    Chapter 23

Lu Ziming and the others in the parking lot ran out almost as soon as the sound subsided. Fortunately, there were considerable gaps between the vehicles parked on the edge of the parking lot and the walls. As long as they watched their step and didn’t trip, they could run straight to the corner on the edge through rows of parking spaces.

Zhou Yuanyuan, carrying the weapon Lu Ziming had made, led the way. Dai Qianya, with Jin Shengzhe on her back, followed behind her. Lu Ziming, carrying a backpack and weapons, brought up the rear. But after running two steps, fearing that the zombies behind would stop at the entrance and exit, she could only run in the opposite direction to the two women. She reached the fire door again and pulled it twice.

The continuous sound accurately attracted the zombies in front of the horde towards Lu Ziming. Lu Ziming’s fingers were icy, and she stared at the zombies running towards her, swallowing subconsciously.

In a moment that felt like an eternity, seeing the zombies had reached a position less than twenty meters away from her, Lu Ziming finally took off running.

Fortunately, Lu Ziming’s tactic of delaying her escape to attract a large number of zombies caused the hundreds of zombies that gathered with the sound to be squeezed into a mass on the open roadway of the parking lot. The faster, more agile zombies were blocked by the others. Thus, the zombies, acting entirely on animalistic instinct, began to tear at each other. They were all eager to tear apart the zombies in front of them, and some of the stronger ones even tore off the entire arm of the zombie in front.

The zombies swarmed in, as if stirring up a black, foul-smelling wave on the floor of the parking lot.

Lu Ziming quickly ran forward, finally squeezing through the gaps between the cars before the zombies could block her in the open space in front of the fire door. She used the zombies’ lack of intelligence to block a large number of them in the narrow spaces between the vehicles and between the vehicles and the walls. The more eagerly they tried to overcome the obstacles, the more they squeezed the zombies in front into distorted shapes.

Zhou Yuanyuan, who had been leading Dai Qianya all the way to the outermost part of the parking lot, of course heard the two loud, echoing closing sounds behind her. But once she ran out, she never stopped. After hearing the sound, she continued to sprint forward, glancing back at the fire door direction to slow down.

When she realized that Lu Ziming was acting as bait to attract the zombies’ attention, her chest tightened, and her eyes began to heat up. But in the end, she gritted her teeth and did not let the tears of momentary emotion fall. She and Dai Qianya had to cherish the escape opportunity Lu Ziming had painstakingly created. The sooner they reached the edge of the parking lot, the greater the chance of survival for all three of them. Moreover, she was also responsible for clearing the sporadic zombies remaining at the parking lot entrance and exit. The clearer and wider the road ahead, the greater the chance that Lu Ziming, who was leaving later, would survive.

Finally, as Zhou Yuanyuan led Dai Qianya along the outermost passage of the parking lot towards the exit, they encountered their first zombie. This zombie was wearing an outdated blue-black Zhongshan suit on its upper body, black casual pants on its lower body, and a plaid peaked cap on its head. It was a thin, old man, stretching out withered hands, glaring with turbid eyes, and baring a foul-smelling mouth as it lunged towards Zhou Yuanyuan and the others.

For Zhou Yuanyuan, it was not her first time facing a zombie, and this time she was only facing an elderly zombie that was even thinner than her. Gaining some courage, Zhou Yuanyuan imitated Lu Ziming’s previous actions and swung a knife directly, aiming for the zombie’s neck.

But she completely overestimated her accuracy. Although she was aiming for the zombie’s neck, she directly hit the zombie’s head. The zombie staggered and fell to the side, collapsing to the ground.

Anxious, Zhou Yuanyuan didn’t have time to waste any longer, so she didn’t continue to slash at the old zombie on the ground. Instead, she directly led Dai Qianya past. Continuing to fight would inevitably delay their departure time. At this time, most of the zombies were attracted to the inside of the parking lot, and for the three of them, the only exit was the parking lot entrance and exit not far away. If they delayed any longer, more zombies might gather at the entrance and exit. If that happened, the three of them would be completely surrounded by zombies, like turtles in a jar.

So, she didn’t have time to pay attention to the zombie she had knocked down, and she charged forward without slowing down. Behind her, Dai Qianya, being a mother, always held tightly to Jin Shengzhe’s small feet, closely following behind Zhou Yuanyuan, dodging the zombies’ attacks.

Meanwhile, Lu Ziming, who had originally fallen behind, concentrated her mind and mobilized all the cells in her body in an emergency state, displaying the fastest weight-bearing running speed of her life. Finally, she caught up with the two women in front of her before their silhouettes disappeared around the corner of the entrance and exit.

The three, reunited and seeing victory in sight, could escape if they ran across the less than fifty-meter-long slope of the entrance and exit. However, at this moment, a burly black shadow suddenly appeared at the top of the slope, slowly moving as if searching for something.

Zhou Yuanyuan, running too fast, didn’t react immediately. By the time she realized what the black shadow might be, she had already rushed close to it.

Although she finally stopped, she still immediately attracted the attention of the black shadow, which was facing sideways towards the slope.

“Roar—” The black shadow twisted its stiff neck, and after letting out a low, unintelligible roar, it turned and lunged towards Zhou Yuanyuan.

Zhou Yuanyuan was less than ten meters away from the black shadow. In just a breath, the burly black shadow had rushed in front of Zhou Yuanyuan. Just as the black shadow was about to pounce and devour Zhou Yuanyuan, a hand reached out from Zhou Yuanyuan’s rear side, grabbing her arm and pulling her forcefully to the side. A long knife suddenly appeared in the space where Zhou Yuanyuan had been standing, piercing straight through the black shadow’s face. The tip of the knife met the black shadow’s gaping mouth, and after knocking out a few teeth, its momentum did not diminish. It pierced straight into the black shadow’s throat, breaking through the fragile bones and flesh of the back of its neck, creating a beautiful through-and-through wound.

Zhou Yuanyuan was still stunned in place with lingering fear. Lu Ziming, who had discarded her long knife, grabbed Zhou Yuanyuan with one hand and pulled the equally frightened Dai Qianya with the other, gritting her teeth and shouting in a low voice, “What are you still standing there for! Run!!” Then, she dragged the two women towards the outside of the slope.

Only after the three had run past the burly black shadow, and their figures had disappeared at the top of the slope, did the black shadow sway twice and fall to the ground with a “thump.”

At this moment, from deep within the slope, the sound of panting grew closer and clearer, and then the zombies that had just been trapped gradually revealed their forms in the darkness.
