    Chapter 5

Song Wen’s little actions were completely unconcealed; he simply wanted to see Pei Yisheng’s reaction. He tilted his head back, looking relaxed and at ease. The playboy demeanor didn’t seem out of place on him, and his peach blossom eyes held a clear smile.

Pei Yisheng felt helpless. The knuckles gripping the spoon turned white with awkwardness. He pursed his lips and said stiffly, “It’s right under your eye.”

“Which eye?” Song Wen asked, tilting his head.

Pei Yisheng thought: You wiped it yourself, how could you not know?

He pointed to his own face, “Here.”

“Sheng Sheng, am I some kind of monster? Why are you unwilling to wipe it for me? I really can’t see it.”

Song Wen raised the hand still smeared with cream and reluctantly wiped the spot Pei Yisheng had pointed to. After wiping, he opened his eyes wide, as if just realizing his hand was dirty. “Oops, I forgot I still had cream on my hand.”

Pei Yisheng sighed internally. Since he was putting on such a show, Pei Yisheng couldn’t pretend not to notice. He pulled out a wet wipe and roughly and simply wiped Song Wen’s face clean.

Perhaps it was too rough, as Song Wen’s face was rubbed red.

Pei Yisheng muttered quietly in his heart, Serves you right.

Song Wen didn’t care about these details. When trying to woo someone, there were bound to be times when things went sideways. Now Pei Yisheng could play hard to get, but once he had Pei Yisheng, there would be plenty of time for the other person to cry.

Besides, Pei Yisheng’s reaction only proved that he was completely clueless, a blank slate. Song Wen loved the feeling of being able to paint on him however he wished. One day, he would ensure Pei Yisheng was covered in his brand.

After eating the cake, Song Wen finally quieted down. Pei Yisheng washed up and went to bed. Song Wen seemed unaccustomed to sleeping early; he tossed and turned in bed. In his drowsy state, Pei Yisheng heard him talking on the phone across the room.

The soft, fragmented sounds were quite hypnotic.

When Pei Yisheng woke up in the morning, Song Wen was still asleep. Pei Yisheng quietly got ready and quickly slipped out.

He felt that too much contact with Song Wen would affect his brain.

This was a rare morning when Pei Yisheng didn’t have class. He leisurely ate breakfast, then walked around the school lake, planning to head to the study room to read after digesting his meal.

He didn’t expect that, by sheer coincidence, he would see Fang Xin by the lake.

He couldn’t help but look around, worried that the Protagonist Gongs might jump out of some corner and have a loving rendezvous with Fang Xin.

Fortunately, the lakeside was cool, and apart from Fang Xin and some students jogging, none of the key figures Pei Yisheng was concerned about were present.

Still, he was cautious and planned to turn back at the upcoming corner. The study room offered him a sense of security.

Pei Yisheng unconsciously quickened his pace, his heart pounding intensely.

When he was about five meters away, Fang Xin suddenly cried out in pain and tumbled to the ground.

Pei Yisheng instinctively looked over, meeting Wen Xiuyun’s puzzled gaze.

Wen Xiuyun wasn’t puzzled by Pei Yisheng; he was confused about how he had managed to bump into a walking student while jogging normally.

Wiping the sweat from his brow with a towel, Wen Xiuyun stood straight, looking at the boy in front of him who seemed to have been knocked three feet away. Hearing the other person still groaning in pain, Wen Xiuyun found it grating.

He called out to Pei Yisheng, who was trying to sneak away, “Yisheng, help me check on this student. If he needs to go to the School Clinic later, it might be inconvenient for me alone.”

Pei Yisheng pointed to himself. Me?

Please, I just want to be a good passerby. Don’t drag me into your dramatic affairs!

Pei Yisheng shuffled over reluctantly. “I’m sorry, I might not be able to help. I still have homework to finish, and it’s due this afternoon.”

Wen Xiuyun smiled calmly. “You and I are in the same major. Which teacher’s class, what assignment? I’ll help you write it. It’s fine.”

Pei Yisheng gave a dry laugh. He didn’t have any assignments; if he did, they would have been finished long ago. Seeing that he couldn’t refuse, he quickly changed the subject. He looked at Fang Xin, who was still sitting on the ground clutching his arm, and squatted down to express concern. “Student, are you okay? Where are you hurt? We should take you to the School Hospital to get checked out.”

Fang Xin didn’t find Pei Yisheng friendly; he just felt he was being insensitive!

He had been knocked down by a runner and was lying on the ground. Of course, he hurt everywhere, especially his arm and his palm, which were scraped. It was a large area, and he didn’t know when it would heal. Did Pei Yisheng think those two light sentences could soothe his anger? Impossible!

He angrily looked up at the perpetrator, and was instantly stunned by the perpetrator’s face.

Wen Xiuyun’s handsomeness was different from Qin Zhou’s. He was gentle and soft, like a wisp of fresh air. As he looked down at Fang Xin with concern, Fang Xin’s heart fluttered wildly.

He stammered, “N-nothing major. Just my elbow hit the ground. It hurts a lot.”

After speaking, Fang Xin struggled to stand up. Pei Yisheng tried to help him, but somehow lost his own balance and nearly fell backward onto his butt. He desperately tried to maintain balance with both hands, but just before he reached Fang Xin, the other boy cleverly dodged him.

Wen Xiuyun saw everything clearly. He narrowed his eyes slightly, took a step forward, and positioned himself exactly where Pei Yisheng was about to fall. He firmly supported Pei Yisheng, allowing him to slowly sit down on his foot.

Pei Yisheng leaned against Wen Xiuyun’s leg.

Pei Yisheng let out a sound of surprise, then looked up, his eyes sparkling, revealing a flash of white teeth. “Thank you!”

“You’re welcome. We can’t have one injured person turn into two; that would truly be my fault,” Wen Xiuyun smiled gently. When he looked up at Fang Xin beside him, he was still smiling, but the warmth was gone.

“Student, let’s go. I’ll take you to the hospital to get checked out.”

Pei Yisheng also stood up. “I feel like I’d just be getting in the way if I went. I’ll stay here.”

Wen Xiuyun didn’t insist this time, but his car was parked further ahead, and it would take a moment to drive it over. “Then please wait here with the student for a moment. I’ll go get the car.”

Fang Xin suddenly whispered, “My name is Fang Xin.”

“Student Fang Xin, please wait patiently,” Wen Xiuyun replied smoothly.

Pei Yisheng thought waiting wasn’t difficult, so he agreed.

When it was just him and Fang Xin, the atmosphere was strangely dry. Pei Yisheng didn’t know what to say to the Protagonist Shou, worried he might accidentally affect the subsequent plot, so he pulled out his phone and started scrolling.

Fang Xin looked at Pei Yisheng, regretting that he had dodged earlier. If he hadn’t moved, that boy wouldn’t have helped the person in front of him.

He stared at Pei Yisheng: fair skin, large eyes, thin and beautifully shaped eyelids, a handsome nose and mouth. He was also taller than Fang Xin. Although he was only wearing ordinary clothes, his demeanor was still striking.

And he seemed very familiar with the person who had just left.

Fang Xin suddenly felt the urge to speak. “Student, my name is Fang Xin, from the College of Arts. I apologize, I didn’t react quickly enough just now and almost caused you to get hurt.”

Pei Yisheng put away his phone as soon as Fang Xin started talking. Hearing the apology, he waved his hand. “It’s nothing serious, and I wasn’t hurt. You don’t need to worry about it. My name is Pei Yisheng, and I study Finance.”

“Was that boy just now your senior? I heard him say he could help you…” Fang Xin had an expression that suggested he had stumbled upon a secret, hesitating to speak further.

Pei Yisheng felt a little uncomfortable hearing this. If Su Yiyi were here, she would immediately point out that Fang Xin was clearly acting like a delicate, green tea white lotus.

However, the relationship wasn’t entirely wrong; Wen Xiuyun being his senior was better than other possibilities. He smiled and explained, “Yes, but we were just joking. The teacher’s assignments are quite simple; it’s not time to ask for outside help yet.”

Fang Xin felt a little disappointed. It wasn’t a weakness he could exploit? He wanted to ask something else, but Wen Xiuyun had already driven over.

He was low-key, and his car was also low-key. At least, Fang Xin could only tell that Wen Xiuyun was driving a Volkswagen, unaware that he was driving the ancestor of Volkswagens.

Fang Xin felt a subtle sense of disappointment, but he quickly cheered up and started chatting with Wen Xiuyun after getting into the car.

Wen Xiuyun, however, was only concerned with one question: how exactly did he bump into Fang Xin? Unfortunately, Fang Xin himself wasn’t clear, so Wen Xiuyun could only attribute it to an accident.

Pei Yisheng had arranged to have lunch with Su Yiyi. As soon as he sat down, he heard the excitement hidden in her voice. “Sheng Sheng, you have an absolutely stunning photo of your life!”

Pei Yisheng was confused. Su Yiyi wasn’t one to keep secrets; she sent the photo to Pei Yisheng while chattering away.

“I was browsing the forum, and there was a highly-ranked post, so I clicked in, and then I found this!”

The photo had already loaded on Pei Yisheng’s phone. It was a picture of him sitting on Wen Xiuyun’s foot, leaning against his leg, and looking up.

Although the distance was far, the phone camera had high resolution. Anyone who knew him could tell it was him. He was now extremely grateful that in this beautiful, filtered picture, only his chin and nose bridge were clearly visible.

“Who exactly is this Fang Xin? How can he casually run into Qin Zhou and Wen Xiuyun and generate all these interactions?”

Although Su Yiyi was puzzled, she strongly supported her friend. “But Sheng Sheng, don’t worry, he can’t beat you. The post is saying he’s trying to catch a swan.”

Pei Yisheng gave a dry laugh. “You have to have dreams, just in case.”

He hoped Fang Xin would step up and quickly spark some romance with the Protagonist Gongs. He genuinely felt things were getting a little dangerous now!

Fortunately, nothing strange happened until the weekend. Pei Yisheng breathed a sigh of relief, packed his small backpack, and headed to the coast for his stand-in modeling job.

This job had been introduced by a senior from high school. Initially, she just wanted him to model for her personally, but after learning he needed money, she recommended him for stand-in work, mostly photographing his back or arms. Aside from being a bit tough in specific settings, the money was relatively easy to earn.

Pei Yisheng cherished the job and maintained a positive work attitude.

A sun umbrella was set up on the beach. The senior and several staff members were discussing makeup. When he arrived, they handed him the costume.

It was a thick, court-style outfit. Pei Yisheng immediately started putting it on without a word.

Following instructions, he posed until sunset. Pei Yisheng’s clothes had been soaked and dried several times, but seeing the payment credited to his account, he flashed a happy smile.

“Sheng Sheng, are you really not considering becoming a celebrity? You are genuinely photogenic.”

Pei Yisheng shook his head. “I wouldn’t know how, and I’m not used to facing the camera directly.”

The senior sighed regretfully. “Alright, I respect your decision.”

Pei Yisheng carried his bag back to school. The bus stopped not far from the entrance to the snack street outside the school gate. Smelling the wafting aromas, Pei Yisheng’s steps involuntarily turned that way. While waiting for his guokui, he saw Fang Xin walking past, laughing and chatting with a tall guy.
