Chapter 28 Wolf Ears (Part 1)

“Misterans?” He Chen lowered his voice, looking uncertainly at the two half-human, half-beast monsters facing off against the large wolf, crouched on all fours with ferocious expressions. He asked Lu Changqing, who had followed him.

“No, it’s beastialization.” Lu Changqing scanned the monsters’ bodies. Their—no, their upper bodies were completely wolf-like, resembling common gray wolves, but their lower bodies still retained some human characteristics.

Misterans did not have this form. They were either human or beast. While in human form, they might retain some beast traits, but they would not be half-human, half-beast like this.

Instead, severe mental power surges had a certain probability of causing uncontrollable beastialization in Warriors.

“Be careful. This kind of beastialization comes at the cost of burning life force, which drastically increases their strength. They only know slaughter and have no rationality,” Lu Changqing warned with a grave expression.

“Understood. Mo Yan and I will handle them. You and the big wolf retreat first and protect Le Yan,” He Chen said in a low voice.

“Can Mo Yan manage?” Lu Changqing asked.

“Stalling them for a while isn’t a problem. He’s a genius in certain aspects.”

As He Chen spoke, he glanced at the Snow Wolf. The Snow Wolf understood him telepathically and, without needing instructions, retreated with extremely light movements.

However, the moment it moved, one of the beastialized humans seemed to sense it, leaping up with a whoosh and pouncing toward it.

“Your opponent is me.” He Chen countered the movement with stillness, not a second too early nor a fraction too late. The instant the beastialized human lunged, he suddenly exerted force, striking the side of its neck with a punch. The monster’s body twisted for a moment, letting out a low snarl, and then lunged at He Chen again.

Its stark white fangs, dripping with viscous saliva, aimed straight for He Chen’s face!

This terrifying scene was the last thing He Leyan saw. Even after the big wolf carried him far away and Lu Changqing took him off the wolf’s back, his small face remained pale: “Dad—”

“Dad is fine.” Lu Changqing held the child close, his hand resting securely and powerfully on the child’s back. “Le Yan, listen to Papa. Dad is very powerful. No monster can defeat him.”

“He, he’s not powerful at all!” He Leyan’s eyes were red, and his lips trembled slightly.

“Shh, be good, don’t be afraid—” Lu Changqing patted him twice. Seeing it wasn’t working, he directly linked with He Leyan, entering his mental domain.

He Leyan was too young and too sensitive, like an amplified signal receiver. Any signal he received was stronger and the impact greater than for an average person.

Although Lu Changqing had just said he shouldn’t be overly protected, circumstances mattered.

Witnessing the scene just now, if he wasn’t comforted immediately, it could leave a permanent mark on He Leyan’s mental world.

But just as Lu Changqing linked with He Leyan, the Snow Wolf suddenly turned, its white fur bristling, and let out a fierce roar toward the lakeside.

For ordinary people, a mental link required undivided attention, but Lu Changqing was not bound by this. His gaze passed over the large wolf shielding them, and he saw what was emerging by the lake. His pupils narrowed slightly.

    More beastialized humans—two of them.

“Defense first,” Lu Changqing said calmly, tightening his embrace around the now-sleeping He Leyan.

The Snow Wolf understood his meaning. The young master was fragile; protecting him was the priority.

It suppressed the urge to attack, its ice-blue eyes fixed intently on the front, radiating a strong, violent aura of ice and snow.

If they were ordinary wild beasts, they would have tucked their tails and fled upon encountering such an aura. But the beastialized humans before them were different.

Beastialization had stripped them of all rationality, both human and animal.

Without any communication, the two beastialized humans rushed toward Lu Changqing and the Snow Wolf simultaneously from two directions! Their speed was extreme, their charge immensely powerful, like two heavy missiles locked onto their target!

The Snow Wolf swept its long tail, erecting a wall of ice in front of Lu Changqing, then swiftly lunged at the closer beastialized human.

The ice wall wouldn’t hold the other one for long; it had to finish this quickly!

Pushing off with its hind legs, the Snow Wolf met the monster. Its powerful jaws clamped down like a guillotine on the beastialized human’s throat, pinning it down, slamming it hard into the ground. It then quickly turned back toward the second monster, which had already crashed into the ice wall, biting its hind leg and violently flinging it away.

Before it could catch its breath, the first beastialized human scrambled up and lunged again. The Snow Wolf roared, shoving it away, and then stepped on the back of the second monster as it tried to crawl up. Immediately after, it let out a pained yelp—

The second beastialized human had used its claws to grip the wolf’s foreleg. Several metal spikes emerged between its claws, instantly piercing the wolf’s flesh and bone, restricting its movement. Simultaneously, the other monster turned back, its flesh already torn by the wolf’s bite, yet seemingly oblivious to the pain, and pounced!

Die! He Chen’s mental command had been for the Snow Wolf to try and keep them alive, but the wolf couldn’t afford that now. Enduring the pain, it raised its injured leg, trying to break free and counterattack. But the instant it lifted its leg, a black object struck the forehead of the monster pouncing on it with a sharp thud.

—Piercing through the ice wall, Lu Changqing had thrown a black dagger.

With the immediate threat gone, the Snow Wolf was free to deal with the opponent beneath it. Opening its jaws, it unleashed a torrent of ice power. Half of the monster’s head froze into a block of ice, and then, with the Snow Wolf’s teeth clamping down, *crack*! It shattered into pieces.

The Snow Wolf felt a surge of satisfaction.

But just as it did, Lu Changqing turned his head alertly—another beastialized human had emerged from nowhere.

Lu Changqing was protecting He Leyan with one arm, leaving only one hand free to exert force—he could still dodge with one hand. There was a tree behind him he could use for leverage, but Lu Changqing didn’t want to move too much and wake He Leyan.

So he chose a different way to meet the enemy.

It was an invisible, intangible, yet truly existing method: a stare-down.

Lu Changqing and the beastialized human’s blood-red eyes met for an instant. The mental domain he deployed immediately cut into and suppressed an extremely chaotic mental swamp.

For just a moment, the beastialized human’s movements froze.

That moment was enough. Lu Changqing raised his hand, and another black dagger, which he had somehow held ready, pierced the monster’s throat with a soft *thwump*, like a knife sinking into tofu.

This happened in a flash, making it look as if Lu Changqing merely raised the dagger, and the beastialized human foolishly offered its throat.

Then it slid down like a heap of mud.

“Watch out!” Just then, a warning cry came. Without the beastialized human blocking his view, Lu Changqing finally saw an iron spear whistling toward him!

A spear had no mental domain; he couldn’t freeze it. Dodging was already too late. At this moment, he could only…

In a flash of lightning, Lu Changqing switched hands to shield He Leyan on the safe side. His other hand, tucked in his sleeve, quickly covered itself with a layer of dark scales. Then, he raised his arm.

But in that instant, a massive black arrow slammed into the iron spear, narrowly knocking it off course.

Lu Changqing paused for a moment, silently concealing his palm, the scales vanishing. He looked at the “arrow” that had fallen to the ground—

It wasn’t an arrow, but a black python. After knocking the spear off course, it shook off the layer of ice power that had condensed on its head, spun dizzily on the ground for a bit, glared resentfully at He Chen who had thrown it, and then slithered back onto the shadow-like He Moyan, who was dressed all in black.

He Chen strode over, scanning the surroundings vigilantly, especially the direction the spear had come from. While maintaining his guard, he looked at Lu Changqing—specifically at He Leyan in his arms: “Are you two alright?”

Seeing He Leyan’s closed eyes, He Chen frowned.

“We’re fine. I gave him some comfort, and he fell asleep,” Lu Changqing explained.

“Thank you.” He Chen looked at him, his gaze deep.

    “For what?”

“Thank you for protecting Le Yan.” He had seen clearly that in the most dangerous moments, Lu Changqing had firmly protected Le Yan, even using himself as a shield.

“Le Yan is my child too,” Lu Changqing said. “And thank you for protecting us.”

“No thanks needed,” He Chen said, muttering softly, “He’s mine…”

“What?” Lu Changqing raised an eyebrow slightly.

“Nothing…” He Chen recalled the injured Snow Wolf into his mental domain and looked into the distance, frowning. “Why is it quiet now?”

“Do beastialized humans also know how to avoid danger?” he asked, puzzled.

“Generally, no,” Lu Changqing mused, looking at the old, poorly maintained iron spear. “But using a weapon for long-range attack suggests they might not be ordinary beastialized humans.”

“I’ll go check.” With He Moyan and Lu Changqing present to protect He Leyan, He Chen gave a quick instruction and tracked the direction the spear had been thrown from.

However, after circling the area, he found nothing. There were signs of footsteps on the ground, but the tracks vanished not far away.

“Come back. The Snow Wolf is injured, don’t take risks right now. I’ve already arranged for personnel to come,” Lu Changqing contacted him via terminal.

“Alright.” In truth, He Chen was confident that combined with the Snow Wolf, there was nothing he couldn’t handle, but he was concerned about He Leyan’s safety. If Lu Changqing had a way to deal with these people, it was better to let him handle it. This was his territory, after all.

His territory? He Chen frowned at the thought.

But before he could dwell on it, he sensed a gaze fixed on him. He quickly turned back, and a gray shadow flashed and disappeared at the edge of his vision.

    *

When He Chen returned to Lu Changqing’s location, Lu Changqing was holding Le Yan with one arm and examining the half-human, half-beast corpses on the ground with the other.

He Chen’s mouth twitched. He wanted to take He Leyan, but seeing the bloodstains on his own clothes, he refrained.

“If they were alive, would it have been possible to save them?” He Chen asked.

“Essentially no possibility,” Lu Changqing replied. “But the one who used the long-range attack might still have some sanity. The result isn’t certain.”

He Chen followed his suggestion and looked at the spear on the ground. The gray figure flashed before his eyes again, inexplicably drawing his attention. He had clearly seen it, yet found nothing when he pursued it…

“Let’s get in the car first,” Lu Changqing opened the hovercar they had arrived in and sat down with He Leyan. “The area is too large for easy tracking. I’ve arranged for people to seal off the area and search slowly. The priority is getting Le Yan back, and also—”

“And dispersing the crowd at the eastern campsite,” He Chen finished.

Lu Changqing paused, looking at He Chen: “And treating the Snow Wolf’s injuries.”

Although injury to the mental body was not the same as injury to the owner, the owner would still be affected, experiencing pain, agitation, fatigue, or other issues.

But He Chen’s nerves seemed to be made of iron. He appeared completely unaffected. He released the Snow Wolf into the back seat for Lu Changqing, then slid into the driver’s seat and started the hovercar.

Just before taking off, he realized something was missing. He glanced at He Moyan, who was dismantling the tent, and his expression froze: “Get in, idiot!”

He Moyan obeyed, holding the still-unpacked tent, and sat in the passenger seat.

“Next time, I’ll take you out properly,” He Chen said, feeling a bit guilty seeing him holding the tent that hadn’t been used once.

The young man hugged the tent tightly and suddenly spoke: “Twenty-seven thousand.”

    “What?” He Chen was confused.

“The tent, twenty-seven thousand.” He Moyan had seen the price when scanning the installation instructions.

“Twenty-seven thousand for what? Is it made of gold?” He Chen didn’t believe it. As he spoke, he met Lu Changqing’s calm gaze in the rearview mirror, paused, and muttered under his breath, “Extravagant.”

“It was a gift. I don’t know the price,” Lu Changqing explained.

As he explained, the hand resting on the Snow Wolf continued to supply mental power steadily.

    He Chen didn’t speak again.

Through the big wolf, he could feel the clear, comfortable energy emanating from Lu Changqing, an energy that made one instinctively want to draw close and seek more.

He Chen felt both comfortable and inexplicably awkward, so he kept his eyes straight ahead, looking focused on driving.

He Moyan, however, was unusually talkative—though expressionless and toneless, he was stubbornly persistent: “Twenty-seven thousand. I retrieved it.”

“Yes, you’re amazing,” He Chen praised, feeling a little ashamed. He blamed himself for being too stingy, which had warped the child. “Safety first next time.”

    He Moyan fell silent.

Twenty-seven thousand, equivalent to two years of his tuition.

Retrieving it counted as money he earned.

This money could cover his tuition, allowing him to drop out. Perfect.

As he calculated, a black python with gold threads slithered across his body, becoming inexplicably vigilant. Its tongue flicked threateningly toward Lu Changqing.

Lu Changqing, holding He Leyan with one hand and embracing the big wolf with the other, met the black snake’s vertical pupils with a calm gaze. For some reason, the black snake suddenly softened and slumped onto He Moyan.

He Moyan looked back at Lu Changqing.

“Your mental body is very unique,” Lu Changqing said calmly, concealing the faint vertical line deep within his pupils.

    *

That evening, Lu Changqing worked late and didn’t return home until very late. When he arrived, He Chen was pacing the living room, holding He Leyan.

Seeing Lu Changqing return, He Chen immediately asked about the search results. Lu Changqing informed him that even large-scale infrared searches had found nothing.

“Did they just vanish into thin air?” He Chen frowned.

“I’ve had the surrounding area sealed off. As long as they’re still here, we’ll find them eventually,” Lu Changqing said.

He Chen opened his mouth, wanting to say something, then stopped.

“What’s wrong with Le Yan?” Lu Changqing looked at the child in his arms.

“He had a nightmare,” He Chen said. “He’s fine when I hold him, but cries if I put him down.”

Lu Changqing glanced at him, his gaze strangely fixed on the top of He Chen’s head for a moment before retracting. “How long have you been holding him?”

“Not long.” In truth, He Chen had been putting him down and picking him up, picking him up and putting him down, without paying attention to the time.

“Is he going to be okay like this?” He Chen asked, slightly anxious.

“He’ll be fine. Le Yan is very sensitive, so he’s easily disturbed. Don’t worry too much; he’ll be better after tonight.”

Lu Changqing said this, took off his coat, washed his hands, and prepared to take He Leyan from He Chen’s arms. But as soon as he lifted He Leyan away, the child squirmed uncomfortably, instinctively clinging to He Chen, his soft little face snuggling tightly against He Chen’s chest.

Lu Changqing let go. The sleeping He Leyan pressed against He Chen, and accompanied by He Chen’s breathing and heartbeat, his features relaxed again.

“I’ll keep holding him then.” Feeling the little one clinging tightly to him, as if… he couldn’t bear to be separated, He Chen protectively tightened his embrace around the child.

“Holding him is too tiring. Put him on the bed, and I’ll give him some comfort,” Lu Changqing said.

That works too. After holding him for so long, even arms made of alloy were starting to ache a bit.

He Chen followed Lu Changqing’s instruction and placed He Leyan on the bed. He Leyan did indeed turn over and wrinkle his small face, but Lu Changqing took his hand and linked with him. Moments later, the child calmed down again.

Honestly, having a Therapist at home was wonderful.

“Thank you.” He Chen watched the sleeping He Leyan and thanked Lu Changqing in a low voice, then asked, “Was Le Yan often like this before?”

“More so before he turned one,” Lu Changqing replied.

“Thank you,” He Chen repeated, thanking him for the past.

“No need. You should wash up soon and sleep next to him. Sensing your presence will help him sleep soundly.”

Lu Changqing said this and stood up, but his steps paused strangely.

He Chen didn’t notice anything and looked at Lu Changqing, struggling with a thought: “Could I ask Senior Brother to sleep with Le Yan tonight?”

He felt that since Lu Changqing could comfort Le Yan, he must be more effective than himself.

“You accompanying him is best,” Lu Changqing said. “Le Yan was distressed mainly because he was worried about you, afraid you were hurt.”

    Worried about him?

He Chen recalled that when He Leyan woke up during the day, he had indeed checked him up and down several times. Later, he was also clingy, always staying close to him. He even saw the child waiting by the door after he took a shower, asking if he had been in there so long because of a mental power surge…

So, the child had been worried about him all along?

He Chen sat down by the bed, looking at the small, sleeping figure. His heart felt a mix of sourness and softness, an indescribable feeling.

Lu Changqing stood nearby, looked at the top of He Chen’s head again, and couldn’t help but ask, “Are you feeling unwell anywhere?”

“Me?” He Chen turned back, confused. “No.”

“No?” Lu Changqing paused, then suddenly reached out, touching the top of He Chen’s head… specifically, the gray-white wolf ears there.

    “Then what are these?”
