Let it be, It’s Meaningless (Part 1)
Bai Yao’s condition was very strange.
Surrounded by darkness, Liu Yucheng couldn’t even tell if Bai Yao was still immersed in a nightmare or if he was truly awake, simply afraid.
He held Bai Yao with one hand and grabbed the blanket with the other, covering Bai Yao’s bare legs. “Don’t be afraid, listen carefully, it’s the footsteps of the night patrol security guard.”
Hearing this, Bai Yao did stop shaking so violently, but he still didn’t quite believe Liu Yucheng, and asked, “Do night security guards patrol inside the dorms?”
“Sometimes.”
Liu Yucheng told the truth, “I’ve run into them before. There’s a security guard surnamed Liu, and he patrols the dorms when the weather is bad. If you don’t believe me, you can ask around tomorrow.”
Bai Yao still clung tightly to Liu Yucheng’s pajamas, refusing to let go. Liu Yucheng felt flattered on the one hand, but also very puzzled on the other.
Because this wasn’t the first time Bai Yao had been like this. It had happened before when they rented a room outside. That night was even worse than tonight.
At that time, Liu Yucheng was completely shocked. The sunny young man who was always tough in front of others and had a touch of Social Cow-X Syndrome actually had such a vulnerable side.
Most likely, Bai Yao had experienced something bad as a child, maybe more than one thing. Then, these things seemed to have been turned over on the surface, but the adverse effects on Bai Yao had never disappeared.
It wasn’t appropriate to ask now. But if he waited until tomorrow, when Bai Yao had returned to normal, and then asked, Bai Yao would probably throw him four words: None of your business.
“Be good, lie down first.” Liu Yucheng coaxed him softly, “Don’t catch a cold.”
“You’re not leaving?” Bai Yao asked in a low voice.
“I’m not going anywhere.”
Liu Yucheng helped him tuck in the blanket, lying on his side and gently patting his back, “But I have to get up early to work tomorrow, so are you…”
Before he could say the words “don’t want me to leave,” Bai Yao turned over, facing away from him, and deliberately left a tiny gap between them.
“Whatever.” He said.
Liu Yucheng’s heart instantly turned cold – it seemed that Bai Yao had woken up, and he wasn’t hugging his waist like before.
…
After twisting around in bed for a long time, Bai Yao had no choice but to raise his head and coldly ask him, “Who told you to hug me? Let go.”
“I was just blocking the window cracks, and the wind gave me a headache.”
Liu Yucheng leaned close to his ear and murmured, “I wonder who I was doing it for, for a former boyfriend who doesn’t love me anymore.”
Bai Yao: “…”
Whatever.
If he wants to hug, then let him hug. He was too lazy to argue with Liu Yucheng in the middle of the night. The temperature in the room wasn’t high, and it was warmer to be close to each other.
A few minutes later, Bai Yao, unable to bear it any longer, raised his arm and punched Liu Yucheng hard.
“Damn it, are you annoying or what? If you rub against me again, I’ll break you, do you believe it??”
“…Sorry.”
The next morning, many students who had spent the night at internet cafes returned to the dorm one after another. The corridor wasn’t too noisy, but there was a constant stream of voices and footsteps.
“Huh? Why didn’t you turn off the lights? That’s such a waste of electricity.”
Yan Hao, with dark circles under his eyes and a strong desire to sleep, opened the door and entered the room, subconsciously saying this, and also waking up the two people in the bed.
Bai Yao hadn’t slept enough at all. He half-opened his eyes and saw Liu Yucheng fumbling under the pillow for a while before taking out his phone.
Liu Yucheng also let Bai Yao take a look at the time on the phone, meaning it was past seven o’clock, and he had to get up.
Bai Yao gave a soft “mm” as a default, then closed his eyes and continued to sleep.
Yan Hao was standing by his desk, taking off his shirt. Hearing the movement from Bai Yao’s bed, he thought he had accidentally woken Bai Yao up.
The moment the bed curtain was lifted, he was about to apologize to Bai Yao, but he didn’t expect that the person who came down from Bai Yao’s bed was Liu Yucheng, wearing thin pajamas, and the pajamas were open like that, with all the buttons unbuttoned.
A red mark, as if pinched out by hand, was faintly visible on his fair skin.
Yan Hao’s fatigue and sleepiness from playing games all night were frightened away, and he couldn’t help but open his mouth wide.
Liu Yucheng was still like usual, he didn’t care at all what Yan Hao was standing there looking at, and expressionlessly took his razor and went into the bathroom. After washing up, he climbed back into his bed and changed his clothes.
Yan Hao’s brain seemed to have crashed. Until Liu Yucheng left with his backpack, he couldn’t squeeze out a single word.
After lying down in bed, Yan Hao picked up his phone.
Yan Hao: Holy crap, guess what I just saw?
Yan Hao: Liu Yucheng! He actually came down from Bai Yao’s bed! He actually got into Bai Yao’s bed!! Wasn’t Bai Yao in the dorm last night? If he knew, would he beat up Liu Yucheng?
He fell asleep with doubts and worries; it wasn’t until noon that Li Jinyang replied to his Wechat.
Li Jinyang: Sigh, I thought something big happened.
Li Jinyang: Bro Yao was in the dorm last night… You’ll get used to it when those two are like that, nothing to be surprised about.
In the afternoon, Liu Yucheng came out from the place where he worked part-time with his backpack. A black SUV stopped in front of him.
“I’m here to pick you up, get in the car.” Aunt Zhou lowered the car window of the passenger seat and said.
Bai Junyi was sitting in the back seat, expressionlessly flipping through her phone.
After Liu Yucheng got into the car, she said casually, “I’ve already asked for leave for you from next Monday to Wednesday. We’re leaving for your hometown now.”
Liu Yucheng said directly, “That’s too long, I can’t.”
Bai Junyi raised her head, “You don’t want to investigate the cause of your parents’ death anymore?”
“I do, but I have an experiment class next Tuesday…”
He could ask for leave from other classes, but if he didn’t go to the experiment class, then Bai Yao would have to do the experiment all alone, and Liu Yucheng couldn’t help but worry just imagining it.
“I’ve already asked around, you’re with Dudu for the experiment class, right? He can do it himself, you can just tell him that you have something to go back to your hometown for. He’s also a student from out of town, he won’t misunderstand.”
“There’s something I want to ask you. Why does Bai Yao always have nightmares when he sleeps alone at night?”
Liu Yucheng felt that it was most appropriate to ask her directly about this. However, her answer shocked Liu Yucheng very much.
“What nightmare? How come I don’t know?”
“He just doesn’t like being alone, he’s been like that since he was a kid. A boy is afraid of nightmares, it seems he needs to exercise more.”
After Bai Junyi finished speaking, she lowered her head again and continued looking at her phone. From her expression, Liu Yucheng couldn’t tell how much she cared about this matter.
In the afternoon, Bai Yao received a Wechat from Peach Milk.
Bai Yao was already a little numb to Peach Milk’s inquiries like, “Why did you suddenly drop offline last night?” and “No contact all night,” and replied with a few perfunctory words.
Then, Peach Milk said that he had taken on a big job – to do temporary dubbing for a TV series.
Moreover, in the next few days, he might not be able to reply to messages in time, and he wouldn’t be able to get on the game, hoping that Bai Yao wouldn’t be angry about this.
Bai Yao was a little suspicious, but he just replied with an “okay,” and didn’t keep asking about anything.
That night, Liu Yucheng didn’t return to the dorm.
Bai Yao thought for a while and left a message for Peach Milk: You’re doing dubbing, so you don’t have time to sleep at night either? Or is there no place to charge your phone, or is there no signal?
Bai Yao himself felt that this was very forced. Liu Yucheng was clearly in a situation where he couldn’t look at his phone, or rather, there was someone else beside him, and he couldn’t reply to messages in front of that person.
“Bai Yao, there’s something, I’ve been wondering about it all day, can I ask you…?”
Yan Hao was in the dorm tonight. Bai Yao noticed that since he woke up and saw himself, he had been looking like he wanted to say something but didn’t. Now he finally opened his mouth to ask.
“There’s nothing you can’t ask. Liu Yucheng slept in my bed last night.”
Bai Yao said directly, “There was a power outage last night, and it was very cold in the dorm. We could only warm each other like this.”
“Oh, oh, is that so? You scared me.”
Yan Hao breathed a sigh of relief. “I was thinking, after you two broke up, you’re not on good terms when you meet, how could you sleep in the same bed. I don’t know what’s going on with the circuit in our school…”
Several days passed, and Liu Yucheng didn’t return to the dorm, nor did he come to school for classes.
At first, Bai Yao would still receive Peach Milk’s explanations; but in the following days, even if Bai Yao pretended to accidentally dial a voice call to him, he didn’t reply to Bai Yao at all, just like he was dead.
Even during the most indulgent time that Bai Yao thought the two of them had, it wouldn’t be like this.
In the experiment class on Tuesday afternoon, Bai Yao asked Teaching Assistant Xu, and Teaching Assistant Xu only said that Liu Yucheng did have something to do and had asked for leave.
Fortunately, the experiment in this class was relatively simple. With Li Jinyang and other students helping out, Bai Yao managed to complete the experiment.
In class, Teaching Assistant Xu also explained in detail the group presentation in the lecture hall next Friday. Bai Yao was distracted while looking at the scoring items on the form. He couldn’t even imagine what it would be like for him and Liu Yucheng to stand together on the stage in the lecture hall.
On Thursday night, Bai Yao logged into the game, and the long-awaited message icon finally lit up.
There were a total of four messages, three of which were system-generated advertisements for new fashion events, and only one was a message from Peach Milk.
Peach Milk: Baby, I’m sorry, my phone broke again [cry]. I was supposed to be able to go back today, but some unexpected things happened… When I get back, I’ll sing for you, okay? Please don’t be angry with me [aggrieved].
Peach Milk’s avatar is now gray, and he is not online. This message was sent in the early hours of today, at 5:03 am.
Bai Yao sat in front of the computer and read this message over and over again in his heart, as if he would get more messages if he read it a few more times, and Liu Yucheng would be able to tell him the truth.
Half an hour passed, and Bai Yao finally closed the game, not replying anything, and not sending any more messages to Peach Milk.
It was another Friday night, Li Jinyang vaguely felt that Bai Yao’s mood had been bad recently, and said that he wouldn’t go home this weekend and would stay in the dorm to accompany Bai Yao.
Bai Yao pretended to be fine, and said with a relaxed expression, what could be wrong with me? I’ve been playing too many games this week, and I haven’t even written my presentation script yet, there’s only one week left, how worrying.
That’s what he said, but Bai Yao could still stay in the dorm alone last semester, but now he feels uncomfortable after staying for a while.
He even secretly lay on Liu Yucheng’s bed for a long time, hugging Liu Yucheng’s quilt, hoping that Liu Yucheng could come back at this time and catch him in the act, and then the two of them could have a big fight, which would be much better than how he feels now.
But waiting and waiting, Bai Yao couldn’t wait any longer, so he changed his clothes and wandered around near the school, just to solve his rumbling stomach.
It was already past dinner time, and not many shops were still open on the street. Bai Yao walked on the street for a long time with his hands in his pockets, walked to a small alley, and three or four people wearing masks and black hats suddenly jumped out and surrounded him.
“Don’t move if you want to live.”
A knife was held against Bai Yao’s neck.
Bai Yao almost immediately recognized the voice of this person holding the knife and wearing a mask.
It was Liu Angran.
There were hardly any passersby who would pass by here, and probably no one could save him, so Bai Yao had to stand in place, not daring to move.
“What do you want to do?”
“Come with us first.”
Liu Angran raised his chin, signaling him to walk into the dark alley over there.
He gently shook the small knife in his hand, and the sharp blade immediately left a thin red mark on Bai Yao’s neck.
Bai Yao felt regret for the first time.
Why didn’t he listen to his mother before and bring two bodyguards with him when he went out?
