    Chapter 48

“Men’s business, women should stay out of it!” Meng Qinghua, irritated, lost his patience for placating women, coldly pulling his hand away.

“…” Having been snubbed, Bian Chunxue awkwardly withdrew her hand, rolling her eyes at Meng Qinghua when no one was looking.

Did he really think she couldn’t live without him? If the situation weren’t so dire, why would she bother sucking up to this useless nobody! Hmph! Thinking this, Bian Chunxue also distanced herself from the men in a huff, going to sit on a waiting chair.

“Why is it so quiet upstairs?” Fang Jun, who had been busy bandaging Zhang Biao’s wounds, was the first to notice something amiss. When the sounds from upstairs died down, he realized that those who had gone up had been silent for quite a while.

“Probably sleeping! They have everything they need up there. Unlike us bunch of old men crammed in this broken hall without even a recliner. Damn it, this sucks.” Sun Qi wiped the blood from his hands on his pants, reached into his pocket, and pulled out a crushed yellow cigarette pack.

“Sleeping? At a time like this?” Dai Liang stood next to Fang Jun, exchanging a look with him, also somewhat suspicious.

“Could they be up to something?” Huang Wei stood up from the floor, frowning. “How about I sneak upstairs to check it out?”

Dai Liang patted his shoulder: “Then let’s go together. If anything looks wrong, we’ll run back down!”

Fang Jun also had some concerns, but he had to stay with the injured Zhang Biao, so he nodded to the two of them: “Then be careful. Go ahead.”

Seeing that everyone had moved to the adjacent decorating company, the last to leave, the woman in black, used a dagger tied to her leg to cut the ropes in the room. She then locked the room door and leaned out of the window, raising her gun and firing at a corner of the glass door on the first floor of the dental hospital.

The corner of the glass shattered, cracks spreading like spiderwebs across the entire pane. The zombie horde, unaffected, continued ramming the door, immediately shattering the outer layer of broken glass…

In the lobby on the first floor, everyone was crowded near the entrance when they heard the gunshot. At the same time, there was the sound of impacts and shattering from the door, scaring them into retreating further into the lobby.

Huang Wei and Dai Liang, who were sneaking upstairs, heard the gunshot and quickly retreated back down the stairs.

“Wh-what happened?!” Sun Qi, with an unlit, flattened cigarette still between his fingers, instinctively ducked his head and ran into the lobby when the sound went off.

Clearly, no one in the lobby understood what was happening.

“Damn it! That damned woman! She’s trying to kill us!” Zhang Biao, as the de facto leader, was quicker to react. Seeing that one layer of the double-paned door had shattered, combined with the gunshot, it wasn’t hard to guess who was responsible.

But even if his guess was correct, it was too late. Just as he widened his eyes and gritted his teeth, voicing his suspicion, a second shot rang out from outside.

    “Bang!”

The next second, the packed zombies burst through the last layer of glass, tumbling in like a human wave covered in broken glass.

    “Fuck!!”

    “Ah—”

A dozen or so people instantly fell into chaos, fighting and scrambling towards the second floor…

Everyone on the second floor had already moved, even the woman in black had nimbly climbed out of the window and quickly scaled the outer wall to the second floor of the decorating company. By this point, everyone she had protected, except for Mei Ting, who was unconscious and had little chance of survival, had moved to a relatively safe room.

Arriving on the second floor of the decorating company, it appeared to be one of their company’s conference rooms. After a quick tidy-up, everyone sat down to rest. The woman in black, to prevent anyone from the first floor from climbing in through the windows, leaned out of the window, constantly raising her gun and keeping watch, observing the situation there, watching as the zombies that had previously swarmed the door gradually squeezed their way in. It was clearly impossible for hundreds of zombies to squeeze into the first-floor lobby through the broken door at once, so there was crowding and trampling. But since zombies didn’t have pain feedback, the zombies outside continued to squeeze in regardless, like on a subway car during rush hour in a big city. Even if the people inside were already packed like sardines, those at the door still persistently used every means to squeeze themselves in.

    “Oh my god!”

“Help, help!!” The first-floor lobby of the dental hospital was now a scene of wailing and screaming. Everyone ran and fled towards the second floor, some unlucky ones tripping and falling, watching as the people behind them pushed them aside and ran up the stairs, leaving only a fleeing back view.

“Wa-wait for me!!!” Those who were knocked down, those who were pulled aside, those who fell to the ground and tripped others as well… it was a complete mess. And that useless person who fell wasn’t anyone else, but Meng Qinghua, who had previously been acting like a boss, giving orders.

The bosses’ physical strength was no match for their underlings, so they were naturally squeezed to the back by the group of guys who were busy fleeing for their lives.

However, in just a moment, the zombies that had squeezed through the door lurched toward the people in the back.

The first to be caught in the middle of the zombies and torn apart was, of course, the injured Zhang Biao. At the first moment the glass door shattered, Fang Jun grabbed Zhang Biao next to him and threw him towards the door, turning to run to the second floor.

“Fuck you, Fang Jun!!” The dazed Zhang Biao never imagined that the first person to betray him at such a time would be his most trusted underling, Fang Jun. He was the one who had diligently and fawningly bandaged his wounds just now. Truly, you can never know what’s in someone’s heart. In the blink of an eye, the other party had decisively thrown him to the zombies.

He had personally arranged for Fang Jun to work under Meng Qinghua. Afraid that he couldn’t afford rent, he had even let him live with him for free. All of this was because they came from the same village, and he, as the older brother, wanted to take care of the younger guy, a few years younger than him, in a foreign land, so he always gave him the green light.

But he never expected that the “reward” he would receive in the end would be like this.

Before being completely surrounded and torn apart by the zombies, Zhang Biao’s last thought was—indeed, if you’re going to be a bad person, be thoroughly bad. Being kind never ends well.
