Chapter Index

Lu Ziming watched Jiang Xiao ahead enter the automatically closing cyan fireproof safety door. Thinking he couldn’t fall too far behind, Qian Juchen quickened his pace to follow. However, just as he reached out to grab the handle of the fire door, a very short exclamation and a series of thumping and banging sounds came from inside.

Qian Juchen instantly understood – not good, something in the stairwell ambushed Jiang Xiao. Was it a person? Or a zombie? He hesitated and withdrew his hand, beginning to look around.

Whatever was inside, his current task was not to rush in and die, but to prevent whatever was inside from coming out. Jiang Xiao’s life or death was unknown inside. If he was already dead or seriously injured, he would be the only remaining combat power. The stairwell was dark and cramped, certainly not conducive to his self-preservation. So, he needed to find a way to prevent whatever was inside, whether person or thing, from rushing out, and then find another route to go downstairs and escape.

“Ah, this should work.” Qian Juchen’s searching gaze suddenly lit up, and he ran towards a small pile of construction waste nearby.

There was a roll of leftover electrical wire there, just the right thickness to tie around the two fire doors. Without much thought, he grabbed the roll of wire and rushed back to the door, quickly and efficiently tying the door handles together securely.

When He Linglong and Jiang Juncheng simultaneously realized something was wrong inside the door, it was already too late. He Linglong tentatively pushed the door from the inside, only to find that she could only open a gap about a finger’s width. Looking out from the gap, she could only see the scene directly in front of the door, and the black electrical wire wrapped around the handles many times.

“That dog of a man, he’s pretty smart.” He Linglong gritted her teeth and kicked the door in frustration, then, without wasting any time, pulled Jiang Juncheng away. Since this wasn’t going to work here, He Linglong knew another location where they could lie in wait. The other side had blocked the door, which prevented her from confronting him directly, but also cut off his escape route. Now, to escape, he could only climb down the exterior of the building, using things like air conditioner units or drainpipes as footholds.

So, she and Jiang Juncheng only needed to block the only way down – the corner at the bottom of the building – to catch him.

He Linglong was full of confidence, leading Jiang Juncheng downstairs. Before the disaster, this building was an empty building waiting to be rented, so there were no living things inside. The front door on the first floor was locked, and the windows were protected by anti-theft bars. So He Linglong led Jiang Juncheng directly to the second floor. The situation was similar to what Lu Ziming and Zhou Yuanyuan encountered when they fled, the second floor had only the bathroom at the corner with a horizontal air vent without exterior bars. That width… it just so happened that neither of them was fat, otherwise they would definitely be stuck in the window and unable to get out.

Unlike Lu Ziming and Zhou Yuanyuan, He Linglong, who had often done special training in this area during her training camp days, did not need to use hanging curtains to escape. She was agile, as if doing obstacle training. With one hand on the wall, half of her body had already skillfully climbed out of the window in less than two seconds, and even left half of her body inside to help Jiang Juncheng, who had less mobility, for support.

Then she climbed out of the window and supported Jiang Juncheng from outside. The two of them descended to the alley on one side of the building almost effortlessly. He Linglong poked half of her head out and looked up at the exterior wall of the building. Sure enough, Qian Juchen was carrying his compound bow on his back, sticking his butt out as he slowly climbed down the drainpipe.

Qian Juchen, while climbing, was secretly rejoicing – luckily this building was only four stories high, otherwise, he wouldn’t dare to climb down the outer wall without any protection, even if he had twice the courage.

“Hiss, this pipe is plastic, will it not be able to withstand my weight at some point?”

Qian Juchen climbed while weighing the situation in his mind, and his back was already covered with a thin layer of sweat.

He Linglong at the bottom of the building almost laughed out loud when she saw that the other party hadn’t come down yet – his posture, and his snail-like speed, wasn’t he offering himself as a living target?

“Come on, Heaven is helping me.” He Linglong pulled out her dagger from the side of her calf, took a step forward, and her entire figure was revealed from the corner. This startled Qian Juchen, who had been particularly cautious, and he caught the sudden change in the corner of his eye.

He was so frightened that he shuddered, turned his head to look in the direction of his peripheral vision, and just happened to meet He Linglong’s devilish smiling face. All the muscles in his body tensed up, and his toes, which were supposed to step on a foothold in the next step, slipped uncontrollably. He almost fell down with the force of the fall, but still managed to pull himself up with the strength of his arms.

He had already climbed to the third floor, but there were still nearly eight meters from there to the ground. If he fell from there, he might not die, but he would definitely break his leg. He was so stimulated by that just now that he felt cold all over, but he did not stop or climb upwards in the opposite direction, but quickly climbed down twice, wanting to catch the woman below by surprise before she attacked him.

However, how could He Linglong give him that kind of opportunity? Almost as soon as the other party moved, He Linglong predicted and threw the dagger in her hand towards Qian Juchen.
