Chapter 67 The God of Death

“Young man, come in. What’s wrong, are you cold?”

On Shangyun Star, inside an ordinary convenience store in Shangyun City, the friendly store owner greeted the young man standing at the doorway, inviting him inside.

The young man was tall and thin, clearly a homebody. His eyes darted away when spoken to, but he was quite handsome, and his shyness wasn’t off-putting; rather, it made people feel sorry for him.

For some reason, the young man seemed particularly interested in the live broadcast playing in the store—the handover ceremony between Shangyun and Xiayun Stars. His body was trembling, but his eyes never left the screen.

“Here, drink some hot water.” The bored owner pulled the strange young man inside, sat him down, and poured him a cup of hot water from his thermos using a disposable cup.

“Thank you,” Xiang Zhe said, clutching the cup. His trembling lessened slightly, but his eyes remained fixed on the screen.

“Interested?” The owner picked up his teacup and looked at the screen with him. “Actually, it doesn’t have much to do with us ordinary folks.”

He took a sip of tea, savored it, swallowed, and continued, “Well, I shouldn’t say that. I heard that after Han River takes over, they’re going to lower our taxes. It won’t affect my small business much, but the big businessmen will benefit greatly.”

“But when they benefit, they’ll have more drive to work, which means they’ll need more people. When more people earn money, my small business will also improve, don’t you think—”

The owner looked at the young man, chuckled to himself, and said, “Sigh, why am I telling you all this? You’re probably still a student; you don’t care about these complicated matters.”

“What, are you still cold?” Seeing the boy’s hands still shaking a little, the owner turned up the air conditioning by two degrees.

“Thank you,” Xiang Zhe replied. He was indeed cold, but the trembling wasn’t from the temperature; it was from tension. He only spared a glance for the kind owner before looking back up at the live broadcast on the screen.

The ceremony process was actually very brief. A military official gave a short speech—it was cold on Shangyun Star today, and the official seemed reluctant to say more. He Chen and He Hongsheng also just went through the motions, each saying a few words.

However, when He Chen spoke, the live stream was suddenly flooded with a dense barrage of comments: [Handsome] [So handsome] [Uniform temptation]… The owner had to turn off the comments to see the person clearly.

    “Hey, he really is handsome.”

“If I looked like that, and was a young general, wouldn’t I have young women and married ladies chasing me all over the street?” The owner fantasized, not noticing when Xiang Zhe beside him had stood up.

On the screen, the handover ceremony had reached the signing stage.

He Chen and He Hongsheng sat at the table signing documents. Behind them stood their respective adjutants and staff officers.

Xiang Heng was clearly standing behind He Hongsheng.

Xiang Zhe stared intently at Xiang Heng’s figure, his eyes unblinking.

    His brother had lost weight.

After exchanging and signing the documents again, streamers shot out across the ceremony venue. The owner also stood up and clapped. “Good, it’s done! I look forward to it, I really do! Huh, is there something else?”

    Mid-clap, the owner stopped.

After the streamers finished, the two parties should have retreated, but their extremely handsome new commander, He Chen, did not leave. Instead, he looked toward the military official.

The official seemed to have been reminded of something by him and spoke up: “Colonel Xiang Heng, please wait.”

Xiang Zhe immediately clenched his cup, not noticing the hot water splashing onto his hand, focusing only on the official’s mouth movements.

    The official said:

“Colonel Xiang Heng, you are accused of colluding with the Star Pirate group Fire Fox during your service in Han River, providing them with intelligence and acting as their protector for a long period. This is the detention order, effective immediately.”

    *

“Colonel Xiang Heng, you are under arrest. Please disarm, place your hands on your head, and come with us immediately.”

Inside the hall, the official announced. As the words landed, the crowd, who had been preparing to leave after the ceremony, stopped in their tracks.

“General?” He Hongsheng’s men looked at him, quietly asking for instructions on what to do next.

Xiang Heng was currently their man, and the accusation was intricately linked to them.

But the military’s detention order had been displayed; they couldn’t openly resist… This whole affair was happening in broad daylight, under the eyes of the public, leaving them no room for maneuver.

He Chen wanted exactly this: broad daylight and public scrutiny, giving He Hongsheng no operational space.

He looked at Xiang Heng, subtly signaling something with his eyes.

He Chen’s plan to corner He Hongsheng required him to first extract Xiang Heng from He Hongsheng’s side, preventing Xiang Heng from getting into trouble along with him.

Using this method was the safest and most feasible option. It was also because He Chen hadn’t been sure he could protect Xiang Heng from the He family before, but now he was certain he could keep Xiang Heng safe, even if it meant temporary imprisonment; he would eventually be released unharmed.

Brother Xiang, will you understand? Can you accept this?

He Chen watched Xiang Heng nervously.

Xiang Heng understood. He looked at He Chen and curved his lips slightly.

He Chen unconsciously curved his eyes as well.

It was a knowing smile, a sigh of relief, and a reunion after a long separation.

He Chen turned back to the military official. The official raised his hand, and a small squad immediately approached Xiang Heng with handcuffs.

He Hongsheng, however, seemed to have decided not to argue with the military. He turned and started walking out.

Only as he passed Xiang Heng did he pat Xiang Heng’s shoulder—this action wasn’t strange, and no one stopped him. But in the next instant, his arm moved down, and he suddenly patted Xiang Heng’s pocket. “You didn’t use that thing, did you?”

After saying this, he walked away without looking back.

He Chen frowned slightly. From a distance, he couldn’t hear what He Hongsheng said, only seeing that Xiang Heng’s expression was off as he looked down at his own clothes.

As He Hongsheng left, the people in the hall also began to disperse under the intentional guidance of He Chen’s subordinates.

He Chen started walking toward Xiang Heng, but Xiang Heng suddenly looked up. “Don’t come over!”

    “Brother Xiang?”

    “Evacuate, quickly!”

He Chen frowned, glanced at Xiang Heng’s expression, and quickly gave instructions to his subordinates: “Evacuate everyone!”

“You found it?” He Hongsheng’s sinister voice came through Xiang Heng’s earpiece.

“The bomb I placed at He Chen’s residence this morning didn’t explode. You tampered with it, didn’t you?”

“I underestimated you,” He Hongsheng sneered.

“However, I have one virtue: I never put all my eggs—no, all my bombs—in one basket.”

“It’s a pity. You had a chance to discover it if you had actually absorbed that blood crystal. Haha, you love acting? Go act! Go perform with your old friend underground!” A cackling laugh came through the earpiece, then abruptly cut off.

“Brother!” On another channel, another voice rang out, panicked and helpless.

“Eh.” The store owner subconsciously responded, then looked strangely at Xiang Zhe. “No, young man, there’s a bit of an age gap between us.”

As he spoke, he saw Xiang Zhe standing motionless, staring at the screen like a stone statue, and realized the word “Brother” wasn’t meant for him.

“Which one is your brother?” he asked, then suddenly gasped, becoming tense: On the screen, Xiang Heng, the one who was supposed to be “immediately arrested,” suddenly drew a dagger from his lower leg!

The owner thought he was going to resist arrest, but instead, he quickly stabbed the knife into his own abdomen!

What was he doing? Did he commit a crime, know he couldn’t escape, and intend to kill himself?

But it didn’t seem quite like that. Through the screen, the owner vaguely saw him moving quickly, digging something out of his body, getting blood all over his hand.

“Brother!” The young man stammered the word again.

Then the owner heard a sound from the inconspicuous earring on the young man’s ear: “Scan for me!”

“Okay!” The young man trembled, opening a virtual screen. He tapped rapidly, and a complete, transparent human figure appeared on the screen.

From one side of the figure’s abdomen, a strange, rope-like object grew, rapidly drilling upward into the body.

Damn, the owner shivered. “What is that?”

“I-I don’t know.” The young man looked like he was about to cry, his fingers shaking even harder, yet it didn’t affect his speed. He pulled up another interface. The screen displayed “Comparing,” and then a line of text flashed: [God of Death M6-1 Biological Bomb]

The young man stammered out the words on the screen: “…Biological bomb. Once activated, the detonation device automatically attaches and enters the body. Normal detonation time, one hundred, one hundred twenty seconds. If, if the device is damaged, it automatically detonates.”

“Brother, what should I do?” Snot and tears streamed down the young man’s face. The owner stared blankly, instinctively reaching for the tissues on the table.

Then he heard a voice from the “earring,” indescribably calm and steady: “Xiao Zhe, don’t look.”

Oh my goodness, the owner felt distressed too, and looked back at the screen, trembling.

On the screen, the colonel’s hand was still operating something in his abdomen. The owner couldn’t see clearly, but watching his hand covered in blood, he couldn’t help but tense up—he felt the pain just by watching.

The owner couldn’t see clearly, but He Chen could.

He had already sprinted toward Xiang Heng, pressing him onto a chair. One hand pressed against the continuously bleeding wound, and the other grabbed the bomb encased in the ice-blood crystal.

    “Wu Chuan!” He Chen roared!

Wu Chuan, the bomb disposal expert at Han River Base, rushed over immediately. His eyes sank when he saw the bomb. “Commander—”

    “Disarm it!”

    “Yes!”

Wu Chuan took out his tools, starting with cutting the blood crystal.

“It’s too late,” Xiang Heng said calmly to He Chen.

“It’s not too late!” He Chen grabbed the dagger that had fallen from Xiang Heng’s hand, cut open his clothes, stared at the bloody hole in his abdomen, and gritted his teeth. “Bear with it.”

He said this, then inserted his finger into the bloody hole, grabbed the extremely thin “rope,” and began to pull it out.

Xiang Heng winced in pain, clenching his hand, but managed a smile. “Will you let me go? You’re pulling my intestines.”

“I’ll let you pull them back later.” He Chen’s voice trembled slightly, but his hand was steady and firm, ruthlessly and single-mindedly pulling the object out.

“This isn’t right, is it…” Inside the convenience store, the owner no longer dared to look at the real person, instead watching Xiang Zhe’s projection, muttering.

In the projection, the fuse inside the transparent human figure paused for a moment when it was first grabbed, but then continued to grow inward with all its might…

“No, leave quickly.” A mouthful of blood surged from Xiang Heng’s mouth, and his sweat-soaked body slid down from the chair.

“Yes, it is!” He Chen supported his body with one hand, his eyes red as he wrestled with the thing inside Xiang Heng’s body. “It must work.”

But he couldn’t use too much force; it would break the thing. He had to, he had to go slowly. Damn it!

“Thirty seconds left. Go, listen to me.”

Xiang Heng trembled, grabbing He Chen’s hand and pushing it away.

“I was too greedy, I exposed a flaw,” Xiang Heng said, his body convulsing. His fingernails nearly dug into He Chen’s flesh. “I’m sorry, Xiao Chen, I’m sorry…”

    His consciousness began to blur.

“Forgive… me. My… my brother… I leave him to you.”

“No!” He Chen knelt on the ground, his fingers still digging between Xiang Heng’s blood and flesh, persistently pulling the fuse outward. “Just hold on a little longer, just a little…”

“Stop, Commander,” Wu Chuan said, his lips trembling. “It’s too late, truly too late. You’re causing Instructor Xiang too much pain like this.”

“Shut up! You continue!” He Chen commanded stubbornly.

“Are you going to… drag everyone… to death?” Xiang Heng stared at He Chen, speaking intermittently.

He knew He Chen’s weakness too well, and his strike was too precise.

He Chen’s face turned pale, and his movements paused for an instant.

The look of pain on Xiang Heng’s face eased. He gathered two parts of his consciousness and looked at Lu Changqing and Ning Tian, who were standing guard, nodding toward them.

It was as if he was saying: I leave it to you. Now, and in the future.

Lu Changqing nodded back at Xiang Heng, reached out to He Chen, and released his full mental power, controlling He Chen’s movements and quickly turning him around.

In the same second, Ning Tian, his face pale, directed the soldiers who were already prepared to push the explosion isolation device over, surrounding Xiang Heng. Then, without stopping for a second, he pulled Wu Chuan and ran for their lives with everyone else toward the distance.

“Boom!!” The sound of the explosion echoed behind them.

The isolation device worked. Some people were affected by the shockwave, but no one was seriously injured.

Ning Tian knelt on the ground, hot tears welling up, which he quickly wiped away. He silently stood up and looked back toward the source of the explosion.

He Chen also knelt on the ground, but his face was expressionless.

“Are you alright?” Lu Changqing, who had shielded him, reached out to help him up, but He Chen stood up first.

    “Senior Brother, go back first.”

He said indifferently, not looking back like Ning Tian, but striding toward the hall exit.

His steps grew larger and faster.

“Where are you going?” Ning Tian couldn’t help but remind him through the earpiece. “You can’t appear there!”

“I won’t.” He Chen got into the waiting hovercar and coldly ordered takeoff.

    *

“General, are we just leaving like this?”

“That Xiang Heng, did you discover his problem long ago?”

In the convoy of Ping Shan Base, inside the most central hovercar, a subordinate officer questioned He Hongsheng.

“Change the route.” He Hongsheng ignored the questions, instead commanding with a tense face.

“General, this route is the shortest and safest, and we have our people monitoring the ground the entire way,” the person responsible for his defense couldn’t help but speak up.

“Thinking of disobeying orders? Then go die,” He Hongsheng said flatly.

“Subordinate wouldn’t dare!” The subordinate didn’t dare to say more and carried out the order, making the convoy change routes.

The car fell silent. No one dared to speak again, and He Hongsheng ignored them, closing his eyes.

The feeling of unease that had been nagging him dissipated considerably.

He had a strong intuition that He Chen would use today’s opportunity to make a move against him, but he wasn’t afraid. He Hongsheng was not a coward.

No matter how capable He Chen was, he couldn’t steal intelligence that had just appeared in his mind. No matter how much preparation he made, he couldn’t stop him from temporarily changing his itinerary.

“General, the road ahead is blocked. There’s a traffic accident,” a subordinate reported just then.

He Hongsheng suddenly opened his eyes. The feeling of unease abruptly returned. “What kind of accident?”

“Two civilian hovercars collided. It looks like they crashed a while ago.”

“Go around them,” He Hongsheng said after a half-second hesitation.

    “Left or right?”

“Left, 45 degrees up to the left.” He Hongsheng followed his instinct, randomly stating a number.

“General, there is no air route there—”

“Do as you’re told!” The officer who had just been reprimanded spoke up on He Hongsheng’s behalf.

“Yes!” The driver gritted his teeth and drove the hovercar into the dark zone.

The “black route” had no accurate navigation or obstacle avoidance warnings. The driver had to proceed like a blind man, relying on his sense of direction.

However, he was philosophical about it. If he drove and crashed, he would die. If he disobeyed, he would also die.

If he drove, he might not crash, after all, the port wasn’t far.

A glimmer of hope rose in the driver’s heart.

Just then, the car body shook, and the driver felt the steering wheel momentarily slip from his grasp.

“What happened?” He Hongsheng frowned, sitting up straight.

“It seems we hit something…” The driver said, slowing down.

He was already like a blind man; a blind man couldn’t go fast, feeling like cliffs were everywhere.

But as he slowed down, something outside shot toward him extremely fast!

    A bullet!

It was a bullet, a armor-piercing round. The second the driver realized it, he had already lost consciousness forever.

Before the people inside the car could react, there was another impact. This time, the car door was breached.

A person in black armor and a mask climbed in like a demon, quickly throwing out the first person near the door, disarming the second person’s gun, and hugging the car ceiling to avoid the bullets fired from the back row. Something sprang from their elbow, slashing across the middle row of seats.

He Hongsheng’s gun-holding hand clutched his throat. Blood flowed profusely, gushing out between his fingers.

Less than three seconds had passed since the black-armored person appeared. The people in the car hadn’t even reacted, and none had noticed He Hongsheng’s injury.

They were still struggling in the confined space to track the black-armored person’s movements, trying to shoot or at least evade this sudden God of Death.

    “Bang!” “Bang!” “Bang!”

He Hongsheng frantically pulled the trigger, even though he wasn’t aiming at anything.

Amidst the gunfire, the hovercar spun out of control and plummeted. The slaughter continued. When a magazine was emptied and the gun barrel drooped weakly, the car was filled with corpses, except for the black-armored person.

The God of Death wielding a scythe.

The “God of Death” spun a dagger in their palm, slicing He Hongsheng’s gun-holding wrist. Then, with the same dagger, they plunged it violently into He Hongsheng’s abdomen.

    And pulled it out.

One stab, two stabs, three stabs… On the countless stab, their hand fully submerged into He Hongsheng’s body, and their wrist suddenly jerked upward!

“Whoosh!” Using a single dagger, with immense force, they cut upwards, breaking through rib after rib, bloodying and splitting open He Hongsheng’s upper body, stopping only at the neck!

Internal organs burst out, and blood rained down.

Like a rag doll, He Hongsheng slumped down, silent.

The hovercar was still falling. The continuous “Drip—woo” alarm filled the air, but the black-armored person only heard their own breathing:

    “Hoo—” “Hoo—”

    Animal, animal-like breathing.

Live like a beast, and there will be no more pain…

Fingers clenched, pupils crimson, the black-armored person, half-covered in blood, struggled in the hell they had personally created, bloodlust and reason constantly alternating in their eyes.

“Commander, get out quickly, the car is going to crash!”

    “Commander!”

A series of increasingly urgent calls came through the earpiece. Reason briefly gained the upper hand. He Chen instinctively smashed out of the falling hovercar. A hidden hovercar immediately picked him up. “Commander—”

“Get out.” He Chen spat out three icy words.

The soldier driving the car changed color—not because of He Chen’s unusually fierce attitude, but because he felt a strong mental power shockwave!

    Rampage!

No wonder the Commander told him to get out; he was probably struggling to restrain his killing intent!

But the soldier absolutely refused to leave. He operated the hovercar, simultaneously forcing a landing and frantically shouting into the communication system: “Director Lu, Director Lu are you—”

“On your left,” Lu Changqing’s calm voice clearly came through the earpiece. “Open the door and give him to me.”

Before the hovercar could land, Lu Changqing reached out, pulled open the door, and directly pulled the blood-soaked He Chen into his mental domain.

    Note
