Chapter Seventy-Three The Merman Comes Ashore
Yan Ye wouldn’t know what was going on in Cris’s mind. He still needed to return to Song Qiuyi’s boat, so he could only make his conversation with Cris brief, reminding her that this sea area was currently very dangerous.
“The humans on the boat want to capture mermen for research. We should leave this sea area first,” Yan Ye said, pretending to be worried.
“Okay, I was planning to leave this sea area as soon as the storm left,” Cris said, still feeling lingering fear. She was already afraid of human fishing nets, and hearing that humans wanted to catch them for research made her want to leave here even faster.
Yan Ye escorted Cris part of the way. When they parted, he didn’t forget to remind her, “If you’re bored, you can read these books. Also, humans are very cunning. Never approach them easily.”
“I understand. I wish you the best in finding your own domain soon,” Cris sincerely wished him well.
Originally, Cris wanted to invite Yan Ye to go to the next ocean with her, but Yan Ye couldn’t agree, so he had to make an excuse that he was going to find a domain. Only then did Cris regretfully give up.
The sea breeze at night carried a strong salty and damp smell, which wasn’t very comfortable when blowing on one’s face. Song Qiuyi raised his wrist and looked at the time, his brows tightly furrowed. It wasn’t time yet.
Yan Ye returned after a hearty meal. He timed it just right. The moment he surfaced, it was one in the morning, meeting a pair of eyes as dark as ink. The young man waiting for him on the stern deck of the boat threw him a supposed antidote.
Yan Ye caught it accurately. After eating it, he jumped onto the boat. Perhaps it was because the explosive power of his fish tail was astonishing; Song Qiuyi’s gaze towards his fish tail became malicious again.
“You haven’t forgotten what I said before, right? Don’t stick any more strange needles into me,” Yan Ye felt it was necessary to remind him.
Song Qiuyi walked up to him, his fringe falling over his brows. He lowered his head slightly, his voice slow, “Didn’t forget.”
He didn’t forget now, but whether he would forget later was uncertain. How could one do research without sticking needles? This was truly a strange request! A hint of a smile curved at Song Qiuyi’s lips.
Yan Ye saw it, his eyes deepening. He wanted to warn him, but felt it might not be useful, so he could only let it be for now.
After being put back into the water tank, Yan Ye found that there were many more things in the room. There were some books, a desk, and a single mattress. These were all moved in after he left.
“You’re going to live here?”
Song Qiuyi nodded, holding something that looked like a notebook and recording something.
His desk was directly facing the water tank, so he could observe the merman in the water tank as soon as he looked up.
Yan Ye guessed that what he was writing was probably related to himself, so he asked, “Why do you want to catch mermen so much?”
Finally, Song Qiuyi put down his pen, his voice surprised, “Mermen? Aren’t you mermaids?”
“In ancient times, we were called Jiaoren. Later, we were called mermaids,” Yan Ye patiently explained, very fond of seeing expressions other than indifference on this person’s face.
Song Qiuyi furrowed his brows, then wrote another line of text with his pen. After writing, he asked again, “You seem to know a lot about us humans?”
Yan Ye smiled; he couldn’t answer that.
Song Qiuyi lowered his head and started writing information about Jiaoren in his teacher’s diary, and he also changed his teacher’s mermaid diary to a Jiaoren diary.
After finishing the change, he asked the Jiaoren again, “Do you have a name?”
If he had a name, it would be much easier for him to write in his diary later.
“Yan Ye.”
Song Qiuyi quickly wrote down these two characters in his notebook. He wrote them very naturally, without even needing to ask which characters they were. Only after finishing did he remember this point. Song Qiuyi opened his mouth, wanting to ask, but a voice in his heart seemed to tell him, it was these two characters!
Song Qiuyi’s fingers holding the pen tightened. He thought in confusion, then heard the voice of the Jiaoren… Yan Ye, “What’s your name?”
“Song Qiuyi.” Song Qiuyi blurted out these three characters almost without thinking.
A name is the beginning of understanding a person. A trace of a smile appeared in Yan Ye’s eyes. He generously gave Song Qiuyi the things Cris had given him.
A small box full of gems, which could be exchanged for a large sum of money. These were not of much use to him, being a Jiaoren.
Song Qiuyi was not short of money; he was a professor at the research institute, and his monthly salary was high, but compared to the gems Yan Ye gave him, it was still little. One gem was worth two months of his salary.
When Song Qiuyi opened the gem box, he was shocked, “For me?”
“Yes.”
“Why give me this?” Song Qiuyi’s voice was puzzled. He took off his glasses and picked up a crystal-clear black gem. The color of this gem was the same as his tail; it was beautiful!
Yan Ye noticed that the first thing he picked up was the black gem, then looked at his own tail. He was in a great mood, “I’m giving you these, so please don’t have any bad ideas about my tail anymore, okay?”
Song Qiuyi wanted to put down the gems and then tell him no.
Yan Ye flicked his tail, his voice full of suggestion, “Do you know you almost poked me there last time?”
Song Qiuyi looked at him in confusion, sizing up his tail, “Where?”
Song Qiuyi truly didn’t know the physical structure of mermaids, because he hadn’t really studied them. This was the first time, so he wasn’t pretending to be foolish; he genuinely didn’t know.
Yan Ye’s voice was low and dangerous, “A man’s third leg.”
Song Qiuyi froze for a second. Yan Ye thought he would blush like before, but unexpectedly, Song Qiuyi looked at him openly and honestly, finally focusing on the wrong place, “I will avoid that place next time!”
In other words, Song Qiuyi still hadn’t given up on his tail.
Yan Ye was defeated by him and chose to turn his back to him.
Song Qiuyi wrote another entry in his diary: the gender of the Jiaoren. After finishing, he started clearing his desk and preparing for sleep.
The room was dim, and the sound of water in the tank slowly quieted down. A gentle goodnight was sent out, the Jiaoren’s voice making it easier for the tired person to fall asleep.
The next day, the ship set sail again. Cliff chewed on his bread, holding the helm and humming a tune from his hometown.
Tony walked over and asked him, “How many more days until we arrive?”
Duke was also eating breakfast, “I’m already looking forward to getting back to the research institute and seeing everyone’s incredible expressions.”
Cliff was in a good mood, having earned five million US dollars in less than a month, “If it weren’t for the damn storm, we would have arrived early.”
“That’s great,” Tony said excitedly, couldn’t help stretching.
He and Duke were looking forward to returning to the research institute to participate in the mermaid research and hear the exclamations of their colleagues.
This short sea expedition, for them, was clearly worthwhile. Maybe they would be remembered for a lifetime by future generations, praised for their courage and contribution.
Cliff was smiling cheerfully. For him, being an ordinary person, he wasn’t that interested in mermaids; the five million US dollars was what he wanted.
