Rat, Rabbit, And Rabbit Transformed Into Humans And Married Their Natural Enemies. Chapter 66
byChapter 66
Bai Zhi felt tormented the entire way, his heart burning with anxiety. His temper was flaring up uncontrollably.
Especially when he thought about Xie Yuzhan coming to see him while sick, it was like adding fuel to the fire!
So he had a fever!
No wonder he didn’t want a hug! How could Xie Yuzhan possibly refuse his spontaneous embrace? He never had before. The reason for his strange behavior today must have been that a hug would have exposed him!
No, the more he thought about it, the angrier he got. How could someone so old be so bad at taking care of himself? What was most unexpected was the petty refusal to take medicine.
It wasn’t like something CEO Xie would do.
When he arrived at the villa complex, the taxi couldn’t enter. Fortunately, Lin Haiyan had already informed the guard, and a security patrol car drove him the rest of the way. Otherwise, running that distance would have taken a considerable amount of time.
Lin Haiyan and Zheng Feng were waiting under the porch, and they both visibly relaxed when they saw him.
He headed straight for the third floor, asking, “Besides not taking medicine, did he eat dinner?”
Lin Haiyan sighed, helpless and worried. “Only a little.”
In the time it took to exchange a few words, they reached the door of the master bedroom on the third floor. He grasped the doorknob and instructed Lin Haiyan, “Please prepare some food and the medicine. Bring them in later.”
“Alright.”
Watching Bai Zhi knock and enter the master bedroom, Lin Haiyan and Zheng Feng exchanged a look. This was truly a case of one thing conquering another. They had to admit it. Xie Yuzhan was helpless against Bai Zhi, completely helpless, and they were very grateful for that.
Thankfully, there was still one person whose words carried weight.
When Bai Zhi saw Xie Yuzhan, the other man was leaning against the headboard, flipping through a book. The warm light softly illuminated him, softening his usual aloof demeanor.
Perhaps because he was still ill, he lacked energy, giving him a gentle, languid appearance.
This was the first time Bai Zhi had seen him like this.
Before he even got close, Xie Yuzhan spoke without lifting his head, telling him to take the medicine away because he wouldn’t take it.
Bai Zhi ignored the comment. He walked to the bedside and stood there silently, a knot of frustration in his chest, just staring intently at the man before him.
Xie Yuzhan quickly sensed something was wrong. He looked up and met a pair of caramel-colored eyes blazing with anger.
The gaze was scorching.
The fire was burning fiercely.
Looking at the man who was momentarily stunned, Bai Zhi’s face was grim. “Very well. CEO Xie certainly knows how to torment his own body. Sick and refusing medicine, staying up this late, reading? What book is so captivating?”
As he spoke, he leaned over to glance at the book in Xie Yuzhan’s hand. That look made him pause; it wasn’t a book at all, but a photo album.
It contained photos of him taken during various events.
Thinking back to what he had just said, he felt a bit tongue-tied. He had spoken too quickly.
Xie Yuzhan had recovered his composure by now. He closed the album and placed it on the nightstand. “It is very captivating. Doesn’t Zhizhi think so?”
Bai Zhi scoffed, leaned closer, and gently stroked Xie Yuzhan’s cheek with one hand while brushing aside the man’s unusually messy fringe with the other. He pressed his forehead against Xie Yuzhan’s—
Forehead to forehead, eyes locked with eyes.
After ten seconds, he straightened up, unable to suppress his anger. “It’s at least thirty-eight degrees! Do you think you’re made of iron? Still refusing medicine? Trying to tough it out? It’s been three days. If you keep burning up, you might fry your brain.
“If you really fry your brain, where am I going to find another sensible and interesting CEO Xie?”
Xie Yuzhan chuckled softly, relaxing back against the headboard. Seeing Bai Zhi’s tight frown, he offered reassurance. “It’s a minor issue, no need to worry. I’ll be fine in a couple of days.
“It’s Aunt Lin who bothered you by contacting you at this hour and making you rush over.”
Bai Zhi sat down on the edge of the bed and folded his arms. He pursed his lips, adjusting his emotions. “I felt something was off when we met tonight. I couldn’t sleep when I got back, tossing and turning, so I just got up.
“When Aunt Lin messaged me, I was already on my way here.”
He paused here, staring intently into Xie Yuzhan’s eyes. “I wanted to confirm with my own eyes that you were okay.”
The man’s deep, dark eyes were slightly moist right now. For some reason, it made him feel like kissing them. Moreover, a sick CEO Xie looked much more docile than usual.
It made him want to ruffle his hair.
Thinking this, he acted on it. He leaned in, reached out, and ruffled Xie Yuzhan’s hair. His voice was slightly muffled. “I built up a lot of anger on the way here. I wanted to curse you for neglecting your health, to give you a good, harsh scolding so you’d remember not to treat your body like nothing.
“But right now, this is all I want to do.”
Xie Yuzhan lowered his eyes slightly. This feeling was truly… very unfamiliar.
But it wasn’t unwelcome.
He allowed Bai Zhi to mess up his not-very-neat hair and asked, “Besides ruffling my hair, is there anything else you want to do?”
Xie Yuzhan’s voice was low and husky, tinged with amusement. It was incredibly soft and warm on this summer night, like a cloud, drifting lightly into Bai Zhi’s embrace.
Bai Zhi followed his heart and leaned in to hug the man directly.
He was indeed burning hot.
He buried his face in Xie Yuzhan’s shoulder, his voice even more muffled. “I wanted to hug you at the shop entrance, but you didn’t let me. Now you’re making up for it.”
Xie Yuzhan gently patted Bai Zhi’s back and sighed softly. “Thank you, Zhizhi, for considering that I’m sick and not scolding me.”
Bai Zhi froze, then sat up straight, glaring at him. His tone rose. “I’d rather you be perfectly fine and me have wasted a trip tonight!”
Xie Yuzhan blinked at Bai Zhi, lowering his voice. “That’s unfortunate, then. Zhizhi, you’ve gone to so much trouble. Please take care of me.”
Bai Zhi felt like he had been dazzled.
Tonight’s Xie Yuzhan was different from usual.
Was that… was that flirting? Or was he taking advantage of his illness to manipulate Bai Zhi’s soft heart… was he pouting? Bai Zhi couldn’t tell, but either way, it was very hard to refuse.
He simply couldn’t refuse.
He looked away, practically hearing the loud, frantic thumping of the little deer in his heart—咚咚咚咚—as if it were trying to burst out of his chest.
Fortunately, a knock sounded at the door just then. He secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
It was Aunt Lin. A rabbit life saver.
He got up and went to meet her, taking the tray from Lin Haiyan. It held a bowl of congee, a plate of three-delicacy steamed dumplings, some refreshing side dishes, and, of course, the medicine.
They exchanged a brief look. After seeing her out, he returned to the bedside, sat down, and shoved the congee bowl into Xie Yuzhan’s hands without question. His face was stern. “CEO Xie, please, for my sake, since I rushed over late at night, eat your meal obediently, then take your medicine. Don’t make everyone worry, understood?”
Xie Yuzhan stirred the congee but didn’t intend to eat. He looked at Bai Zhi and said slowly, “I don’t quite understand right now.”
“…”
Bai Zhi was also confused about what was going on with Xie Yuzhan. He scratched his head. “Did you really turn into a childish brat just because you’re sick? What don’t you understand? What part? I’ll explain it to you.”
Xie Yuzhan handed the congee bowl back to Bai Zhi, the meaning obvious. “You said you would take care of me.”
“I didn’t say that!”
“That was your intention.”
Bai Zhi glared… well, he was tired of glaring. Tonight’s Xie Yuzhan was just wrong.
He resignedly picked up the congee bowl and fed it to the other man, drawing out his tone with a sense of giving up. “Ah—Yuzhan Gege, be a good boy, open wide~~”
Xie Yuzhan’s eyes curved slightly. He truly cooperated, finishing the bowl of congee and most of the steamed dumplings.
Bai Zhi ate two dumplings with him, genuinely feeling like he was coaxing a child. But then again, he had rushed over himself, and he was doing this willingly.
Xie Yuzhan had always taken care of him before. This way… was also quite nice.
He poured a cup of warm water and placed the fever reducer in Xie Yuzhan’s hand. “Take your medicine. You’ll get better faster.”
Seeing no reaction, he added, “Even though I don’t like hospitals, when you’re sick, you really should take your medicine properly. You can’t be more willful and immature than me, can you? You’re two years older than me. I call you Gege; shouldn’t you set a good example for me?”
Xie Yuzhan stared at Bai Zhi for a moment, then chuckled softly. “Alright, I’ll listen to you.”
“Good boy.”
Watching Xie Yuzhan take the medicine, Bai Zhi relaxed. He then said, “Time to sleep? It’s late.”
Xie Yuzhan looked at Bai Zhi, leaned forward, and slowly rested his head on Bai Zhi’s shoulder. He didn’t embrace him, just leaned lightly, his voice slightly muffled. “Then you can leave without worry.”
Bai Zhi’s back stiffened, then quickly relaxed. He gently patted Xie Yuzhan’s back. “I can wait until you fall asleep before I go.”
Xie Yuzhan was silent for a moment, then his voice dropped, murmuring, “I won’t hurt you, Zhizhi. I won’t. You said I was a wolf, so I will certainly keep my claws retracted. I won’t hurt you at all. Don’t worry.”
Bai Zhi’s eyes trembled. He was still dwelling on that.
A wolf with retracted claws?
Could he believe it?
He didn’t know.
He turned his head and rubbed Xie Yuzhan’s hair, coaxing him. “When you’re sick, you need more rest. Stop thinking about all this nonsense, and stop stressing. You’ll recover faster.”
Xie Yuzhan didn’t move or respond again.
A few minutes later, he straightened up and obediently lay down. His gaze towards Bai Zhi was warm and steady. “I can sleep, but can a sick person have a small privilege?”
Bai Zhi pretty much knew what Xie Yuzhan wanted.
Perhaps the night was simply too deep, making his thoughts sluggish and easily swayed by emotion, less rational than during the day. If he were rational, he wouldn’t have rushed over so late.
Perhaps a subconscious desire had momentarily gained the upper hand, not giving rationality time to react.
What was done was done, and he didn’t regret it. Xie Yuzhan said they could be close friends. Being like this was fine, as long as they didn’t cross the line.
As long as they didn’t cross the line.
The night flowed silently. After Xie Yuzhan’s breathing became steady and even, Bai Zhi got up to leave. But after two steps, he paused. His hands hanging at his sides slowly curled into fists.
The emotions that had been suppressed deep down since he moved out, yet continued to grow silently, finally broke through the repression of his rationality and surfaced, now that Xie Yuzhan was fast asleep.
Xie Yuzhan had previously mentioned being unable to control himself. Bai Zhi was now experiencing what that felt like.
It was unbearable.
He took a deep breath, but still couldn’t suppress the thoughts bubbling up in his heart. He resignedly turned back to the bedside and crouched down.
He stared at the sleeping Xie Yuzhan. The man’s already pale lips were even whiter due to the illness, but to Bai Zhi, they held an incomparable attraction. He braced his hands on the edge of the bed and slowly leaned closer—
Just one kiss. He wouldn’t know.
After the kiss, they could pretend nothing happened.
Xie Yuzhan had asked for a break-up gift. Bai Zhi hadn’t received his yet. A kiss could serve as a formal farewell to this relationship.
