    Chapter 80: Merfolk Coming Ashore

Song Qiuyi was not trying to scare Tan Fei. He needed to use the hands of those above him to investigate this matter. He did not believe that the teacher had truly instructed Tan Fei to do this.

Even if the teacher really wanted to research merfolk, he would only borrow Song Qiuyi, not someone who had no interest in merfolk at all.

Tan Fei was kicked out of the laboratory, awaiting tomorrow’s disciplinary notice from above.

Song Qiuyi clenched the agent in his palm, his gaze fixed on the merfolk. He was completely awake now, his mind entirely focused on analyzing Tan Fei’s words.

Yan Ye, however, was interested in what he held. “This agent is contraband, right?”

Song Qiuyi’s thoughts were pulled back. He opened his palm, showing Yan Ye the item. “Yes, this is an agent developed in a laboratory ten years ago that was supposed to cause physical mutation in humans. But the agent failed. Not only could it not cause physical mutation, but it also became a poison that takes lives.”

“So, Tan Fei wanted my life?” Yan Ye asked, a dangerous glint flashing in his eyes.

Song Qiuyi looked at the item in his hand, unsure. “I don’t know about him. This medicine has been tested on humans and animals, with different effects. For animals, this agent can make them unconscious for three days and nights.”

Yan Ye understood, stroking his chin. “Then he must have wanted to knock me out and then extract my blood!”

Coming in secretly in the middle of the night meant he definitely didn’t want people to know, so it could only be to take blood. After all, if there were any other minor actions, Song Qiuyi would have found out when he came to see it tomorrow. Since Tan Fei didn’t want Song Qiuyi to discover it, this was the only possibility.

Song Qiuyi pondered, nodding his head. “It’s highly possible. But why would he be so anxious?”

He had already joined Laboratory 52, was he still in such a hurry?

Yan Ye shook his head, unclear. “Then how do you plan to handle this agent? I don’t want to sleep for three days and nights like an animal, or like a human, never wake up!”

Song Qiuyi had a serious face from the moment he appeared tonight until now. “I won’t let this happen again!”

Yan Ye nodded, seemingly believing his words, but remained suspicious of Tan Fei’s explanation for the agent’s origin. The teacher in the Book of Reincarnation was truly missing and never reappeared later.

Song Qiuyi’s solution to prevent this from happening again was to move his sleeping place into the laboratory. He planned to eat and live with Yan Ye, just like on the ship before, so no one could harm Yan Ye under his nose.

This was the first time Yan Ye had played the role of being protected. He finally understood how the person he used to protect felt, probably the same feeling of warmth, giving rise to a sense of happiness.

Song Qiuyi made his sleeping place ready, then came over with a bag of bread. “Want some?”

Yan Ye smiled and swam closer to him, opening his mouth naturally, waiting for Song Qiuyi to feed him.

Song Qiuyi looked at his face through the glass pane, his gaze lingering on the merfolk’s eyes.

Those narrow, deep eyes, with his reflection mirrored in the black pupils, dark and bright. Could such a pair of eyes truly shed pearls?

Song Qiuyi was lost in thought, subconsciously asking what he had read in merfolk books, “Is it true that merfolk cry tears that turn into pearls?”

Yan Ye hadn’t cried since coming to this world, so he naturally hadn’t shed tears that turned into pearls. However, merfolk definitely shed tears that turn into pearls. The sadder, more painful, or more difficult the merfolk are, the more crystalline, translucent, and full their pearl tears become.

“It’s true. Do you want pearls?” Yan Ye asked. He wasn’t sure why Song Qiuyi suddenly brought this up, or if he also wanted pearls.

Merfolk collect all their pearls, and when they have a partner, they exchange them with each other.

Song Qiuyi had seen pearls before, but never merfolk pearls. His gaze was curious, wondering how these eyes could cry pearls. “If you cry someday, give me the pearls. If not, that’s fine.”

He didn’t immediately ask Yan Ye to cry, but said “if you cry someday,” which was completely different. It also made Yan Ye realize that Song Qiuyi had already fallen for him, but he hadn’t yet discovered it himself.

Yan Ye maintained the good traditions of the merfolk, smiling gently. “Merfolk’s pearls are only given to those they like.”

Song Qiuyi’s eyelashes fluttered slightly. He lowered his chin and fixed his gaze on Yan Ye. A strange possessiveness rose in his heart again. “You are my merfolk, you can only give them to me!”

Yan Ye replied unmoved, “But you only see me as an experimental creature. You captured me from the ocean, locked me in a tank, deprived me of my freedom, and even let someone almost harm me!”

His string of accusations made Song Qiuyi frown tightly.

Because everything Yan Ye said was done by Song Qiuyi. He didn’t think there was anything wrong with what he had done. This was something he had wanted to do since he was a child – to research this legendary creature.

Only one thing was different from what he had wanted to do: he shouldn’t have let someone almost harm it.

Thinking this, Song Qiuyi’s eyes filled with gloom. It was all Tan Fei’s fault. It must be because he scared Yan Ye, making Yan Ye not want to give him pearls.

Tan Fei, who was still waiting anxiously for the disciplinary notice from above tomorrow, never expected that Song Qiuyi had put another mark against him.

Tan Fei couldn’t sleep for the rest of the night, feeling tormented inside. The next day, as soon as it was light, he was taken away.

Song Qiuyi directly recounted the events of last night to the leaders above, adding fuel to the fire. When talking about Tan Fei trying to use the agent on Yan Ye, he insisted that Tan Fei wanted to kill the merfolk.

Song Qiuyi somehow obtained a report. The report stated that an adult elephant injected with the agent, although it woke up after being unconscious for three days and nights, died a week later from multiple organ failure, which was related to the agent.

After reading the report, several leaders’ gazes became like daggers. Such a valuable creature, if it suddenly died, and before being fully understood, would be a huge loss to their research institute.

Under immense pressure, Tan Fei was unable to argue his case. Several times he tried to turn his gaze towards that person, but each time he received a threatening look. He could only look at Song Qiuyi with resentful eyes. “I didn’t want to kill this merfolk. I was just too eager for research progress, which is why I thought of using this agent to knock out the merfolk and extract some of his blood for research.”

He said this with apparent sincerity, as if everything was truly just for research.

Song Qiuyi didn’t want to let him off so easily. “Even if you did this for research, aren’t you worried that the merfolk might become stressed and commit suicide? If I hadn’t arrived in time, he might have died in the glass.”

When Tan Fei thought about the scene of the merfolk slapping the glass with its tail, he couldn’t see any sign of it being a stress-induced attempt at suicide. It looked more like it was calling for Song Qiuyi to save it.
