    Chapter 20

As Bai Zhi froze, the surroundings fell into a silence where a dropped needle could be heard.

He didn’t understand why Xie Yuzhan would propose such a ritualistic act. Huh? This was clearly an enticement for him to offer up his precious life! It was seduction!

It was the whisper of the Grim Reaper!

Don’t think that just because the voice was pleasant, the person was good-looking, and the eyes looked sincere, he would fall for it.

He covered his neck with both hands and practically jumped backward. “No! No biting… wait, no kissing! Absolutely no kissing! This kind of ritual isn’t essential! I can’t fulfill this responsibility!”

Seeing Bai Zhi startled into a shiver, Xie Yuzhan was silent for three seconds. This level of rejection… a goodnight kiss was still too much at this stage.

He softened his tone, trying to be as calm as possible, and confirmed, “A kiss on the forehead or cheek then?”

Bai Zhi shook his head, kept shaking his head, continuously outputting exclamation points, and said repeatedly, “No, no! I can’t do it!”

To him, it made no difference! Kissing anywhere was still kissing his face, wasn’t it?

    It was all equally close!

He absolutely couldn’t engage in such a dangerous extreme sport as walking a tightrope. They could still talk relatively peacefully, and they had a decent understanding in public, but that didn’t mean he dared to put his neck near Mr. Wolf’s mouth.

That was disrespecting the laws of nature and biological instinct!

    Xie Yuzhan understood.

    Fine.

Cultivating feelings had to be done slowly, step by step, gradually, without rushing. Fortunately, this little rabbit liked staying home and wouldn’t wander off, making him hard to find. Keeping him under his nose was the best scenario.

Sooner or later, this little rabbit would be his.

He feigned a sigh, frowned slightly, and said, “Then, taking a step back, would a hug be acceptable?”

Bai Zhi’s bristled fur slowly smoothed down again. A goodnight hug? It was still very close. If he was held tightly, it would be hard to break free, but…

Looking at Xie Yuzhan, whose eyes held a hint of disappointment and a touch of expectation, he suddenly felt a pang of reluctance for some reason.

It was the same kind of expression as a pika baby who hadn’t been greeted by its mother, an expression he had seen more than once, only with more fear than the person in front of him.

Speaking of which, Xie Yuzhan’s parents passed away very early. His paternal uncle and aunt couldn’t be considered family. No matter how good Lin Haiyan and Zheng Feng were, they were completely different from parents, so…

Was he seeking a little familial comfort?

Because they were in an agreement relationship, they were perhaps freer.

After thinking all this through, he took a deep breath. It was time to summon his courage. Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid. His legs were nimble, and he could run fast enough. No problem, no problem.

He didn’t answer Xie Yuzhan. He took two steps forward, hugged the other person quickly, and then swiftly retreated to his original position, saying, “There, hugged.”

Xie Yuzhan couldn’t help but chuckle. This little rabbit was alert and clever enough.

He raised his hand and ruffled Bai Zhi’s hair. “Good, we’ve hugged. Go to sleep. Try not to stay up too late.”

Bai Zhi acknowledged him, walked to his room door, turned his head, and saw Xie Yuzhan still standing at the staircase landing. He waved at him, said goodnight again, and then entered the room.

He scurried onto the bed, hugging the two Pikachu plushies, one on each side. Why did he feel like Xie Yuzhan wasn’t quite right?

But if asked exactly what was wrong, he couldn’t pinpoint it.

    It was just a hunch.

However, since he hadn’t detected any danger signals, he decided to let it go. No need to overthink; it would just give him a headache. Focus on the big picture and ignore the small details. As long as the main issue of survival was handled, the rest could be left to blissful ignorance.

He slept well that night, so soundly that he didn’t wake up until past nine.

He ate alone, tidied up the plants on the terrace, did his live stream, ate a small cake while reading an encyclopedia of nature, with the early September sunlight, already losing its scorching intensity, filtering through the blackout curtains.

He narrowed his eyes in satisfaction. This was what living life was all about—fulfilling and comfortable.

    Feeling wonderful~

He lazily dozed off on the sofa. When he woke up and checked his phone, Lu Qinghe had sent him several messages, complete with pictures and text.

Seeing this, he instantly sat up straight.

Xie Jiahang was beaten up at a bar early last night?

    Such good news?!

He called Lu Qinghe and chattered away, his gossip flame burning bright. Was this the heavens themselves disapproving of Xie Jiahang’s shamelessness? Good beating!

After the dinner party last night, the guy must have gone straight to the bar, probably to vent his frustration and anger. He got into a conflict with someone and was ganged up on. By the time he reacted, the attackers were long gone.

The bar was dim and chaotic, and the surveillance cameras didn’t capture anything.

He couldn’t help but laugh. This was truly satisfying. Xie Jiahang must be even more furious. The news of him being beaten at a bar was now widely known. Would the image-conscious Xie Minghong give his troublesome son a good look?

This was a complete family scandal!

He had to tell Xie Yuzhan in person so the other man could be happy too.

He estimated the time and waited by the door, wanting to be the first to deliver the good news. But! CEO Xie beat him to it, handing over the item he was carrying.

    Huh?

    What was it?

He looked at the small gift box in front of him, tilting his head in confusion to look at Xie Yuzhan. “What is this? Is it for me? Why the sudden gift?”

Xie Yuzhan’s lips curved slightly. “To reward you. Zhi Zhi’s performance last night was excellent.”

Bai Zhi genuinely thought back, then nodded seriously, saying, “Mm, I think so too.”

After speaking, he couldn’t help but smile, then asked, “What did you get me?”

Xie Yuzhan handed the gift box to Bai Zhi. “Open it yourself and see.”

    “Okay~”

Bai Zhi held the gift box and walked briskly inside with Xie Yuzhan. After sitting down in the living room on the first floor, he opened the box. When he saw what was inside, he let out a gasp of surprise.

He looked at the gift, then at Xie Yuzhan, so excited he was stuttering. “How… how did you think of giving me this!”

Inside the gift box were six small boxes neatly arranged. They were candy boxes.

They were shaped like carrots, cherry radishes, Chinese cabbage, grass patches, daisies, and sunflowers, all very lifelike. He opened one and saw that the candies inside were also the corresponding shapes. When he smelled them, wow! They smelled exactly like their respective flavors!

Oh my goodness, how did he find candies with such unique flavors!

He held the exquisite candy boxes, unable to put them down, his voice rising in excitement. “Where did you find these? Besides the carrot, none of these are conventional flavors.”

Xie Yuzhan looked at Bai Zhi, whose eyes were sparkling with little stars, and pinched his cheek. The little rabbit, caught up in his excitement, didn’t even dodge.

He withdrew his hand and said, “Vegetable and floral flavored candies are rare, but niche doesn’t mean no one makes them.”

There were even more bizarre flavors available.

Bai Zhi nodded. “They must have been hard to find. CEO Xie, you went to a lot of trouble~ Thank you! I really like them!”

When he was a rabbit, his favorite food was snow lotus, but it was hard to find, only encountering one with good luck. Now, these non-mainstream flavored candies were equally hard to find. It required effort and luck.

    Mr. Wolf was very sincere.

Xie Yuzhan watched Bai Zhi. His smile was pure, an overflow of genuine emotion. Just watching him made his mood excellent.

He complimented him, “You look even cuter when you smile than usual.”

Bai Zhi paused, pursed his lips, and gave a muffled laugh. He picked up a carrot-flavored candy and fed it directly to Xie Yuzhan. Mouth plugged, hurry up and stop talking!

Then he hugged the gift box and walked straight toward the dining room, urging, “Come quickly and eat! Dinner is served!”

He walked forward with his head down, rubbing his ears—they were burning hot!

Xie Yuzhan watched Bai Zhi’s retreating figure until he disappeared, then leisurely stood up. He smoothed out the slight wrinkles on his jacket, his eyes relaxed and gentle, carrying a hint of contemplation.

    Carrot-flavored candy?

It probably contained a lot of sugar.

Bai Zhi loved the gift very much. He kept the box next to him during dinner, glancing at it every now and then, watching it closely. He just avoided looking at Xie Yuzhan; he didn’t want his ears to burn again.

If they got any hotter, he’d be cooked!

It wasn’t until the meal was mostly finished that the heat completely subsided. He then remembered the matter he wanted to discuss. He looked up, cleared his throat, and said, “I heard Xie Jiahang was beaten up at a bar and lost a lot of face.

“Although I don’t know which good person did it, it’s very gratifying! Thank you, kind passerby!”

Hearing this, Xie Yuzhan asked, “Then do you want to know who was responsible for this?”

    Hmm?

Aha! Bai Zhi stared at Xie Yuzhan for more than ten seconds and suddenly realized. “You arranged it?!”

Xie Yuzhan curved his lips, his tone slightly deep. “You hitting him with a wine bottle only counts for you. For me, handling this matter to the current extent is barely acceptable. Bai Zhi—

“I will naturally protect my people. You cannot suffer those grievances, and you cannot take those losses.”

Bai Zhi listened, stunned, feeling a strange, indescribable sensation in his heart.

He opened his mouth, and it took him a while to say, “But we aren’t really married. I… I’m not your person either. Isn’t what you did a bit too much?”

Their relationship hadn’t reached that level of affection.

Xie Yuzhan liked Bai Zhi’s openness and directness. It was rare that he was brave enough to express his thoughts.

    Very cute.

He explained, “No matter how you define our relationship, legally and in the eyes of others, we are one entity.”

Bai Zhi thought carefully. That made sense. Others wouldn’t know the intricacies of their marriage.

He nodded, accepting Xie Yuzhan’s explanation. Perhaps the other man didn’t want to lose face?

However, even taking that into account, he was grateful for what the other man did. After all, no one knew CEO Xie was behind it, yet he still did it.

He had vented his anger for him.

He curved his eyes. “In any case, thank you. That cousin of yours definitely deserved a good lesson.”

A cold, sharp darkness flashed in Xie Yuzhan’s eyes, then quickly returned to normal. Xie Jiahang wasn’t the only one who deserved a lesson. Every single one of them would be dealt with. He wouldn’t let anyone off.

The matter from last night was finally closed.

As long as there were no special circumstances, Bai Zhi occasionally visited Lu Qinghe’s studio, went to see exhibitions with him, or had afternoon tea, but mostly he stayed home.

He tended to his plants, did his live streams, managed his online shop, cooked, studied, and had friendly exchanges with Xie Yuzhan.

And he got to eat small cakes!

These days were fulfilling, but he couldn’t help but occasionally slack off. Fans often asked him to stream longer, but he did it according to his mood, usually not exceeding three hours, prioritizing a relaxed and casual approach.

Being happy was the most important thing.

That day, Xie Yuzhan mentioned he would be back late. Bai Zhi ate dinner alone and started his live stream. When it ended, it was past eleven. Looking out the window, he noticed the night was dark and gloomy. He opened the window and reached out a hand—it felt heavy and damp.

He frowned. Was it going to rain?

He checked the weather forecast, and his pupils suddenly contracted. He almost dropped his phone. It was a torrential downpour.

Since transmigrating, he hadn’t encountered much rain. Now, just as summer was winding down, he was hit with such a huge surprise—not just rain, but a downpour!

A rain so heavy it could create rivers on the ground!

In his short rabbit life of less than two years, the thing he disliked most was rain. It would wet his fur, make foraging for plants harder, and most importantly!

He had been bitten to death during a rainstorm!

The water had flooded his burrow, forcing the rabbit to come out of the nest. Before he could find shelter, he ran straight into the wolf’s cold, vertical pupils.

It was the greatest trauma of his rabbit life.

It still left him with lingering fear.

Back in his room, he took a shower and lay in bed. Even though he knew he was safe now and no wolf would suddenly appear in the villa, the anxiety in his heart was uncontrollable. Huddling under the covers with his Pikachu plushies didn’t help.

Finally, unable to bear it, he got up again, pacing back and forth. When he heard the relentless drumming of rain outside the window, he shivered, his legs turning to jelly.

He looked out the window. A flash of lightning struck the floor-to-ceiling window, illuminating his pale face. This night…

The little rabbit might just perish here!

He gritted his teeth. No, being scared to death was too embarrassing for a rabbit. He’d rather be eaten. He had to think of something, think of something…

    Note
