Chapter Index

Kong Xunwen, Xunwen, Awen, Little Xun…

Qiu Zhijie noticed something was off, but it seemed to be a good thing, as Kong Xunwen’s attitude toward him had recently become very good.

Over the past few days, every tentative step he took to push the boundaries seemed to be met with tolerance. It was as if anything he did would be forgiven and agreed to.

However, a certain premonition in his heart kept him from saying that confession again.

Perhaps he needed a more significant location; he needed to treat this confession with greater seriousness.

Qiu Zhijie thought this as his hand skillfully dialed the video call number saved with two hearts.

This was already the fifth day they had been apart.

After a moment, Qiu Zhijie waited patiently. He had woken up earlier today. Although he had already washed up and changed his clothes, he wasn’t sitting at the dining table.

He had only realized this yesterday: sometimes when he habitually called Kong Xunwen, Steward Zhu would be nearby.

Driven by a certain feeling, he didn’t want anyone to see how he interacted with Kong Xunwen, even if it was through a screen, and even if that person was Steward Zhu, who had practically watched him grow up.

The video connected. The opposite side was still dark. The light from the phone screen flashed across the young man’s face for just a moment before the screen quickly returned to darkness.

Qiu Zhijie got up and drew the curtains. He had thought it would be better not to turn on the lights, but it was still too bright. Although he knew the phone was the main source of light and his actions wouldn’t make much difference, he still made the room darker.

    However.

Qiu Zhijie recalled the fleeting image he had just seen on the screen. The young man was clearly still asleep before answering the call, so when the call connected, the phone’s light stung his eyes. His eyes were tightly shut, and his brows were furrowed.

His cheeks were flushed with the warmth of sleep, and his hair was loosely scattered around him.

    Very beautiful, very cute.

Fortunately, Qiu Zhijie looked at the small red dot indicating screen recording flashing in the upper right corner of the video. He always recorded their calls; he could just clip the footage later.

Lowering his voice, Qiu Zhijie called the young man’s name: “Kong Xunwen, Xunwen, Awen, Little Xun…”

“Stop calling…” Kong Xunwen’s muffled voice came through. Because he had just been sleeping, he sounded weak and soft, which sounded like he was whining—

Or at least, that’s how Qiu Zhijie perceived it.

Qiu Zhijie ground his teeth against the inside of his lip and raised a hand to loosen his collar, his gaze unwilling to leave the screen, even though it was completely dark.

His heart felt a little itchy.

Kong Xunwen’s routine was mostly adjusted now, and it wasn’t his usual time to wake up. He was still a bit groggy. After a while, he woke up a little, picked up his phone, and faced the man who was in a somewhat dark place on the other side.

The man was staring intently at him.

He frowned, thinking his tone was fierce, but to the person on the other end, it still sounded soft: “Why are you calling me at this time?”

The man’s voice remained very gentle and low, as if afraid of startling something: “I have something early today. I need to go down soon, so I called you first to let you know.”

“…Mm, go on,” Kong Xunwen merely registered the sound. As for what the other person meant, he didn’t bother to think about it carefully.

By the time the other side finished his detailed report, Kong Xunwen had already pressed the snooze button on his alarm. He had planned to get up early today too.

Little Boss had mentioned having a gift for him, but they had forgotten about it for the past few days. Yesterday, she had made up her mind and told him she would come over first thing this morning to give him the gift.

The other children also joined in the fun, saying they had gifts for him too.

He didn’t know what they would be, but he couldn’t possibly still be asleep when his little guests arrived.

Also, as a return gesture, he wanted to treat them to breakfast. To prevent the children from eating before they came, they had agreed on this yesterday.

Qiu Zhijie knew about this, which was probably why he called so early.

Kong Xunwen’s mind finally cleared up. He raised his hand to rub his slightly itchy eyes and said, “So why did you call a video?”

Qiu Zhijie, who had been watching the young man’s every movement on the other side, paused and said, “I wanted to see you.”

As he spoke, he unconsciously shifted his gaze away.

Even now, he still felt a little shy whenever he said such things out loud. He always kept it brief. Only when sending messages did he seem like a different person, completely unrestrained.

Kong Xunwen lowered his hand, squinted for a few seconds, and then decided not to press the issue, mercifully letting him off the hook.

Qiu Zhijie’s gaze returned, watching the young man’s small expressions, and thought again, Fortunately, I’m recording this.

A knock came from outside the door. Kong Xunwen waved his hand: “I have something to do. Hanging up.”

He didn’t hesitate much after saying that.

Qiu Zhijie was already used to it. He got up and opened the door.

Steward Zhu nodded to him: “Your assistant is already waiting downstairs.”

Qiu Zhijie nodded and headed downstairs, saying, “I’ll eat breakfast at the Zhijie Studio later.”

Steward Zhu acknowledged this and saw him off at the door. After the car drove away, she shook her head. It seemed her previous scrutiny had been noticed.

Well, it looked like her desire for gossip wouldn’t be satisfied today.

She quickly turned around and got busy.

    *

Kong Xunwen got out of bed immediately after hanging up the phone, determined to treat the children well today. It was still dim outside the window.

By the time the children skillfully walked through the gate and into the courtyard, Kong Xunwen had already prepared breakfast, including portions for the children.

The meal, once laid out, looked exceptionally rich and plentiful on the table.

Pink dumplings, steamed buns, soup dumplings, porridge… they could find every type they wanted, and Kong Xunwen had controlled the portion size of each item.

For the children, this was a huge surprise. They hadn’t even sat down yet, but were already peering over the table at the dishes, their eyes sparkling.

Children naturally loved rich and novel things, and having a whole table full of them suited their tastes perfectly.

The gifts in their hands were mysteriously wrapped. Kong Xunwen noticed them immediately. Perhaps due to some comparison, each one was bigger than the last.

    He wondered what was inside.

When the children were all seated, placing their gifts beside them and sitting up straight in a very serious manner, Kong Xunwen felt a strange sensation well up inside him.

His hosting this time was essentially a children’s party, with him as the only outlier.

But the children already treated him as one of their own. Seeing him approach, they familiarly called out, “Brother Kong.”

They asked him to sit down and said, “Let’s start eating together.”

Kong Xunwen pressed the corners of his lips, feeling subtly like he was playing house.

Once he sat down, and with his signal, everyone finally picked up their chopsticks.

They ate quietly, without much talking. Kong Xunwen’s carefully prepared meal was perfectly to the children’s liking, and they ate everything, which brought a smile to Kong Xunwen’s eyes.

He had eaten a little too. Seeing the table empty and the children clutching their round bellies, clearly full, he stood up to clear the dishes.

Little Boss saw this and immediately slid off her chair, grabbing some dishes. The other children followed suit.

Kong Xunwen didn’t stop them, and they tidied up together in the kitchen.

Returning to the living room, Little Boss knew it was time for the next step. She looked a little awkward and shy, shuffling slightly to the side.

However, the children always followed her lead. Their attention was on her, and when she moved, they moved too.

Kong Xunwen came out, sat on the sofa, turned on the large screen for the children, and greeted his little guests: “Come on, do you want to watch a cartoon or play a game?”

Yezi immediately scampered over, followed by the other curious children.

Only Little Boss, who took the gifts most seriously, looked at her little friends with disappointment. How could they forget the important task of giving gifts?!

    But…

Cheerful music came from the big screen, which showed particularly beautiful, brightly colored, and natural images.

Liu Tingfang finally couldn’t resist her curiosity and ran over too.

Kong Xunwen was suddenly startled by this. He realized something: shouldn’t he let these children play games? Their parents might be unhappy.

But he couldn’t go back on his word, so he added a caveat: “We’ll take a break after an hour.”

The children didn’t care about that. They nodded, having barely registered the words, and looked up at the screen together.

It showed a pink-haired girl and a cat, hopping and skipping, even jumping onto rooftops.

The children’s eyes widened and shone brightly.

    So amazing!

Little Boss also became engrossed. The desire to play reached its peak. She turned her head, saw Kong Xunwen, and suddenly remembered what she was supposed to do, instantly looking annoyed.

She was still a bit shy, but she quickly walked forward, looking up with a tense face, like the frowning cat on the screen. She pushed her prepared gift forward: “This is the gift for you!”

She was so nervous she couldn’t speak clearly.

Although Kong Xunwen already knew, he was still very happy. His eyes curved, and a shallow dimple appeared at the corner of his mouth: “Thank you, I like it very much.”

Hearing this, the other children also gathered around. Little Boss felt much more relaxed now and regained her confidence, though she was still a little shy and had her own stubbornness: “You haven’t looked at my gift yet.”

Small heads squeezed together. The screen paused on the game loading page.

Kong Xunwen smiled faintly and unwrapped the gift. The packaging was simple, but the orange and blue combination was beautiful, even if the technique was clumsy.

    “Did you wrap it yourself?”

    He was already quite sure.

Little Boss’s cheeks were slightly red. She nodded, her hands clenched into fists.

“It’s very beautiful,” Kong Xunwen praised softly.

Little Boss raised her eyes, her clear pupils reflecting the young man. Brother Kong was a very good friend of hers. She suddenly said, “I will always remember you.”

Good friends should always remember and care about each other.

Kong Xunwen was stunned, seeing Liu Tingfang seriously ask in return, “And you?”

    “Me too.”

The children immediately came forward, seeking confirmation of the same question. Kong Xunwen patiently gave them the same answer.

The gift finally revealed its true appearance.

It was a cute and delicate large conch, with a small, graceful conch next to it. The bottom of the gift box was lined with beautiful shells, and there was also a conch bracelet tied together with string.

The string used was inelastic, so it couldn’t be worn on the wrist, and the conches didn’t look that great tied up, but…

“I like it very much,” Kong Xunwen said.

He looked at the items in the box. The other children also brought over their prepared gifts. Kong Xunwen unwrapped them one by one and placed them together, looking at the full collection.

Suddenly, a somewhat noisy voice came from outside.

It was very familiar, so familiar that Kong Xunwen unconsciously showed his dimples upon hearing it. The children also looked toward the door.

It was a motorcycle with a large box strapped to the back. The motorcycle looked a bit old.

The person took off their helmet, leaned over, and called out familiarly, “Little Kong.”
