Chapter Index

Footsteps rapidly approached. Gu Shenyuan turned his head and, through the bloody light barrier, saw Ye Qingyun rushing toward him, his face etched with anxiety.

Gu Shenyuan glanced at Ye Qingyun, then lowered his head.

…His current appearance was too wretched and ugly.

Since they would be separated soon, he hoped to leave the best possible image in Ye Qingyun’s mind.

“Gu Shenyuan! How are you?” Ye Qingyun had reached the light barrier. He tried to reach out and touch Gu Shenyuan but found he couldn’t pass through the barrier.

He and Gu Shenyuan were separated by a thin layer of light, standing on opposite sides, unable to feel each other’s warmth.

Ye Qingyun anxiously hammered the light barrier. “Gu Shenyuan, speak! How much longer can you hold on?”

Gu Shenyuan heard Ye Qingyun’s voice. Although he had just been thinking about leaving a good impression, he couldn’t help but raise his head to look at Ye Qingyun.

He wanted to see him, desperately.

Gu Shenyuan’s face was pale, completely drained of color. Though he was trembling with pain, the moment he saw Ye Qingyun, he forced a smile.

“Did I scare you?” Gu Shenyuan said softly. “Don’t look at me. I’m hideous.”

“You…” Ye Qingyun gritted his teeth, took a deep breath, and pressed his hand against the light barrier.

The skin touching the barrier felt a stinging pain, but Ye Qingyun didn’t pull his hand back. Instead, he controlled his invisible Mental Strength, slowly infiltrating the light barrier.

He had to find the weak point of this device in the shortest time possible, destroy the weapon with a single strike, and rescue Gu Shenyuan.

At the same time, he needed to comfort Gu Shenyuan and distract him, preventing any accidents that might occur if Gu Shenyuan became too emotionally agitated.

“What time is it? And you’re still worried about your appearance?” Ye Qingyun said in a muffled voice. “I never saw you care about your looks before.”

Gu Shenyuan smiled, watching Ye Qingyun without blinking, his eyes filled with deep reluctance and longing.

“After I die, you… find someone to take care of you,” Gu Shenyuan said, pausing painfully for a long while before continuing. “Don’t raise the child alone. It’s too tiring.”

Although he said this, the thought of Ye Qingyun being with someone else, having another man care for their child, or even… having children with another man, caused him bone-deep agony.

The lips he had kissed would be kissed by another man. The hands he had held would be held by another man.

He hadn’t even been able to hold a wedding with Ye Qingyun, they hadn’t formally married.

Therefore, Ye Qingyun’s first true husband wouldn’t be him. Ye Qingyun’s first time wouldn’t have been with him.

Another man would taste the flavors he hadn’t, give Ye Qingyun his first experience, and leave a deeper mark on Ye Qingyun’s heart.

…He would be like a fleeting cloud, dispersed quickly. Their child might be the only thing proving they were ever together.

Ye Qingyun laughed. At this point, he stopped hiding and confessed frankly: “Where would a child come from? I’m a grown man, how could I get pregnant?”

    Gu Shenyuan froze.

“I lied to you. I only said that back then to stop you from running around. Are you stupid?” Ye Qingyun said. “You believed such a ridiculous lie?”

Gu Shenyuan lowered his eyes, his mood strangely calm. “…Is that so.”

Then the last link between him and Ye Qingyun was gone too.

That was fine. The painful past shouldn’t exist. Rather than being remembered, he preferred Ye Qingyun to live happily.

Let it be this way. Everything was perfect now.

Ye Qingyun continued, “I don’t want to find anyone else. I just want to be with you. Isn’t it good if I stay with you for the rest of my life?”

Gu Shenyuan knew these were sweet words spoken to him before his death, but hearing them still made him uncontrollably happy. “Good.”

“Good is right. Why are you always thinking of making me find someone else? You need to seriously reflect on that.” Ye Qingyun finally found the weak point of the weapon. While enduring the pain of withdrawing all his Mental Strength to prepare for a fatal strike, he continued chatting with Gu Shenyuan.

“Do you believe in reincarnation in this world?”

Gu Shenyuan chuckled softly and shook his head.

For so many years, theology had long disappeared, proven to be non-existent. All talk of the supernatural was merely special Ability users playing tricks.

“It exists. There is reincarnation,” Ye Qingyun insisted, showing a stubborn streak. “When a person dies, after a while, they will re-enter the cycle of reincarnation and return to this world.”

A sharp pain twisted in Ye Qingyun’s chest. He had revealed too much, violating a hard rule, and received a warning.

Ye Qingyun didn’t shut up. He stared intently at Gu Shenyuan, insisting, “Do you understand?”

Gu Shenyuan didn’t understand. He didn’t know why Ye Qingyun was telling him this. Did Ye Qingyun want to find his reincarnation and be with him again?

But reincarnation didn’t exist in the world. If Ye Qingyun really found such a person, they would only be similar to him, not actually him!

He didn’t want anyone to be his substitute. He didn’t want his image in Ye Qingyun’s heart to be completely overwritten, or easily altered, by another person.

Gu Shenyuan forced himself to stand up. He needed to explain clearly to Ye Qingyun and make him abandon the idea of searching for his reincarnation.

Before he could speak, Gu Shenyuan saw a mouthful of bright red blood spat onto the light barrier.

Gu Shenyuan stared stiffly at the pool of blood, his mind blank. He slowly shifted his gaze and saw Ye Qingyun’s current appearance.

In an instant, Ye Qingyun’s face had turned terrifyingly gray. His eyes, usually bright and warm, were now dim and lifeless, containing the chill of death.

“…Qingyun?” Gu Shenyuan called out in disbelief.

Ye Qingyun looked at him and smiled.

“You won’t die,” Ye Qingyun’s eyes were gentle. “I won’t let you die.”

Spiderweb-like cracks began to appear on the light barrier separating them. The cracks expanded little by little, until finally, with a loud boom, the barrier shattered.

Scattered red light particles obscured vision. The pain in Gu Shenyuan’s body vanished. Unable to see clearly, he groped forward, desperately trying to find Ye Qingyun.

Gu Shenyuan’s fingertips were icy cold. He was trembling all over, afraid to dwell on what had just happened.

Why had the Ability Inhibitor suddenly been destroyed? Why did Ye Qingyun look like that?

The light particles finally dissipated, and Gu Shenyuan saw where Ye Qingyun was.

Ye Qingyun lay on the ground not far away, his face ashen, his eyes tightly closed.
