Doctor Lu Always Wants To Steal My Baby! Chapter 47
byChapter 47 The Junior Brother’s Lips
“Big Wolf!” The small body was nudged. Smelling the familiar scent, He Leyan suddenly turned his head and, seeing that it was indeed Big Wolf, happily hugged it tightly.
“Where’s Dad?” He quickly reacted and asked.
“Dad is here.” He Chen walked through the crowd of people offering thanks, striding toward him. He scooped him up and hugged him tightly. “Good boy, were you scared?”
No. But I was very worried about my clumsy Dad! He Leyan couldn’t speak, so he hugged He Chen with all his might.
He Chen sniffed his nose and frowned. “Where are you hurt?”
He smelled blood on He Leyan.
“I’m not hurt, I was helping Uncle bandage up.” Being held mid-air and checked from front to back by He Chen, He Leyan finally managed to speak clearly.
Only then did He Chen notice a man in a white coat bowing and greeting him. Beside him was a makeshift stretcher carrying an injured person.
He Chen nodded to the man and looked back at He Leyan. “You’re so young, you know how to bandage?”
“Young Master Leyan learns very quickly and bandages very well. He helped a lot!” the man in the white coat quickly said.
“Thank you. Just call him Leyan.”
“Yes, Commander He.” The man in the white coat added.
“You know me?” He Chen was surprised.
“I know you. You are the best!” The man in the white coat gave a thumbs-up.
“…Thank you.” He Chen felt that the people he met today were acting a bit strangely toward him.
But he didn’t think much of it. His gaze swept the hall, and he asked He Leyan, “Where is your older brother?”
“He’s with Uncle Ning, helping move the injured.” He Leyan replied.
He Chen felt relieved. Just then, he also saw He Moyan, who was indeed lifting a stretcher.
He Chen walked over, holding He Leyan, and stared at him, asking, “Are you hurt?”
He Moyan shook his head. Without saying a word, he scrutinized He Chen from head to toe. Seeing no major wounds and smelling no blood, he turned around and continued carrying the stretcher.
That brat. He can’t talk, but he’s quite capable of working.
He Chen watched his retreating back and sighed in relief again. Regardless, it was good that everyone was safe. However, speaking of “everyone,” He Chen thought of the Medical Institute side…
Just then, he felt a puff of air on his forehead. He turned his head. He Leyan was staring worriedly at his wound.
“It’s a small scratch, Dad is fine,” He Chen said. Feeling He Leyan struggling, he put him down. He was then pulled by He Leyan and forced to let a man in a white coat treat the wound and apply a piece of gauze.
“Did Dad see Papa?” He Leyan asked at this point.
“Not yet,” He Chen replied. “But Dad asked, and there was no major danger over there.”
“But Papa was hurt,” He Leyan was still worried.
“Papa was hurt?” He Chen frowned.
“I saw it there!” He Leyan pointed at the large screen.
The screen was live-streaming the disaster relief efforts. The image He Leyan saw had long since passed, so He Chen naturally saw nothing.
“How did Papa get hurt? Is it serious?” He Chen turned back, asking as he opened his terminal and tapped Lu Changqing’s name.
The call didn’t connect, but He Leyan’s little mouth chattered away, clearly and logically. “Papa saved an uncle in a wheelchair. The uncle was stuck in the restroom, and the roof fell. Papa protected the uncle.”
As He Leyan spoke, he clasped his hands over his head, demonstrating the “protection” posture, which was extremely vivid.
“Then where did Papa get hurt?” He Chen asked, walking outside while holding him.
“His back,” He Leyan said. “But Papa is fine. He went to save people again.”
“Okay. Dad will take you to see if Papa is alright—” As He Chen spoke, the ground beneath his feet trembled slightly, and the intercom system also rang. He frowned and put He Leyan down again. “I’m sorry, Leyan. There’s an aftershock, and Dad has things to do.”
He Leyan bit his lip. “Dad, don’t get hurt.”
“I won’t,” He Chen said firmly. “Big Wolf will stay and protect you.”
He Leyan shook his head again. “Leopard will protect me.”
Ning Tian’s snow leopard was indeed following He Leyan to protect him. He Chen said no more, kissed him, and strode away.
By the time He Chen finally finished his tasks and saw Lu Changqing, it was already night on Hanxiao Star.
Lu Changqing was stationed at the temporary shelter in the Hanhe Sanatorium. He was on a call. When he saw He Chen and He Leyan through the tent, he put a finger to his lips and shushed them.
He Chen understood and stopped outside the tent.
Lu Changqing turned his back and replied coldly to the person on the terminal. “The mineral vein was not exposed. I have other matters—”
“Did you interfere with Xia Zhenye’s case?” Lu Jingshan on the other end of the terminal asked.
“How could I interfere with military affairs?” Lu Changqing replied.
“The case was handled by the Patrol Bureau. It got mixed up with He Siyuan’s matter. You didn’t intervene?” Lu Jingshan asked.
“I’m not familiar with it,” Lu Changqing answered, as if it didn’t concern him. “If it’s related to the He Siyuan case, His Majesty probably personally supervised it. Why is Father concerned about such a minor figure?”
“Chu Yunlan came to me, asking me to pressure the Patrol Bureau to let the Xia family off the hook.”
“Why would His Highness trouble himself? His Blood Crystal allocation task has been delayed. If the Xia family is short one pair of chopsticks, others can eat a bit more. Isn’t that a good thing?”
“He’s been infatuated by that male consort sent by the Xia family,” Lu Jingshan said gloomily. “I think you are too.”
“Yes,” Lu Changqing sneered. “Everyone is infatuated. It’s good that Father is not.”
“Using the Xia family’s matter to set a good precedent for the noble families, letting them know that one less competitor equals more profit—Father’s goals will surely be achieved sooner.”
After Lu Changqing finished speaking, he ended the call, removed his mental isolation, turned around, and welcomed He Chen and He Leyan into the tent.
“Papa!”
He Leyan rushed in and hugged Lu Changqing’s leg. Lu Changqing picked him up. “Were you scared?”
He Leyan shook his head, but Lu Changqing still placed his hand on his back, covering him with his mental energy.
The child had been tense and exhausted all day. As soon as he was soothed, like a taut string suddenly slackening, he closed his eyes within two seconds and fell asleep in Lu Changqing’s arms.
…A Hypnosis Master.
He Chen scrutinized this Master… and his tall, straight back. “How is your injury?”
“I’m not injured.” Lu Changqing looked at the gauze on He Chen’s forehead.
“Leyan said you were injured. He saw it,” He Chen insisted, still staring at Lu Changqing’s back.
“Do you want to check?” Lu Changqing looked up at him.
“A check would be good,” He Chen met his gaze, feeling inexplicably lacking in confidence.
Lacking confidence about what? He himself had been checked by Lu Changqing plenty of times!
“I truly wasn’t injured. A beam did fall, but it got stuck just right,” Lu Changqing stopped teasing him.
“Then Senior Brother is being rewarded for his good deeds. Thank you, Senior Brother.” In the sanatorium, those in wheelchairs were He Chen’s former subordinates who had retired due to injury. He Chen’s thanks were sincere.
However, just speaking the words felt a bit thin.
“Who were you talking to just now, Senior Brother? Is there any trouble I can help with?” He Chen said, walking closer to Lu Changqing and carefully taking He Leyan from his arms.
“No trouble. I was talking to my father,” Lu Changqing whispered, touching He Leyan’s sleeping face.
Father? He Chen glanced at Lu Changqing. “You said your relationship with him wasn’t good. It seems fine, doesn’t it?”
Lu Changqing slowly raised his eyes. “Where do you see that it’s fine?”
“Didn’t he call to check on you?”
Lu Changqing smiled. “He was concerned about something else.”
He Chen frowned, realizing. “The mineral vein?”
“Shh.” Lu Changqing leaned in, pressing his finger against He Chen’s lips.
Their eyes met. The surrounding noise seemed to vanish. In each other’s deep eyes, they unexpectedly saw reflections of themselves.
A flash of lightning streaked outside the tent. He Chen snapped out of it and suddenly stepped back. Lu Changqing simultaneously withdrew his finger.
“Be careful of walls having ears,” Lu Changqing said calmly, the soft sensation lingering on his fingertip as he clenched his hand.
“Got it.” He Chen held He Leyan tightly, answering with an unsettled look. “It looks like it’s going to rain. Tents aren’t convenient. I’ll go hurry up the construction of the shelter housing.”
“Wait,” Lu Changqing called He Chen back. “I have something to tell you.”
“The negotiation team sent by the Pingshan Base happened to arrive today.”
“I know about that,” He Chen replied. “Let them hang for two days. I don’t have time for them.”
The Pingshan Base was the one being split in two. Negotiations should, by rights, take place at the Pingshan Base. He Hongsheng was anxious to send people here, undoubtedly hoping to stall He Chen’s progress and carry out small maneuvers within the Pingshan Base, such as transferring assets.
Commercial warfare is also war, requiring knowledge of the enemy and oneself. Lu Changqing’s professional team had arrived and was focused on assessing the Pingshan Base’s economic foundation. He Chen planned to organize a counterattack only after the facts were clear.
“That’s not what I wanted to say,” Lu Changqing said. “They also participated in the rescue today, and some people were injured and sent to my side.”
Participated in the rescue? He Chen was slightly stunned.
“They are quite… unexpected.”
“It’s not entirely unexpected,” Lu Changqing said.
“What do you mean?”
“Come with me.” Lu Changqing led He Chen out of the tent, turning left for a dozen meters to a relatively quiet camp where a small number of injured people were settled.
Standing at the entrance, He Chen understood the meaning of Lu Changqing’s words.
If it was this person, it was indeed not “unexpected” that he would help with the rescue.
However, He Chen’s expression was complicated.
Inside the tent, Xiang Heng seemed to sense something and looked outside.
Seeing He Chen, he clenched his fingers, stood up, and walked out of the tent.
Xiang Heng glanced at the gauze on He Chen’s forehead. He Chen stared at the bandage on Xiang Heng’s shoulder.
“Colonel Xiang has a laceration. His bones are fine,” Lu Changqing said from behind He Chen.
“I didn’t ask,” He Chen snapped back, holding his breath.
Then he looked at the brand-new Colonel epaulet next to Xiang Heng’s bandage and asked in a deep voice, “Is this the ‘new beginning’ you wanted?”
He frowned and stepped forward. “You—”
“Commander He, I hope you’ve been well.” Xiang Heng interrupted He Chen. “The weather was uncooperative today, and there are a thousand things to arrange after the disaster. Our brothers are also injured, so the negotiations will likely have to be postponed for two days.”
He Chen pressed his lips together, tightening the fingers holding He Leyan.
“Fine,” he said gruffly.
Xiang Heng nodded and looked at He Leyan in his arms, his voice unconsciously softening. “Is Leyan alright?”
“That is not Colonel Xiang’s concern,” He Chen said coldly, striding away with He Leyan in his arms.
Lu Changqing gave Xiang Heng a slight nod and followed He Chen’s steps.
“Don’t keep holding him. Find someone to accompany him to sleep first.”
“I like holding him!” He Chen hugged the cub even tighter, walking quickly through the camp.
“The exit is this way,” Lu Changqing stopped.
He Chen paused, changed direction, and walked out with his head down, his pace even faster.
It wasn’t until they were about to board the hovercar that he turned to Lu Changqing. “It can’t be real. He must be planning something.”
Lu Changqing nodded.
“Why does he have to be like this?” He Chen said again.
“Everyone has their own path.”
He Chen fell silent.
“Rest whenever you have time. I’m leaving first.” He sat in the hovercar and looked at Lu Changqing.
Lu Changqing touched He Leyan’s head in He Chen’s arms, but his eyes were on He Chen. “You too.”
As he spoke, he leaned in, reaching past He Chen to fasten his seatbelt. Then he stood straight, looking deeply into He Chen’s eyes. “Go. Don’t be anxious. Tomorrow is a new day.”
