason is simple: Fang Xin got mixed up with Song Wen.”

Su Yiyi sounded a little angry when he said this, because he had once advised Pei Yisheng to choose one of his roommates—rich, handsome, and gentle and caring towards him. Su Yiyi himself couldn’t refuse such an offer.

Moreover, he truly felt that Pei Yisheng was working too hard, juggling both academics and earning money. Song Wen and Wen Xiuyun could clearly help him solve these problems, or at least alleviate some of the pressure.

But as soon as he mentioned it, Pei Yisheng refused.

Looking back now, the refusal was probably for the best. People like them are heartless. No matter how well they pretended to be decent and pure in the beginning, didn’t Song Wen still find Fang Xin for a casual fling?

Pei Yisheng was already struggling enough. If he couldn’t even hold onto a relationship he could control, what hope would he have left in life?

He said with a look of disgust, “Everyone knows what Song Wen is like. I was kind enough to advise Fang Xin in the forum thread not to take it too seriously, but he went straight into a confrontation.

He claimed we misunderstood Song Wen, saying Song Wen was actually a wonderful person, implying that Song Wen treated him specially and that everyone else was just jealous of him.

“Seriously, who would be jealous of him? We’re laughing at him, more like.”

“Thinking about it still makes me angry. He used such manipulative, ‘tea-like’ language that I can’t even repeat it. His friend was blocked by Fang Xin just for advising him to think things through. Later, classmates from their department said that after the two had a huge fight in the classroom, Qi Min stopped dealing with him.”

Su Yiyi finished his account, huffing and puffing, rolling up his sleeves as if ready for a real-life brawl.

Pei Yisheng quickly comforted him, saying, “What if? The people involved are the ones who know the truth best. Maybe Song Wen really has changed his ways.”

Su Yiyi didn’t know the original plot and was unaware of Fang Xin’s appeal to these people. Pei Yisheng, however, felt that this was fine. How else could Fang Xin’s charm be proven if not by creating a sense of contrast? Song Wen was definitely going to turn over a new leaf.

This news was like timely rain, extinguishing the burning anxiety in Pei Yisheng’s heart. Song Wen’s reaction was similar to the original plot, which meant everything was still on the correct track.

Su Yiyi pouted, “Only you are kind enough to think that way. The forum is full of people predicting his downfall and waiting to see Fang Xin suffer.”

Initially, not many people were predicting his downfall, but Fang Xin’s replies had caused a backlash.

Pei Yisheng sighed, “Respect and blessings.”

The longer time passed, the more uncomfortable Pei Yisheng felt about the original plot. But he was just a small fry. Before the semester started, he couldn’t even speak or go out freely. Even his current level of freedom might disappear at any moment, so there was nothing he could really do.

Pei Yisheng returned to his dorm and stared blankly at the injury medicine that had arrived in the early morning.

He didn’t need to guess who sent it.

He checked the types of medicine—all for promoting blood circulation and reducing bruising. He looked at his fingers; only faint red marks remained. Even without the medicine, it didn’t matter; they would disappear in two or three days.

Pei Yisheng remained silent for a long time before typing Qin Zhou’s phone number into the WeChat search bar. When submitting the friend request, he sent a thank you message.

Whether Qin Zhou accepted or not, the thought was appreciated.

Pei Yisheng didn’t expect Qin Zhou to accept instantly. He fumbled and quickly expanded on the message he had just written.

Qin Zhou stared at the message, “It’s already better, thank you for the medicine,” for a moment. He moved his fingers twice, then put the phone aside and went back to sleep.

Pei Yisheng looked at the aloof reply and could almost picture Qin Zhou’s cold expression as he typed the single word, “En.”

He decided not to reply again and instead went to mail a package.

It was a bit far to go to Meng Zihua’s studio, and mailing it via local express delivery was simple and convenient. Keeping that set of women’s clothing felt like a landmine, making him constantly nervous.

He carried his lunch back to the dorm, where Wen Xiuyun was also present.

“Sheng Sheng,” Wen Xiuyun smiled gently, “Didn’t we say we’d have lunch together today? When you weren’t here, I thought you had forgotten.”

Wen Xiuyun stood gracefully, his eyes fixed on Pei Yisheng. That gaze was like an X-ray, constantly scanning Pei Yisheng, making him extremely uncomfortable.

In his memory, Wen Xiuyun was supposed to be the unhurried good guy, a shield when Song Wen crossed the line, and a good roommate who gave Pei Yisheng a small sense of security.

Pei Yisheng had always thought their pure relationship would last until the end of the original plot. Who knew that since Wen Xiuyun returned this time, he had completely changed, becoming unfamiliar to Pei Yisheng.

The fingers holding the plastic bag twitched slightly. He turned sideways, avoiding Wen Xiuyun’s intense gaze, and pretended to put things down, turning his back to Wen Xiuyun. But even so, he still felt like he had daggers in his back.

“I didn’t forget. I just happened to pass by and bought a little something. It’s not much, I can eat it all.”

Wen Xiuyun smiled at this, moving closer to Pei Yisheng, almost shoulder-to-shoulder. Pei Yisheng felt so close he could almost hear Wen Xiuyun’s heartbeat.

“Is that so? Then let’s eat together. Whatever Sheng Sheng buys must be delicious.”

Pei Yisheng felt numb all over, his hair standing on end. He turned around, feigning a stumble, and deliberately pushed Wen Xiuyun away slightly. “Sorry, I think I tripped over something.”

“It’s alright. Even if you fall, I’ll catch you.” Wen Xiuyun smiled, thoroughly enjoying Pei Yisheng’s expression, looking at him no differently than one would look at an anxious, helpless kitten.

Thinking he shouldn’t push the kitten too hard, Wen Xiuyun finally took a step back and walked over to the small dining table. “The food has been out for a while. Hurry up and eat, or your stomach will hurt if it gets cold.”

Pei Yisheng ate his meal like chewing wax. It wasn’t that the food was bad; it was Wen Xiuyun that made him feel like he was sitting on pins and needles.

He couldn’t continue like this. Pei Yisheng put down his utensils. “Um, starting tomorrow, I won’t be able to eat with you anymore. Thank you for your hospitality recently.”

“What kind of inconvenience? Can I help you?” Wen Xiuyun seemed to ignore the underlying meaning, asking naturally.

Pei Yisheng had prepared an excuse. “I’m going to work part-time off-campus.”

“I see. Then let’s eat together in the evening.”

“Time is tight and the tasks are demanding. After work, I need to go to the Library. I’ll just grab something quick on the way.”

Wen Xiuyun disapproved, saying, “You’ll wear yourself out if you do that.”

Pei Yisheng muttered internally, If I keep eating with you, my body will really wear out.

He was determined to keep his distance from Wen Xiuyun. No matter what was said, he avoided any mention of “doing something together.” After being rejected multiple times, Wen Xiuyun’s face finally cooled.

The atmosphere became stagnant. Pei Yisheng silently cleaned up the table. When he returned after throwing away the trash, Wen Xiuyun was no longer in the dorm.

Pei Yisheng breathed a sigh of relief.

He wasn’t exactly making up excuses. Since the work with the senior sister got on track, riding the wave of traffic, he really did get a lot more work, and his wallet had fattened up.

He had just looked through nearby housing information and found several short-term rentals he liked. He planned to find time to check them out with Su Yiyi. Once the final exams were over, he could move out.

During the break that day, the class monitor stood on the podium to announce some news.

The school traditionally held a New Year’s Eve Gala every year, and this year was no different. The department was required to produce two major performances. Since everyone was in a science and engineering field and lacked artistic flair, the department decided to collaborate directly with the College of Arts to ensure the event was spectacular.

“One performance has been decided: a cross-dressing drama with original script. Participating students will receive ten GPA points. Those interested should sign up with me. Auditions will be held this weekend.”

    “That’s excessive!”

“They’re really pulling out all the stops.”

“For the sake of our eyes, Sheng Sheng, please sign up!”

“Exactly, I don’t want to see big, burly guys wearing skirts.”

Pei Yisheng’s entire focus was on those ten GPA points. Good heavens, he only earned a few points over a grueling half-semester for finals. To offer ten points all at once—even if he didn’t use them to apply for off-campus housing, he could strive for a scholarship.

Many people had the same idea as him, but after learning that the ten points could not be counted toward scholarship calculations, a large crowd backed out.

Fortunately, the department had many students, so gathering enough people from various classes meant the auditions wouldn’t look too bad.

Pei Yisheng, living up to expectations, signed up. To escape the dorm, cross-dressing was a price he was willing to pay!

Su Yiyi also heard the news. He was so afraid Pei Yisheng wouldn’t sign up that he had prepared a whole speech to persuade him, but it turned out to be unnecessary.

“Brother, you are truly reliable. You step up when needed.”

Pei Yisheng’s eyes curved into crescents. “With these ten GPA points, moving out will be a sure thing.”

    “Great! Let’s work hard!”

The auditions were quite simple. Good-looking people like Pei Yisheng were the most popular; his cross-dressing was flawless. For the sake of the script’s comedic effect, a few very enthusiastic, muscular male students were also kept.

During the break of the first rehearsal, a line of small food carts was pushed in through the side door of the auditorium. Just as everyone was surprised by the department’s generosity, Song Wen followed them in.

“Sheng Sheng, I heard your rehearsal was tough, so I specially ordered milk tea and small cakes for everyone. Don’t be shy, help yourselves. Everyone gets a share.”

Song Wen’s arrival was high-profile, and his intimacy with Pei Yisheng seemed genuine, causing people to immediately gather and whisper.

“What is Song Wen trying to do?”

“Isn’t he all over that other guy? I saw them together just a few days ago.”

“I actually thought Song Wen had changed his ways and settled down. Tsk tsk, turns out he just hadn’t met the next one.”

“But I heard Pei Yisheng is his roommate. Maybe their relationship isn’t what we think.”

Pei Yisheng was also wondering, what was Song Wen up to? What kind of relationship did they have that warranted this display?
