    Chapter 6: Leaving with Nothing

    Chapter 6

    Divorce?

Gu Minghe thought he had misheard. He looked quietly at Pei Huaixue, his expression unchanged, yet the hands clamped around Pei Huaixue’s slender waist suddenly tightened, locking the person in his arms securely within the hard cage he had woven.

    “Are you angry?”

Pei Huaixue didn’t answer him, only continued to cry relentlessly.

Hot tears fell onto Gu Minghe’s chest, penetrating the thin fabric and seeping into his skin. His heart felt as if it had been branded by Pei Huaixue’s tears.

“I was wrong, I apologize to you, I shouldn’t have joked around,” Gu Minghe coaxed softly. “Or did the car accident scare you? I promise there won’t be a next time.”

The words “car accident” struck Pei Huaixue’s ears like a curse, instantly changing his expression.

He no longer hesitated, repeating his demand to Gu Minghe, word for word: “I want a divorce.”

His gaze was serious, without any hint of jest.

The taut string in Gu Minghe’s mind snapped instantly.

His dark eyes became unfathomable. He stared unblinkingly at Pei Huaixue, as if confirming this wasn’t a joke. “Why divorce when everything is fine?”

“No reason, I just want a divorce.”

Pei Huaixue didn’t want to lie with excuses like “I don’t love you anymore.” He couldn’t say it, so he could only act like a willful, crying child—not explaining why he was crying or throwing a tantrum, only stating the result he wanted.

Gu Minghe, however, heard a different meaning in his words.

“Is it because of Gu Yanchen? You still can’t forget him, can you?” His tone was calm, as if he had long anticipated this day.

“It’s not because of Big Brother…” Pei Huaixue protested, but his pale complexion made his defense sound weak.

A faint smile touched Gu Minghe’s lips. His large hand slowly traced up Pei Huaixue’s spine. His voice held no fluctuation, yet it sounded terrifying.

“Divorce is impossible, not in this lifetime.”

He couldn’t let go of Pei Huaixue, couldn’t stand by and watch the person he loved be with someone else.

He remembered many years ago, when Pei Huaixue had flushed red and told him he had fallen in love with Gu Yanchen.

That day, Gu Minghe learned for the first time what it felt like to be abandoned.

He had always been heaven’s favorite, easily obtaining whatever he desired, his life smooth sailing—but he had stumbled badly with Pei Huaixue.

He was already Pei Huaixue’s dog, so why did his owner no longer want him?

Tonight, as Pei Huaixue demanded to abandon him again, Gu Minghe’s eyes revealed obvious heartbreak.

He hugged Pei Huaixue tightly, resting his head in the crook of the other man’s shoulder and rubbing against him. He pleaded in a low, humble voice: “Wife, don’t leave me.”

Pei Huaixue cried even harder. Buried against his chest, his entire body was flushed an alluring pink from crying, trembling incessantly. Exhausted from weeping, he eventually fell asleep right there, pressing against Gu Minghe.

Gu Minghe gently stroked his back, over and over, his heart filled with bitterness.

He cried this much just because he disagreed to the divorce.

Did he really like Gu Yanchen that much?

The next day, after Pei Huaixue woke up, he still insisted on divorce.

Whether Gu Minghe agreed or not, his mind was made up.

However, no matter what Pei Huaixue said, Gu Minghe either changed the subject or pretended not to hear, consistently refusing to yield.

Pei Huaixue calmed down. While feeding Gu Minghe, he mechanically repeated his demand for divorce.

Gu Minghe interrupted him: “Baby, you haven’t had lunch yet, have you? I saw you didn’t eat breakfast either. Are you hungry? Let me feed you.”

Compared to being taken care of by Pei Huaixue, he was still more accustomed to taking care of Pei Huaixue.

If his legs weren’t inconvenient, he would have long ago pinned the man to the bed and kissed him fiercely, making him unable to utter the word “divorce” again.

“I’m not hungry.” Pei Huaixue said coldly, “If you don’t agree to the divorce, I won’t eat.”

After his words fell, the hospital room was silent for a second.

“Then I won’t eat either.” Gu Minghe stopped eating.

Pei Huaixue looked at him, the hand holding the spoon trembling slightly.

    “Fine.”

He didn’t argue with him, simply collecting the bowl and utensils.

The two of them were stubborn, just like when they were children, neither willing to back down first.

Although Gu Minghe was injured, his physical constitution was many times better than Pei Huaixue’s. Skipping a meal wouldn’t affect him much, but Pei Huaixue couldn’t handle it.

He hadn’t eaten breakfast, and now he was skipping lunch. His stomach was already empty, and the hunger was becoming painful.

He sat by the hospital bed, initially sitting upright, but slowly his hand went to cover his stomach, his back hunching over. Fine beads of sweat broke out on his forehead, and his lips turned pale.

In an instant, a large hand pulled him into an embrace. Gu Minghe quickly held his trembling body, his warm palm slipping under the hem of his clothes, gently rubbing his delicate skin inch by inch.

“Does your stomach hurt? Let me rub it for you.”

Before long, his snow-white abdomen was stained with a light pink flush. Pei Huaixue rested his face on Gu Minghe’s shoulder, biting his lip, trying hard not to make any strange sounds.

“I told you not to skip meals. Why are you playing games with me? You’re only hurting yourself.” Gu Minghe sighed, feeling both heartache and helplessness.

He continued to urge Pei Huaixue to eat, but when Pei Huaixue was stubborn, no one could persuade him.

He would rather starve himself. As long as Gu Minghe didn’t agree, he wouldn’t eat.

Seeing Pei Huaixue willing to threaten him with his own body just to get a divorce, Gu Minghe felt a chill in his heart.

“Pei Huaixue, do you have to treat me this way?”

“Are you taking advantage of my love for you to abuse yourself like this?”

“You clearly know I can’t bear to watch you hurt yourself.”

    “Pei Huaixue, you win.”

Gu Minghe released his hold on Pei Huaixue. He looked quietly at the person he loved, his deep eyes revealing incredibly complex emotions. He felt like he should hate him, but facing Pei Huaixue, he couldn’t muster any hatred.

Pei Huaixue, however, dared not meet his eyes.

He avoided his gaze, looking down at the floor, like a pearl shrinking inside its shell, afraid to face the sadness and disappointment in Gu Minghe’s eyes.

I’m sorry. When all this is over, I will give you a proper explanation.

Pei Huaixue thought with a sense of loss.

The consensus for divorce was thus reached. The next day, Pei Huaixue called a lawyer to draft the divorce agreement.

“Are you in such a hurry to divorce?”

Gu Minghe’s face was ashen, his chest aching intensely.

Pei Huaixue swayed under his questioning, looking as if he might faint. Gu Minghe finally took pity on him and let him off the hook.

He didn’t want to see Pei Huaixue hurt himself again over the divorce. Gu Minghe calmed himself down, took the agreement, and read it carefully, then said, “I will leave with nothing.”

He requested that all his properties, funds, and companies, including Xingyue Agency, be given entirely to Pei Huaixue.

Pei Huaixue’s eyes widened instantly. He clenched his fists tightly and refused, “I don’t want it!”

He was the one insisting on the divorce. Gu Minghe hadn’t done anything wrong, so why should he leave with nothing?!

“Pei Huaixue, this is my condition for agreeing to the divorce. If you don’t agree, there’s no need to discuss the divorce.”

This was the biggest concession Gu Minghe could make.

If he lost money, he could earn it back.

Not to mention, he had the massive Gu Family supporting him. The annual dividends alone from the Gu Corporation were enough for him to spend lavishly.

    But Pei Huaixue was different.

Pei Huaixue had been raised delicately by him, requiring the best in food, clothing, and daily necessities. If he left him, would Pei Huaixue go hungry? Would he be bullied? Would he be unable to afford a handbag he liked? Just imagining it caused Gu Minghe unbearable heartache.

Pei Huaixue bit his lip. He knew Gu Minghe’s good intentions.

Everything he currently possessed was given by Gu Minghe, including the daily life he curated on his influencer account, which was supported by Gu Minghe’s wealth.

Without Gu Minghe, he would just be the son of a servant; he would revert to his original state.

Perhaps this was why the novel portrayed him as the Vicious Cannon Fodder.

The original book’s version of him was vain and jealous, envious of Su Jin, who had grown up with a halo since childhood, due to his poor background.

He viciously wanted to seize everything related to Su Jin.

That’s why he fell for Gu Yanchen. He viewed Gu Yanchen as his trophy; by obtaining Gu Yanchen, he could gain the whole world.

However, the real-life him hadn’t grown up according to the original novel’s trajectory.

He had Gu Minghe by his side. Gu Minghe loved him deeply, holding him in his palm, spoiling him from childhood, allowing him to grow up surrounded by love. Therefore, he wasn’t vain or jealous. He had the best Gu Minghe in the world, so how could he possibly envy others? How could he want to steal someone else’s love?

Pei Huaixue couldn’t connect the fragmented person in the book with himself.

Yet, reality was forcing him to become that Pei Huaixue.

Thinking of this, he felt so wronged he wanted to cry.

“I don’t want your money! Gu Minghe, you are always like this, doing everything under the guise of ‘it’s for my own good,’ arranging everything for me. But have you ever considered whether I need it, or what I truly want? Can’t you stop being so overbearing?” Pei Huaixue shouted desperately.

He vented the grievance, anger, fear, and anxiety in his heart. He knew he shouldn’t act this way, but besides Gu Minghe, he didn’t know who else he could lash out at.

Only Gu Minghe would tolerate him unconditionally, which was why he acted without restraint.

Gu Minghe was stunned by his outburst.

Pei Huaixue rarely lost his temper so completely. His little cat was always gentle, obedient, delicate, and adorable. But even an angry Pei Huaixue, he still liked.

And he felt deeply sorry for him.

The lawyer, seeing their argument, awkwardly suggested, “Perhaps you two should communicate further?”

“No need.” Pei Huaixue wiped away his tears. “I don’t agree to Gu Minghe leaving with nothing, but I still insist on this divorce. Gu Minghe, this is a notice, not a negotiation. Sign it quickly.”

Gu Minghe’s hand, gripping the pen, tightened forcefully.

After a long moment, he finally spoke: “Fine.”

If this is what you truly want, I agree.

“Xiaoxue, is this truly what you want?”

He signed his name on the paper. “You said I don’t understand what you truly want. I will change. Please don’t hate me.”

Pei Huaixue, eyes red, followed suit, writing his name stroke by stroke.

Tears fell onto the paper, blurring the ink. His vision was hazy, large tears filling his eyes until they could hold no more. A hand gently wiped the tears away for him.

“Don’t cry. I’ve already agreed to the divorce, so why are you still crying?”
