Chapter Index

Without the pull of the mental energy, the gray matter quickly retreated back into Lishiel’s soul, hiding even deeper.

The mental energy in the room fluctuated noticeably, a precursor to the uncontrolled individual launching a second attack.

Su Sheng pressed a hidden button on the wall. Once pressed, this button meant the surrounding space was completely sealed, making it impossible to open from the outside.

Lishiel had told him about this after learning his plan.

Once mental energy goes out of control, it is irreversible, and the resulting destruction increases geometrically. Therefore, controlling the situation first was paramount.

The person who lost control must have suffered a shock beforehand, planting the seed for the loss of control. To silently send such a person past the Bureau’s inspection and into this facility, and to have anticipated that they would use this method of treatment and wait-and-see approach—there could be only one person responsible.

    The answer was obvious.

Su Sheng frowned, but he needed to survive long enough to deliver that answer.

Su Sheng knew clearly that this was a gamble. That person was betting that he would die here, allowing them to fully control Lishiel.

The second mental energy outburst usually resulted in a direct “explosion.” The range of the explosion varied by rank, and for S-rank, the radius was fifty meters.

That meant this room plus the entire corridor.

The mental energy in the room grew increasingly violent. At the same time, Lishiel, who was lying in bed, opened his eyes and sat up.

Unlike before, Lishiel’s eyes were vacant, like an empty shell without a soul.

    …He was completely controlled.

The mental energy belonging to Lishiel tightly wrapped around Su Sheng, making it difficult for him to move, while the uncontrolled individual staggered toward them.

As a fellow S-rank, if an explosion occurred at such close range, Su Sheng’s soul would be shattered into pieces, leaving absolutely no chance of survival.

Su Sheng’s heart pounded rapidly, his muscles tense. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself.

    What should he do?

    He asked himself.

When his gaze swept over Lishiel, he suddenly remembered that the gray matter fed on souls.

If the gray matter consumed the soul before him, even just a part of it, he could survive.

But could Lishiel withstand the gray matter after it had grown stronger?

    Su Sheng hesitated.

In that moment of hesitation, the uncontrolled individual had reached him. The S-rank mental energy infinitely contracted, then began to expand again. Just as this cluster of white light was about to touch Su Sheng’s soul, Su Sheng finally released his own mental energy, rushing straight toward Lishiel’s soul.

However, at that moment, a change occurred—

The explosion came faster than expected, yet the layer of mental energy that had been restricting his soul—Lishiel’s mental energy—now transformed into a shield harder than steel, firmly protecting him.

Su Sheng’s eyes snapped open, his pupils contracting. Lishiel had blocked all of the uncontrolled individual’s mental energy!

At the same time, he could feel the layer of mental energy enveloping his soul rapidly weakening.

Su Sheng reached out in a daze, but only grasped empty air.

Mental energy was formless and could not be captured by the physical body.

Realizing this, a sense of powerlessness suddenly sprang up like a small fountain, quickly accumulating into an ocean that threatened to drown him.

This feeling was similar to, yet different from, the time he was waiting to die after his tendons were severed in a small world. At least then, he hadn’t reached the point of utter despair.

Lishiel had fallen back down, his face bearing his usual pallor. His eyes were open, allowing Su Sheng to see his gradually dilating pupils.

Su Sheng stumbled over, murmuring, “How could this happen…”

Hadn’t they agreed on a plan?

    Why didn’t he follow it?

He frantically pressed the green button by the bed, wanting to unlock the seal, but it was useless. Then he remembered that there was a biological lock; only Lishiel had the authority to open it.

He tremblingly grabbed Lishiel’s hand and pressed it down.

The warmth was still in his hand, and the body’s vital signs hadn’t completely vanished, yet Su Sheng knew that without a soul, the death of the body was only a matter of time.

Su Sheng held Lishiel, watching the medical personnel stream in and take Lishiel away. He wanted to follow but was stopped and forcibly removed under the pretext of “confidentiality.”

There was a hidden camera in Lishiel’s room that mental energy could not interfere with. They had left their suspicion in the room. As long as the Transmigration Bureau was not completely infiltrated, that person would surely be brought to justice.

    .

    One year later.

Su Sheng returned from a mission in a small world and received a message.

The Transmigration Bureau sent him a box containing two letters. He opened the first letter and read:

Norton, I am sorry. I know I have caused you too much pain. I want your forgiveness, yet I fear it, so I can only say goodbye in this manner.

I hope this time, I can protect you from any danger.

Finally, please do not choose to forgive me.

    —Your eternal enemy, Lishiel.

    An enemy? Indeed.

Su Sheng tried to curve his lips, to at least smile, but found himself utterly powerless.

Next, he opened the second letter. The second letter was sent to him by the Transmigration Bureau under Shen Yu’s name, stating that it concerned a secret matter and required him to visit.

Every time he encountered the words “secret matter,” he seemed to run into disaster.

    Finally, he thought, I’ll go.

Could there be a worse secret than Lishiel dying?

Su Sheng arrived at Shen Yu’s office. Shen Yu was standing by the window, looking at the scenery. Seeing him arrive, he smiled and asked, “Do you miss him?”

Despite the abruptness of the question, Su Sheng immediately understood. A light shone in his eyes: “Is there news of him?”

Shen Yu tapped the desk and said, “No.”

The atmosphere became noticeably silent. After a moment, a voice sounded in the air.

“Although I don’t have any, perhaps you can visit that sanatorium. Although the location is hidden, you’ve worked at the Transmigration Bureau for so many years, you should know about it, right?”

Su Sheng didn’t even have time to say thank you before rushing out.

He certainly knew where that sanatorium was located.

    .

A white light flashed from the teleportation array, and Su Sheng stepped out.

This was an abandoned small world that no one paid attention to, yet it was the chosen location for the Transmigration Bureau’s high-level sanatorium.

In front of him was a Chinese-style sanatorium, and behind him was the boundless ocean.

Su Sheng did not enter through the main gate, as he was not qualified enough.

He found the outlet of a discarded pipe leading into the sea, directly above the water, and climbed in from there. The sanatorium was vast, with crisscrossing pipes, making it easy to get lost. Thus, Su Sheng struggled immensely before finally finding an exit.

Once inside, he began searching based on the information Shen Yu had given him, all the way up to the highest floor of the hospital.

Walking through the corridor, he reached Room 307. He slowly pushed the door open, and upon seeing the person lying inside, tears streamed down his face uncontrollably.

    He had found him.

He walked closer, seeing the person’s peaceful face, surrounded by machines designed to heal the soul.

A voice sounded from behind him:

    “You finally found this place.”

Su Sheng turned and saw a short man in a black shirt standing at the door, looking at him with a complicated expression.

Su Sheng asked, “How is he?”

The short man replied, “He’s alright, but his soul damage is severe. We don’t know if he’ll wake up. You could say he’s become a vegetable.”

    “What exactly happened?”

The short man continued, “The gray matter helped him absorb some of the explosion’s force, plus his own mental energy reached SSS-rank, so he was lucky enough not to die. But this is the result.” The man shrugged.

Su Sheng said, “Let me take care of him from now on.”

The man smiled. “I think the higher-ups will agree.”

    .

After receiving approval from the higher-ups, Su Sheng officially moved in.

Every day, he would wipe Lishiel’s body, gently help him sit up, feed him water and food, and finally tell Lishiel some interesting stories from the past.

Three days later, Su Sheng stepped out to fetch some water. When he returned, he helped Lishiel sit up, intending to feed him water.

The person before him still showed no reaction, but Su Sheng held the water in his mouth and passed it over, lip to lip. He had been feeding him water this way for the past few days.

Only by doing this could Su Sheng confirm that the person was alive.

Sensing the person before him swallow, he was about to pull away when he looked up and met a pair of smiling, utterly gentle eyes.
