    Chapter 2

Lu Ziming always believed in the saying “curiosity killed the cat,” so regardless of whether her colleagues in the office were joining the crowd to see what had happened, or whether there were women and little girls among the injured, Lu Ziming remained unmoved. She simply sat obediently at her desk and started her work.

Lu Ziming had accidentally broken her teacup earlier, so naturally, she didn’t have any water to drink. She unconsciously licked her lips, realizing she was indeed thirsty. Not only had she not had any hot water, but she had also ruined her cup. Really…

She raised her wrist to check the time. Fortunately, it was already past eleven. If she could just hold on a little longer, she could go buy water when she got off work at twelve.

Should she buy water first? Or a cup? While everyone in the office was completely absorbed by the accident downstairs, the usually indifferent Lu Ziming was actually considering whether to buy water or a teacup first.

“Everyone, come and see!!! The driver isn’t dead!!!!” Everyone’s curiosity hadn’t waned. Although they had retreated to their positions for fear of being caught by the boss, their attention was still focused downstairs. Upon hearing this, they immediately began to discuss it excitedly again and tentatively moved closer to the glass to look down.

    “What?”

    “Impossible…”

“The car exploded, how is that possible?”

“Yeah, could he still be alive?”

“Let me see, let me see.”

    “Hey, don’t push!”

However, the crowd’s discussion came to an abrupt halt the moment they saw what was happening below. Everyone gasped.

    “Hiss…”

“I… did I say something wrong?” Xiao Li’s voice trembled.

“Is… is that still a person?”

“Like that… can he still be alive?” Everyone hesitated, looking at each other and asking.

“Boss… Boss, he saw him.” Everyone’s mood turned to panic, but they still held their breath, observing the progress of the situation below.

“The boss is scared, he’s backing away…”

“Wait! Look at the security booth! That little girl actually woke up… She… what is she doing??? She’s biting the security guard’s hand! Hey, you little brat!! Don’t you know about gratitude! This is repaying kindness with evil!” Xiao Li’s trembling voice from before became firm with anger. He jumped up and down, shouting furiously.

“No, something’s not right, something’s definitely not right!! Quick, go downstairs!! The boss and the others are in danger!!” Another male director, He Shifeng, frowned, suddenly seeming to understand something, and said to the people in the office.

“Hey, are you alright…” Boss Wang Lin looked at the ‘driver’ staggering towards him and asked in a trembling voice. He wasn’t sure if the ‘driver’ in front of him could still be called a ‘person,’ or if anyone could really be injured like this and still be so ‘energetic’ as to walk towards him for ‘help’???

The shockwave from the explosion at the front of the car shattered the windshield, and the large pieces of glass that flew off severed the driver’s seat belt on the left side. This was why the driver was able to ‘escape’ from the driver’s seat, but in reality, the shattered glass shards had severed more than just the seat belt… they had also severed… half of the ‘driver’ in front of Wang Lin’s neck.

Wang Lin watched the blood constantly flowing down the ‘person’s’ neck in front of him, his palms already sweating from fear. He swallowed subconsciously, still backing away in terror. The key was that the massive wound made it seem like the ‘person’s’ entire head was about to fall off, but the ‘person’s’ movements weren’t hindered at all, only a little slower.

“You… you you you… don’t come any closer.” The more Wang Lin observed, the more he realized something was wrong. How could anyone be so injured and still move freely???

“Ah!!” Just as Wang Lin was sweating and backing away, a scream came from the security booth, making Wang Lin tremble and instinctively turn his gaze towards it.

He saw that among the two people who had just been rescued by the two security guards, the little girl, who was about six or seven years old and had been unconscious, suddenly woke up and, without warning, quickly turned her head and bit the hand of the young security guard who was squatting next to her, checking her injuries.

The young security guard screamed, and because of the piercing pain, he shook his hand hard, trying to throw the girl off, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t shake off the little girl who was biting his hand with the force of someone holding a grudge. However, if he didn’t shake the little girl off, the injury on his hand would be bitten deeper and deeper and become more and more painful. The young security guard gritted his teeth and pressed down on the little girl’s head with one hand, using all his strength to pull his bitten hand out. However, along with it, half of the skin and flesh of his palm was also bitten off by the little girl.

The hand, with its exposed white bones where it had been bitten, started bleeding in less than a second.

“Ah! Ah ah ah!! Ah…” The young security guard’s screams didn’t stop after he pulled his hand back, but instead, tended to intensify. Because of the piercing pain, the young security guard jumped up from the little girl’s side and hopped around in pain, while blood flowed down his hand, staining the small patch of cement ground beneath him red.

The older security guard next to him hadn’t even reacted to what had happened. Seeing the young security guard injured like that, he was immediately lost and panicked. He looked at the screaming young security guard and then at the little girl biting the young security guard’s flesh, half of his wits scared away, and he couldn’t even remember what he was supposed to do first. However, the little girl, who had just been laid flat on the ground by the two of them and had now suddenly woken up, slowly got up from the ground.

The young security guard looked down and saw the little girl getting up, and he was so frightened that he forgot about the pain. He gritted his teeth and ran into the guard room like the wind, and then locked the door from the inside.

Only the older security guard and the little girl were left facing each other. The security guard was trembling, too scared to move. Seeing the child approaching him step by step, he finally managed to take a step back, but his legs went weak and he fell to the ground with a ‘thump’.

“Don’t… don’t don’t don’t… don’t come any closer…” This older security guard’s name was Zhang Sheng. In fact, he was a super-distant relative of Boss Wang Lin. Hearing that he had a relative who had become a boss, he contacted Wang Lin through his relatives, wanting Wang Lin to arrange a good job for him. Back in his hometown, Zhang Sheng was known for being lazy, gluttonous, cowardly, and afraid of trouble. When he came here, he still couldn’t change his old ways. Wang Lin had originally thought that Zhang Sheng, being just over thirty, could find a decent job and have the opportunity to be promoted if he worked hard. Who knew that this guy was just a good-for-nothing who created trouble for Wang Lin after only working for a few days? In a fit of anger, Wang Lin put him in the company’s security team, which, to his surprise, suited the guy’s liking. He didn’t have to do much physical labor all day, and he could watch TV, eat chicken feet, and crack melon seeds during his shift. He even got a salary at the end of the month. Although it wasn’t even two thousand, it was enough for food and clothing. He didn’t have a fixed place to live and often stayed in internet cafes. When he was on duty, he would stay in the guard room. This guy was having a great time every day, but he didn’t expect to encounter such bad luck before he could even enjoy it for a few days. He trembled, propped himself up on the ground, and scooted backwards, verbally threatening the little girl who was acting like she had rabies. However, the little girl ignored Zhang Sheng’s threats and continued to approach him step by step…

A “bang, clatter…” sound startled Zhang Sheng. He turned around and saw a bloody ‘person’ lying in front of Wang Lin, who had come out to see what had happened. A red fire extinguisher had rolled to the side. He Shifeng was standing not far from Wang Lin, panting. It seemed that Wang Lin, who had been too scared to do anything but retreat, had been saved by the fire extinguisher thrown by He Shifeng.

On Zhang Sheng’s side, Zhang Sheng hadn’t even turned his head when he heard an angry roar next to his ear: “You little brat! Get out of here!!” Then, he felt a small gust of wind brush past his side. The little girl, who had just walked up to Zhang Sheng and opened her blood-soaked mouth full of minced meat, was ‘swished’ away.

The one who had swatted the little girl away wasn’t anyone else but Xiao Li, who had grabbed a mop. As soon as He Shifeng said he was going to save people, he rushed out. Fortunately, He Shifeng, who was running behind him, grabbed his collar and shouted angrily: “Are you crazy? Grab something to use as a weapon!” So he had grabbed this mop from the office supply cabinet. At this moment, he was holding the mop head with a posture that made it look like he was holding a bamboo sword, standing there, thinking he was dashing.

“Thank you… thank you thank you…” Zhang Sheng finally came back to his senses, knelt down and moved next to Xiao Li, gratefully bowing and kowtowing to Xiao Li.

“Hey, don’t be so polite, get up, you’re making me embarrassed.” Seeing Zhang Sheng’s sincerity in expressing his gratitude, Xiao Li finally dropped his cool pose and scratched his head in embarrassment.

“Xiao Li! She’s getting up again!!” He Shifeng, who was panting heavily, saw that one ‘unidentified creature’ had finally been dealt with, and half of his worries were gone. But when he turned his head, he saw that the little girl who had just been swatted away by Xiao Li’s mop pole was swaying and staggering to her feet again. He could even see a clear straight bruise on her forehead – the result of Xiao Li’s blow.

“Damn, she’s immortal!!” Xiao Li exclaimed in surprise, unconsciously retreating. While retreating, he didn’t forget to pull up Zhang Sheng, who had fallen to the side, and they stumbled back to He Shifeng and Wang Lin. At this time, everyone realized what was wrong that they had just noticed. The three people who had been in the car accident were certainly seriously injured, but they had all ‘come back to life’ like normal people. However, those who had ‘come back to life’ at this time… were probably no longer human. Because they had no consciousness or thought, only the animalistic instincts to eat and hunt. The only way to kill them was to smash their heads, like He Shifeng had just done. Gathering all these characteristics, the only thing that fit was a creature that could only be seen in movies –

“Zombies!” He Shifeng and Xiao Li looked at each other, and in fear, said in unison.
