Chapter Index

    Explosion Plan

The night was peaceful. Sure enough, every time the body refresh occurred, the timeline was different. Aunt Jiu did not come again last night.

In the early morning, just as dawn broke, Chen Jin and Wu Zeng carried their gear up the mountain.

Halfway up, they unexpectedly ran into Uncle Cai and his group, who were also heading up. Aunt Jiu was not among them. According to the pattern of the previous few days, today should have been the day they manufactured the poison in the pig-slaughtering den.

“Little brothers, out climbing the mountain this early?” Uncle Cai smiled kindly.

“That’s right. The weather has been quite humid these past two days. If we go up early, maybe we can find some mushrooms,” Wu Zeng replied casually, as if the beating he received the day before had never happened.

Chen Jin stood beside Wu Zeng, facing sideways, remaining silent. He did not want to interact with this group too much.

After a brief exchange, both parties went their separate ways.

“Xiao Lei, follow them and see what they’re up to. They look shifty!” Uncle Cai instructed the person next to him.

    “Understood, Uncle Cai.”

Chen Jin and Wu Zeng walked quickly. Since they had run into them, given the suspicious nature of this group, they would likely send someone to follow them immediately. It was better to walk faster and put some distance between them.

Their destination was the cliff with soft soil, which overlooked the pig-slaughtering den.

Chen Jin and Wu Zeng quickly buried power banks and firecracker fruit near the edge of the cliff. They hung a large stone from a tree with a rope, holding the other end of the rope far away. If successful, as soon as they let go, the stone would smash the firecracker fruit. The resulting fire would ignite the power banks, and the subsequent explosion would cause a landslide. The pig-slaughtering den below would be buried, and the poisonous herbs and the earthen kiln would be destroyed along with it.

After setting everything up, the two retreated to a safe distance to avoid being caught in the collapse.

Aunt Jiu suddenly appeared silently. She had shed her usual hunched posture, her hair was neatly combed, her clothes were tidy, and her expression was grim.

“Why didn’t you just blow up the earthen kiln directly?” Aunt Jiu’s voice was low and terribly hoarse, like sand scraping against a blackboard.

“If we blow up the earthen kiln, the poisonous smoke will spread. Do you want the entire village to become addicted to the herb?” Chen Jin stepped forward, staring intently into Aunt Jiu’s eyes.

“What good is it if you don’t blow up the earthen kiln? Someone will always be able to use that thing to remake the poisonous herb!” Aunt Jiu suddenly erupted in a sharp roar, completely different from her previous low, hoarse tone.

“The soil on the cliff edge is soft. Once it collapses, the site below will be buried. It will still achieve the effect of destroying the earthen kiln that you want. Why are you so fixated on blowing it up? Do you want to eliminate future trouble permanently? Or do you want to drag the entire village down to be buried with you?” Chen Jin paused, his expression grave. “Sister A Ping?”

Sister A Ping’s disguise was very convincing, but people’s experiences are completely different, and some things cannot be acted out without having lived through them. Firstly, Aunt Jiu had long been caught in the conflict between conscience and forced poison manufacturing, leaving her physically and mentally exhausted. She had no time to care for her appearance; she was demoralized and desolate. Yet, the Aunt Jiu possessed by Sister A Ping had her hair combed meticulously and her clothes clean and fresh. Secondly, in the photo Wu Zeng helped pick up, Aunt Jiu was seated on a chair while her son ran by a small pond, indicating that she could clearly walk when her son was young. Therefore, the “Aunt Jiu’s” claim the previous night that she couldn’t walk since childhood was clearly problematic. Thirdly, Aunt Jiu worked at the pig-slaughtering den every day. If she truly wanted to destroy the earthen kiln, she had countless opportunities to do so. Why wait for two outsiders to handle it?

The only one who would want to harm the entire village but couldn’t act herself was perhaps the obsession entity of this world—Sister A Ping, who was harmed by the villagers back then.

“If you don’t achieve what I demand, do you really think you can leave this place?” Sister A Ping sneered, her words carrying a hint of threat.

Chen Jin and Wu Zeng exchanged a look. If they had to destroy the entire village to leave, how would they be any different from these drug addicts? Was this truly the way to break the deadlock?

Wu Zeng nodded at Chen Jin, his eyes full of trust: follow your heart.

Chen Jin let go of the rope. With a whoosh, the stone smashed directly onto the firecracker fruit. Flames quickly ignited.

As the fire spread and the temperature rose, with a bang, the two buried power banks exploded from the heat, causing the left side of the cliff to collapse immediately.

The method worked! However, the distance was miscalculated. Before the fire could spread further, the soil and wood on the left side had already started falling, rendering the power banks and firecracker fruit buried on the right side useless.

To complete the explosion now, someone would have to go over and smash the fruit on the right side.

“Uncle Cai, over here! Over here!” Xiao Lei shouted. After spotting the two in action, he immediately ran down to report, and now he had brought a large group of people.

“What are you doing!” Uncle Cai roared upon hearing the loud noise, loudly signaling the local men behind him to grab the two.

Wu Zeng kicked away Xiao Lei, who rushed up, and tossed a coil of rope to Chen Jin.

Chen Jin immediately understood. He ran a few steps to the large tree nearby, threw the rope with force, hooking it onto a branch. One end was held in his hand, the other dangled in mid-air.

Wu Zeng flipped over, side-kicking Gao Fang who lunged at him, then threw a hook punch that knocked down another attacker coming from the other direction.

Unlike the situation last night, the current Wu Zeng was unstoppable.

Wu Zeng subdued the incoming attackers one by one. He ran a few steps, jumped forcefully, and grabbed the swinging rope in mid-air. Then, with another running start, he charged forward, and after a few steps, he precisely stomped on the firecracker fruit, crushing it.

As the fire flared up, Chen Jin pulled back hard on the rope, and Wu Zeng took the opportunity to jump.

A loud boom followed. The remaining half of the mountain soil finally collapsed, dragging the large tree on the mountainside down with it.

“It’s over…” Xiao Lei muttered these words repeatedly as he watched the collapse in front of him.

“Do you think he’s really on your side?” Sister A Ping sneered. “Only a fool like you would believe that!”

Chen Jin remained silent. He didn’t want to talk much with Sister A Ping. There were too many variables in this world, and he truly didn’t have the energy to distinguish truth from falsehood. At least in this moment, Wu Zeng, who had been by his side, was the most trustworthy.

Chen Jin pulled the rope taut, helping Wu Zeng run back faster from the continuously collapsing cliff edge.

“Don’t be skeptical. Otherwise, why did you cross the village boundary last night, and not him?” Sister A Ping approached Chen Jin step by step, her words full of mockery. She spoke slowly, emphasizing each word, “Think carefully about what appeared on your body after you crossed the boundary.”

Chen Jin paused at the words. He only felt a faint itching in his stomach again, but he showed no outward sign, nor did the strength in his hands slacken even slightly.

“Let me see, is it here?” Sister A Ping, wearing Aunt Jiu’s face, reached out and touched Chen Jin’s stomach, her tone becoming seductive. “In this world, you only have seven chances to cross the boundary. Once you exceed seven attempts, you will become a cocoon and stay here with me forever~”

Chen Jin’s entire body stiffened, but he still dared not relax. The explosion was powerful. Even though Wu Zeng had jumped in advance, he was still thrown off balance. If Chen Jin lost focus for a moment, Wu Zeng might not make it back.

Chen Jin kept his eyes fixed, gripping the rope tightly. He pulled with such force that the veins on his arms bulged, and blood spots began to seep from the skin between his fingers due to the friction with the rough rope.

Suddenly, the name of Uncle A Dong on Chen Jin’s fingers emitted a faint light, and the entire world began to shake.

Sister A Ping immediately fell to her knees, clutching her head and howling in pain. This world was collapsing.

Uncle Cai’s eyes turned red. He had silently crept up behind Chen Jin at some point. Ignoring the shaking ground, he raised his dagger, ready to stab Chen Jin in the neck.

“Watch out!” Wu Zeng shouted, leaping toward Chen Jin. He grabbed him and rolled to the side. Uncle Cai’s dagger plunged straight into Wu Zeng’s arm. A wave of blood filled Chen Jin’s nostrils.

Wu Zeng firmly protected Chen Jin’s head, but with the continuous rolling, Chen Jin still felt his mind go blank, and he subsequently passed out.

Before losing consciousness, Chen Jin had only one thought: Am I hurt?

Chen Jin fainted at the sight of blood, but only his own.

Wu Zeng had already rolled several times with Chen Jin. The continuous rolling made the wound from the dagger deeper and more mangled. Finally, the two stopped abruptly when they hit a tree trunk.

“Xiao Jin, Xiao Jin, wake up!” Wu Zeng shook Chen Jin, rousing him from his daze.

The people around them began to dissipate little by little. Uncle Cai watched his body gradually turn into particles and drift away, his face filled with disbelief.

Chen Jin looked up. Before his eyes was Wu Zeng’s arm, still pierced by the dagger, a bloody mess. “Your… arm.”

    “I’m fine…”

Before Wu Zeng could finish speaking, Chen Jin fainted again. The surrounding world gradually began to show a green hue.

When the shaking stopped, Wu Zeng found himself back in the Guesthouse bathroom. He quickly tore off his clothes, pulled out the dagger, and tightly bound the wound.

After everything was dealt with, Wu Zeng woke Chen Jin from his unconsciousness again.

“Let’s go out and see.” Chen Jin helped Wu Zeng up by his uninjured hand, pulling him off the floor. The two walked out of the room together.

However, there was still no change outside the door.

“Brother Zeng! Brother Jin!” Uncle A Dong rushed up, barging into Chen Jin’s room without a care. He shouted happily, “You succeeded!!!”

“Can we leave now?” Chen Jin asked, his expression poor.

    “…Maybe not.”

“What did you say?!” Chen Jin roared. Was everything another one of Uncle A Dong’s tricks? What in this world was real anymore?

Wu Zeng kicked Uncle A Dong, who quickly continued, “Ah, no, no, open the window and look.”

The two peered outside. The view through the window was blurry. When they reached out to feel it, they found an invisible wall, sealing them tightly within the Guesthouse.
