HUFT Chapter 10
by Volare“Shut up, I, Chi Nan, have no relationship with your old Yu family. From today onwards, this is my mother’s house, please get out.”
Chi Nan didn’t know where he got the courage to say those words to Yu Jianguo’s mother. Although Yu Jianguo’s mother was still cursing, things were finally a bit quieter.
“How is my mom?”
“She has a bit of a fever. I just gave her medicine to bring it down. If it doesn’t break in three days, you’ll have to take her to the hospital.”
“Thank you, doctor.”
Chi Nan ran to the small tin box on the cabinet again, took out some money to give to the doctor. He often saw Yu Jianguo’s mother taking money from his mom, but his mom never said anything. So, Chi Nan knew there was money in there, and he took some out of the tin box to give to the doctor.
“I won’t take the money. Take good care of your mother.”
The doctor patted Chi Nan’s head, packed up his equipment, and prepared to leave.
“Thank you, doctor.”
Chi Nan saw the doctor to the door and ran back into the house to take care of his mother. Young Chi Nan didn’t know how to cook or take care of people. He just imitated his mother, cooking a little noodles. Because he couldn’t reach the stove, he had to stand on tiptoes to cook the noodles. If he wasn’t careful, the scalding hot water could splash on Chi Nan.
Chi Nan carefully ladled out the noodles and brought them to his mother.
“Thank you, Nan Nan.”
When Chi Ruyue saw Chi Nan like this, tears streamed down her face. She felt that she wasn’t worthy as a mother or as a daughter.
Chi Ruyue forced herself to eat two bites, and Chi Nan ate the rest. Chi Nan’s first reaction was that he wanted to throw up. He seemed to have put too much salt, and it was very difficult to eat, but he forced it down.
In the afternoon, Chi Nan was relieved because his mother’s fever finally broke. Chi Nan was happy for a while, but the fever came back in the evening. Chi Nan found the doctor who had seen his mother that morning, and the doctor told them to go to the hospital.
Chi Nan couldn’t get his mother to the hospital by himself, so the doctor helped him and took Chi Nan’s mother to the hospital. But when they got to the hospital, they had to pay the fees. Chi Ruyue had told Chi Nan where the money was when she was awake, so Chi Nan took all the money with him and paid the fees for his mother.
In the days at the hospital, the money flowed like water. In the end, the nurse told them that if they didn’t pay, they would be kicked out. Chi Nan had no choice but to call Yu Jianguo.
Outside the hospital, in the pouring rain, Yu Jianguo arrived with a pregnant woman. They weren’t there to give Chi Nan money, but to divorce Chi Ruyue. Chi Nan frantically begged Yu Jianguo to save his mother.
“I beg you, save my mother, we have no money.”
Little Chi Nan grabbed his father’s arm and shook it.
“Jianguo, hurry up, my parents are waiting.”
The woman next to him was clearly impatient. They were holding umbrellas in the rain, while Yu Jianguo threw down a few hundred yuan and left with the woman in a luxury car. Chi Nan was alone in the rain, completely soaked. He picked up the few hundred yuan. At that moment, he finally understood what his mother had said: his father was dead.
Later, his maternal grandparents heard about this and rushed over from the city overnight. Seeing their daughter, whom they had held in the palms of their hands, suddenly so haggard, the two elders were heartbroken. When Chi Ruyue saw her parents, she couldn’t control her tears any longer. The tears that she hadn’t shed when divorcing Yu Jianguo now burst forth in front of her parents.
Later, Chi Ruyue’s maternal grandparents took her to see doctors everywhere and even sold their house in the city to exchange for a small house. Chi Ruyue still couldn’t make it through and passed away after two months.
Chi Nan naturally couldn’t return to the Yu family, so he went back to the Chi family with his maternal grandparents. At that time, Chi Nan realized that his mother’s marriage to Yu Jianguo hadn’t been blessed by his maternal grandparents. Chi Ruyue even had a childhood sweetheart neighbor, but it ultimately failed. The two elders had even threatened to disown their daughter because Chi Ruyue had married Yu Jianguo without their permission. In the end, they still couldn’t keep their daughter.
Later, Chi Nan’s maternal grandmother couldn’t bear missing her daughter and also passed away two years later. Chi Nan had been living with his maternal grandfather, Chi Ye. Although Chi Ye didn’t talk much, Chi Nan could feel that they must have loved Chi Ruyue very much, and they extended that love to Chi Nan. Chi Nan learned a lot from Chi Ye and understood many things. Finally, after Chi Nan came of age and was admitted to university, Chi Ye passed away, transferring the house in City A to Chi Nan and leaving him an inheritance.
Perhaps because he dreamed of the past, Chi Nan didn’t sleep well that night. He even shed tears because he remembered the past, and he was restless even in his dreams.
The next morning, Chi Nan had dark circles under his eyes, and it was obvious that he hadn’t slept well. Today was also the last day of the May Day holiday, and classes would start again tomorrow. His roommates would also be returning one after another today.
After getting out of bed, Chi Nan first washed his face. He looked at his haggard face, yawned, and then continued to look at his phone.
[There was no thunder today, do you want me to play happy nursery rhymes?]
Uncle Fu had sent him the message at around ten o’clock, but he hadn’t replied.
[Asleep? Good night]
He had sent another message later. Chi Nan sniffled, feeling a bit sentimental. See, there were still people in this world who cared about Chi Nan, even if he was a stranger.
“Uncle Fu, I went to bed too early yesterday and didn’t see your message. Do you have to work today?”
Fu Chaoyun was just about to go to his sister Fu Shi’s house when he received the message, but the little friend’s voice sounded like he had been crying?
This thought formed in Fu Chaoyun’s mind.
[Are you feeling unwell? Your voice sounds a bit muffled]
When Chi Nan saw the message, he thought, so there really are people in the world who care about him more than relatives. What on earth was Yu Jianguo thinking? Did he think he was a big idiot? Did he think he was still the Chi Nan who had agreed to go to the amusement park?
“No, I just didn’t wake up this morning.”
Chi Nan quickly replied to Uncle Fu.
[See a doctor in time if you feel unwell. I have to go out, I’ll contact you later]
“Okay, Uncle Fu, you have to work hard to make money, don’t always think about slacking off.”
Fu Chaoyun heard Chi Nan’s voice message as he picked up his car keys and prepared to leave.
“This kid.”
Fu Chaoyun was a little helpless. It seemed that in Chi Nan’s mind, he had already become someone who slacked off at work and didn’t work hard. He should find time to explain himself to Chi Nan.
