Chapter 8: Cannot Get Close to Gu Minghe

    Chapter 8

Pei Huaixue rubbed his eyes, slightly surprised. “I haven’t even applied yet. How did I get an invitation?”

    029 said proudly:

Host, this System was afraid you might forget, so I already sent your information to the production team in advance.

    Pei Huaixue: …

    Thank you so much.

Pei Huaixue currently had surging popularity, and since the production team had already confirmed that Su Jin and Gu Yanchen would participate, adding Pei Huaixue would guarantee an explosion of buzz. How could the production team miss such a golden opportunity to go viral?

So, upon seeing the information Pei Huaixue submitted, they immediately contacted him without hesitation.

Pei Huaixue called the staff member back, confirming his participation. The staff member enthusiastically asked him to come sign the contract tomorrow.

After hanging up, Pei Huaixue felt groggy from sleep. The fever reducer had some effect, but not much. He took his temperature; it was still a low-grade fever. Feeling a bit hungry, Pei Huaixue got up to cook something for himself.

His cooking skills were terrible; even when he wasn’t sick, his food was often inedible.

In the past, either Gu Minghe cooked for him, or the housekeeper came over at the appointed time. Now, he had to manage on his own.

Pei Huaixue didn’t have much appetite while sick. After thinking it over, he decided to just cook some plain white congee.

He clumsily took out the clay pot and started boiling the congee. About half an hour later, the steaming hot congee was ready, but he accidentally scalded his fingers while pouring it out.

His five fair, delicate fingers instantly turned bright red. Pei Huaixue rushed to run them under cold water, but accidentally bumped into a chair, bruising his knee red.

He sat on the floor, hugging his leg, pitifully blowing on his fingers. He didn’t know whether to feel sorry for his leg or his hand first.

His eyes were misty with heat. He blinked, his curled eyelashes trembling slightly, looking like he was about to cry.

    Wuwu, he missed his Husband.

Pei Huaixue felt that leaving Gu Minghe was like a fish leaving water or a cat leaving its litter-scooper—he would eventually starve himself to death.

The next day, Pei Huaixue arrived at the Greenery Restaurant at the agreed time to sign the contract.

He was wearing a pink and white cashmere sweater and light blue jeans. Fearing the cold, he brought an extra jacket. Since he hadn’t recovered from his illness, he consciously wore a mask, only revealing a pair of captivating peach blossom eyes, framed by thick, fluttering eyelashes.

Even with only half his face visible, it was clear he possessed outstanding looks, making people wonder how stunning the face hidden beneath the mask must be.

Seeing Pei Huaixue arrive, the staff member responsible for the contract immediately stood up to greet him.

She had seen many online comments calling him a vain, plastic-surgery-enhanced minor influencer who was overly dramatic and looked terrible in person. But seeing him today, the staff member realized how biased the online comments were.

Pei Huaixue was tall, definitely over six feet. His figure was particularly slender and delicate, so thin he looked slightly frail, yet it didn’t look unhealthy—it was just right.

His skin was snow-white and translucent, with a hint of pink, like a delicate porcelain doll.

His eyes were clear and bright, devoid of any fawning or flattering look. However, the slight redness at the corner of his eyes was tantalizing. If one were stared at by such eyes for long, their heart would pound like a startled deer.

Xiao Shu gasped internally. What a beauty! Who said Pei Huaixue had plastic surgery? This was clearly a natural face!

And his Douyin videos didn’t even use filters, okay? He looked exactly like he did in the videos, and even better in person!

“Sorry, I have a cold. Do you mind the mask?” Pei Huaixue sat across from her, full of apology.

Xiao Shu quickly waved her hand, smiling foolishly. “Not at all, not at all.”

His voice was so pleasant, too.

    So gentle and magnetic.

His personality seemed very nice as well.

Xiao Shu instantly developed a good impression of Pei Huaixue.

As a casting director, she had met all sorts of people, both established artists and ordinary people—the arrogant, the indifferent, the introverted, the insecure. None of them made her feel as comfortable to interact with as Pei Huaixue.

Thinking of the online slander, Xiao Shu felt that perhaps Pei Huaixue was not the person the internet claimed him to be.

After signing the contract, they had a meal together. When the time seemed right, Pei Huaixue stood up and left with Xiao Shu.

Walking to the parking area in front of the restaurant, Pei Huaixue was about to get into his car when he saw a familiar figure emerge from the restaurant not far away.

Gu Minghe was dressed entirely in black, looking very low-key. He wore a black mask and a bucket hat, thoroughly concealing himself.

His manager, Cheng Chen, was beside him, turned sideways, seemingly talking to him.

Gu Minghe’s expression was stern; when he wasn’t smiling, his brow was furrowed, making him look quite intimidating.

Pei Huaixue hadn’t seen Gu Minghe in a month. Suddenly running into him here made his heart leap.

His feet felt nailed to the spot, unable to move.

Xiao Shu looked at him strangely. “What’s wrong?”

Just as she was about to follow his gaze, Pei Huaixue quickly retracted his sight and subtly blocked Xiao Shu. “Nothing, I just suddenly saw an acquaintance.”

“Do you want to go say hello?”

    Say hello?

    Pei Huaixue froze.

    Could he go?

    In what capacity?

Gu Minghe must hate him by now, having been abandoned so abruptly.

But Gu Minghe had always spoiled him the most. A month had passed; surely he had forgiven him by now.

Pei Huaixue hesitated, wondering whether he should go greet him.

His feet unconsciously shuffled a step toward Gu Minghe.

Just then, a startled cry rang out nearby, followed by the sound of a heavy object crashing to the ground.

Gu Minghe was pulled back by Cheng Chen. A vase, dropped from a height, had shattered right in front of him.

It was broken into pieces, scattering soil everywhere.

Cheng Chen’s face instantly turned ashen.

If they had been a second slower, the vase would have hit Gu Minghe’s head—the consequences were unimaginable.

He said with lingering fear, “Minghe, maybe you should go pray somewhere. I feel like you’ve been having bad luck lately.”

First, he encountered a car accident while working on a set. To avoid delaying the production, he had to resign—that was a massive project under a major director, highly anticipated before filming even began. Because of the accident, he couldn’t continue, and the role went to someone else.

Now, he had finally recovered from his leg injury and returned to Lancheng. On his very first day back, he went out for a meal with industry contacts and nearly got hit by a falling vase.

    Too unlucky.

The entertainment industry valued fortune and metaphysics. Cheng Chen was already planning when he could take time off to go pray.

Gu Minghe gave him a cold glance, raised his hand to pull his mask higher, and said in a muffled voice, “Let’s go. People are looking.”

The surrounding passersby were drawn by the sudden incident and looked toward Gu Minghe. Fortunately, it was dark, and people couldn’t see clearly. Gu Minghe quickly got back into his car, avoiding being recognized.

The car gradually drove away. Pei Huaixue stood frozen, Cheng Chen’s words echoing in his mind.

He said Gu Minghe had been having bad luck lately.

“029, was Gu Minghe’s accident because of me?” He called out to 029.

    029 confirmed his suspicion.

Host, it is best not to get too close to Gu Minghe right now. If you are too near him, the World Consciousness will detect Gu Minghe’s existence and bring disaster upon him. Maintaining a certain distance is better for both of you.

Pei Huaixue fell silent, his face instantly drooping.

Xiao Shu was startled by the sound of the falling vase. She patted her chest, recovering her composure, and saw Pei Huaixue still spacing out. She asked, “Mr. Pei, are you alright? That was so dangerous; it completely rattled me.”

Pei Huaixue managed a smile. “I’m fine, Miss Shu. I’ll be going now.”

With that, he opened the car door and got in.

But the moment he turned away, his eyes turned red, and his demeanor became increasingly fragile, as if he had been bullied, making him look heartbreakingly vulnerable.

Xiao Shu felt a pang of inexplicable distress in her own heart.

As soon as Pei Huaixue returned home, he shut himself in his room. He was already sick, and now his face was flushed with fever again. 029 reminded him to take his medicine, but Pei Huaixue acted like he was throwing a tantrum, wrapping himself in his blanket and refusing to take the pills.

His mood had been terrible ever since he left the restaurant.

He didn’t take medicine or see a doctor, just lay in bed enduring it, letting himself drift in a feverish haze. He lay there muddle-headed for three days, only drinking a little congee or eating snacks to fill his stomach. He completely neglected his body, deliberately mistreating and punishing himself.

Host, you cannot give up on yourself.

029 couldn’t stand it anymore and wanted to intervene.

But Pei Huaixue stubbornly covered his ears, refusing to listen.

After three consecutive days of low fever, although his mind wasn’t damaged, his spirit was listless. He lay there pale and dispirited, the weight he had managed to gain thanks to Gu Minghe was now completely gone.

He stared blankly at the ceiling, feeling an unprecedented sense of depression.

Just then, his phone rang beside the bed.

    Someone was calling him.

Pei Huaixue reached out and pressed the answer button without looking at the caller ID. He said in a hoarse voice, “I don’t need insurance, I don’t need a mobile plan upgrade, I won’t leave a good review, I don’t need a prize draw feedback…”

    “Pei Huaixue.”

The moment the voice on the other end spoke, Pei Huaixue fell silent.

Gu Minghe. Why was he contacting him?

Pei Huaixue felt like a child who had done something wrong and instinctively wanted to hang up. However, Gu Minghe had anticipated his move and said in a deep voice, “Don’t hang up.”

Pei Huaixue obediently withdrew his hand. He kept his mouth shut, not speaking, just breathing quietly.

Because of his illness, his breathing was heavy.

Gu Minghe asked him, “Are you sick?”

    “No…” Pei Huaixue lied.

Gu Minghe was not fooled at all.

“Your voice is so hoarse, and your breathing sounds wrong. Don’t tell me you’re fine.” Gu Minghe was silent for a moment. “Where are you staying now? I’ll come see you.”

“No need! Don’t come see me! I really am fine!” When Pei Huaixue heard Gu Minghe wanted to visit, he was so scared that he immediately hung up after speaking.

He absolutely did not want Gu Minghe to get into trouble again.

After hanging up, fearing Gu Minghe would call back, he turned off his phone directly.

Pei Huaixue thought that way Gu Minghe wouldn’t be able to find him.

He lay in bed, his consciousness drifting into a hazy sleep again. When he woke up, he was startled by a violent pounding on the door.

    “Pei Huaixue, open the door!”
