Chapter 83: The Merman Comes Ashore

At the institute, Tan Fei never expected that on his first day back, Song Qiu Yi would actually run away with the mermaid. This incident alarmed all the senior staff at the institute. They quickly issued orders to pursue Song Qiu Yi and the mermaid worldwide.

Because the mermaid research was not yet mature, they had not implanted a tracker in the mermaid, which meant all those pursuing the mermaid didn’t know where to find them.

Tan Fei recalled Tony and Duke, who had gone with Song Qiu Yi to capture the mermaid originally. He explained the situation of these two to his superiors, “These two, Tony and Duke, once captured the mermaid with Song Qiu Yi. How about we take them out to sea again this time?”

“What do you mean? Are you planning to capture another mermaid?” It was rumored that mermaids were scarce; how could they just be captured whenever they wanted? Just getting the previous one was already a miracle.

Facing the leaders’ doubts, Tan Fei confidently said, “No, I mean go out to sea to capture Song Qiu Yi. Since he has a mermaid with him now, he will definitely appear on the sea.”

Several leaders exchanged glances and pondered for a moment, “Alright, but besides you and them, the institute will also send others to search.” They wouldn’t place all their hope on just three people.

When the meeting ended, only one old man remained. Tan Fei was called and asked to stay by the old man.

“This time when you go out to sea, I don’t care what method you use, you must first get the mermaid research data.” The old man squinted his cloudy eyes, his voice full of threat and hidden meaning.

Tan Fei knew well how many of his weaknesses were in this man’s hands and dared not refuse, so he could only brace himself and say he would not disappoint him.

Only then did the old man look at him with satisfaction and say something meaningful, “Come back soon.”

After saying that, the old man coughed violently, supporting himself with a cane, and left with a hunched back.

After he left the meeting room, Tan Fei waited until he could no longer hear the disgusting coughing before he dared to curse, “Old geezer.”

The door to the meeting room was knocked on again soon after. It was Tony and Duke, who had rushed over after receiving the leaders’ message. They were a bit excited when they heard they were going out to sea again to capture a mermaid.

They entered the meeting room, and Tan Fei exchanged pleasantries with them with a smile. It wasn’t long before he extracted the information he wanted from their mouths, learning that the mermaid was captured in the Gardelia Sea area. Tan Fei set off full of confidence that very day.

After confirming they were far from land, Song Qiu Yi dropped anchor towards the seabed. Once the boat stopped, he went to get Yan Ye’s food for the day.

Entering the room, Song Qiu Yi discovered that Yan Ye had lost many scales. He picked them up and counted them, there were exactly seven. Although the color was duller compared to the scales currently on his body, they still had collection value to Song Qiu Yi.

Song Qiu Yi put the scales into his trench coat pocket, then brought the bread to Yan Ye.

Yan Ye had watched him pick up the scales without speaking, but now seeing the person approach, he said teasingly, “Why are you picking up my scales?”

Song Qiu Yi was worried he was hungry and climbed onto the top of the water tank, wanting to feed him first.

Yan Ye used his tail with force and swam up to the top in one go. He used his teeth to take the bread from Song Qiu Yi’s hand and supported his arms on the top of the glass.

This time, the water tank Song Qiu Yi made was not enclosed, but completely open at the top, allowing Yan Ye to expose his upper body above the water surface.

This way, Yan Ye could also hold and eat the dry bread himself, and didn’t need Song Qiu Yi to feed him anymore.

However, for now, neither of them had this idea; their way of getting along was still the same as before.

Song Qiu Yi waited for him to finish eating the bread before slowly saying, “It’s so beautiful, it would be a waste to throw it away.” How could he bear to throw away such beautiful scales?

Yan Ye raised an eyebrow, “Then if I shed more next time, I’ll give them all to you?”

It was rare for mermen to shed scales. Besides fighting with other marine beasts, it only happened when they were dehydrated.

Song Qiu Yi found that whenever they were at sea, the merman would always give him things. Last time it was a gem, this time it was scales. It seemed this merman wasn’t hostile. He should have been living in the deep sea, but was kept in such a small water tank by himself, and yet he still gave him such precious gifts. This special treatment, he only hoped the merman would give it to him alone.

If the merman were to treat someone else like this, he would definitely snatch away whatever that person got from the merman!

It was a good night tonight, the sea surface was calm, and so was the boat. Until the sound of crashing came from the kitchen, Yan Ye was curious how Song Qiu Yi was making such a big commotion. His body swam upwards. Because his eyes didn’t have the ability to see through, he couldn’t see what Song Qiu Yi was doing in the kitchen next door.

About half an hour later, Song Qiu Yi came over carrying a plate of something stir-fried that was completely black, with some dirt on his cheeks.

“You… were cooking just now?” Yan Ye asked in disbelief.

Song Qiu Yi put the food on the dining table, looking like he intended to eat it, “Yeah, I just wanted to try.”

Although he had prepared a lot of bread, there would come a day when it ran out. What’s more, Yan Ye also liked to eat bread, so he had to save it for him.

Besides, cooking wasn’t difficult. It was just a bit scary when pouring the oil, the pan kept crackling, so Song Qiu Yi poured out the oil and made an egg fried rice without oil again. The result was what Yan Ye was seeing now.

“I can tell it’s your first try!” Yan Ye shook his head helplessly, unable to bear for him to eat it. There were no doctors or hospitals at sea; what if he got sick from eating it?

Yan Ye was a bit worried, “Don’t eat it, you’ll get sick.”

Song Qiu Yi stopped the action of picking up his spoon, thought carefully for a moment, then looked at the egg fried rice with regret.

The egg fried rice he made was indeed different from the egg fried rice eaten in the institute’s cafeteria. It seemed a bit black. What if, as Yan Ye said, he got a stomach ache? It would be troublesome, especially since they were at sea now.

Thinking that the people from the institute might be capturing them, Song Qiu Yi decisively gave up on this bowl of egg fried rice and rewarded it to the unlucky fish in the sea.

He came in after pouring out the rice. Yan Ye told him to come over and wiped the dirt off his face with his finger, “If you want to eat something, tell me, and I’ll make it for you.”

A merman cooking for a human – this was something Song Qiu Yi couldn’t have imagined before.

Song Qiu Yi blinked, hesitated for a while, then still asked, “Can you cook?”

Yan Ye took off his glasses, looked into his eyes, and smiled gently, “A little. What do you want to eat?”

    “Egg fried rice!”

After Song Qiu Yi said what he wanted to eat, a tail leaped out of the water tank, and under Song Qiu Yi’s surprised gaze, slowly moved towards the kitchen.

Yan Ye entered the kitchen, and Song Qiu Yi followed him in. He stared intently at Yan Ye’s tail, surprised that he could stand upright. This made him feel like he had discovered a new continent.
