Chapter Index

    Is this even human language?

The factory representative who came to collect the ducks was first stunned, then became furious.

He stared at Rong Ziyan, sizing him up and down. He wanted to immediately lash out, but seeing Old Wu standing behind Rong Ziyan, he didn’t dare to act rashly.

One of the reasons the factory chose to cooperate here was because the place was remote and the people were simple, in other words, easy to fool.

But Rong Ziyan had a Beijing accent and looked like he was being treated like royalty, which made them feel that he was not so simple.

As for Rong Ziyan introducing himself as a veterinarian from Beijing, he didn’t believe a word of it.

He’d seen many vets. Ninety percent of them were covered in animal smells and looked like poor bumpkins.

The person in front of him, however, was gentle and handsome, more like a scholar studying folklore.

Although this representative was arrogant, he knew not to get his sister into trouble, so he cautiously asked, “What exactly are you here for?”

Rong Ziyan didn’t answer, but instead asked the village chief, “Do you still have the contract?”

“Yes, yes, we do.” The village chief quickly had someone bring it to Rong Ziyan.

Rong Ziyan carefully read it through and found that the contract was actually very simple. Instead of the village raising ducks to sell to the factory, it was more like the factory was hiring them to raise ducks.

The important thing was that many of the clauses were extremely harsh and not explained elsewhere, so it was hard to say whether this contract was valid.

Rong Ziyan wasn’t in this line of work, but he did know people who studied law.

After that unfortunate show ended, Rong Ziyan had stayed in contact with those academic elites who had participated in the competition.

Rong Ziyan remembered that the group leader was a law student, but these issues would have to wait to be resolved.

The arrogant factory manager’s brother-in-law in front of him, however, could be dealt with first.

So Rong Ziyan walked up to him and asked, “Did you order these ducks?”

“Yes! So since they raised our ducks poorly, they naturally have to compensate us!” The factory manager’s brother-in-law felt much more confident after seeing Rong Ziyan get the contract.

Rong Ziyan: “So, the ducks actually belong to your factory, not the villagers?”

“Of course! We already paid for them.”

“I see.” Rong Ziyan nodded, then waved for Luo Xia to come over.

“Lend me your phone to log into the veterinarian system.”

“Alright.” Luo Xia didn’t know what Rong Ziyan wanted to do, but he cooperated.

Having both graduated from the Veterinary Department of the Agricultural University, Luo Xia had also obtained his veterinarian’s license long ago.

So he used his account to log into the veterinarian system.

Rong Ziyan: “Pull up the price list.”

“Okay.” Luo Xia did as he was asked.

As for Rong Ziyan, he started keeping track of expenses based on the price list displayed.

“There are a total of two thousand six hundred sick ducks.”

“Biochemical blood test, 260 per duck, CT scan, 120 per duck, duck plague test, 80 per duck, pathogen extraction and testing, 300 per duck…”

He wrote and read as he went along, and the cost of treating one duck was more than two thousand yuan.

The factory manager’s brother-in-law was completely dumbfounded. After a while, he suddenly reacted and interrupted, “What are you calculating this for?”

Rong Ziyan pointed to the sick ducks beside him, “To ask your factory for money!”

“Clear prices, the state has extra benefits for the agricultural and forestry breeding industry, so most of the costs for treating duck plague at livestock stations are covered by the state.”

“But according to your contract and what you just said, these ducks are not being raised by the village, but are samples you sent over.”

“I’ll ask you, is the legal representative of your factory a rural resident?”

“How could that be? My brother-in-law is a country bumpkin!” The factory manager’s brother-in-law immediately retorted.

Rong Ziyan nodded, adding another point, “Oh, urban residents don’t get exemptions for house call fees either.”

“Based on my house call fee in Beijing, it’s 100 yuan per duck for a registration fee. There are more than two thousand three hundred here, so rounding down, you need to pay me 23,000 yuan for the house call fee first.”

“Then, based on a treatment fee of 2,000 yuan per duck, you still need to pay our team 260,000 yuan for medicine.”

“Also, more than two hundred ducks died due to their severe illness. But we handled the disposal of the bodies, so you still need to pay 70 yuan for the disposal fee of each duck, which comes out to 1,400 yuan.”

“What did you just say? You wanted to take the ducks away, right? Sure, once you pay, you can take them all.” Rong Ziyan always handled things quickly and neatly. Once he finished speaking, he had clearly calculated the bill and handed the notebook directly to the factory manager’s brother-in-law.

The factory manager’s brother-in-law had never met anyone like Rong Ziyan before. He couldn’t process it for a while. When he finally realized what was happening and looked at the string of zeros on the notebook, his temper, which he had been holding back, completely exploded.

    “Are you fucking with me?”

How could treating a few broken ducks cost hundreds of thousands? He must be playing him for a fool.

But Rong Ziyan looked at him with an expression that said he was a fool, and sighed, “No one believes the truth these days.”

As he spoke, Rong Ziyan recited a phone number to him, “The National Veterinary Service System. You can call and ask directly, if a non-farmer gets treatment for pet animals, is this the price.”

The man cautiously took it, first searched on Baidu, and found that Rong Ziyan was right. Then, in front of everyone, he actually made the call.

Unexpectedly, the operator answered and, after hearing his question and request, actually told him, “That’s right, this price is indeed the official quote given by our veterinary system.”

“So, treating duck plague in one duck costs more than two thousand yuan?”

“Of course. That’s the price for pets. Only livestock gets subsidies,” the operator on the other end said righteously.

“Bullshit! They are all meat ducks, how can they be pets?” The factory manager’s brother-in-law suddenly realized that something wasn’t right.

But the operator on the other end chuckled, “Buddy, do you have a breeding farm business license?”

    “…No.”

“Then what about a breeder qualification certificate?”

    “…No.”

“Okay, you must be a rural resident, right!”

    “…No.”

“If you don’t have anything, what else would an urban dweller raising ducks be other than pets?” The operator on the other end laughed. “Even that young master who raised internet-famous ducks, when his ducks got sick and went to the livestock station for treatment, that’s how much they were charged. It was all over the internet before. Since you’re in the duck business, haven’t you seen the news?”

The factory manager’s brother-in-law was about to explode, “Damn it! You guys are just greedy businessmen!”

As soon as he said this, the operator on the other end was unhappy, “The prices are clearly marked, and it’s approved by the Bureau of Industry and Commerce. If you have any questions, you can go directly to the Bureau of Industry and Commerce to complain.”

“No questions, I’m going to hang up.” The customer service lady on the other end was very assertive and immediately ended the call.

As for the factory manager’s brother-in-law, he was completely dumbfounded. He stared at his phone for a long time, unable to recover.

Rong Ziyan, on the other hand, wore a warm smile and, with Old Wu and the others, walked up to surround him.

“Sir, you can now confirm that we were telling the truth, right!”

“You… What do you want to do?” The factory manager’s brother-in-law stared at Old Wu and the others surrounding him with fear, instinctively wanting to retreat, but Rong Ziyan grabbed his wrist.

“Don’t be scared! Let’s just talk about these treatment fees. When will you be paying the 260,000?”

    “…” [Fear value 3000]

The factory manager’s brother-in-law instinctively avoided Rong Ziyan’s gaze, and suddenly felt like he was in a bad situation.

Especially since Old Wu and the others were burly and strong. When their imposing presence wasn’t apparent, they seemed like mere followers. But now that they were glaring at him, they looked like gangsters who carried machetes out to collect protection money.

“Don’t, don’t, don’t come over!” The factory manager’s brother-in-law’s voice sounded like a pig being slaughtered. “Let’s talk this out!”

“This factory isn’t mine. I can’t handle such a huge sum of money alone. You have to let me go back and discuss it with my sister and brother-in-law.”

“That works too!” Rong Ziyan sized him up. “Call them now! Tell your brother-in-law to bring the money to redeem you.”

The factory manager’s brother-in-law couldn’t resist. Under the pressure of Old Wu’s gesture of patting his bulging waist, he immediately called his sister with trembling hands.

The boss lady quickly answered the phone. After hearing her brother’s rambling retelling, she cursed in exasperation, “You’re useless!”

Then she told him to pass the phone to Rong Ziyan.

Rong Ziyan shook his head, indicating that he would not take it. In the end, the boss lady had no choice but to ask for Rong Ziyan’s phone number.

So, a few minutes later, Rong Ziyan’s phone finally rang.

Rong Ziyan glanced at it, it was an unknown number. Not only did he not answer, but he also blacklisted the number after half a minute.

At the same time, he said to Old Wu, go and invite the police comrades from the town, and say that this person is trying to avoid paying the livestock station fees.

At first, Old Wu thought Rong Ziyan was joking, but then he realized that Rong Ziyan’s attitude was very serious. He had no choice but to do as he was told.

“The police won’t believe this nonsense of yours.”

Rong Ziyan logged into his veterinary system. Rong Ziyan was now a veterinarian registered under the research institute. Coming here to treat the ducks was just an off-site assignment.

The factory manager’s brother-in-law watched Rong Ziyan follow the rules, item by item, listing expenses and uploading the income, and he finally believed that what Rong Ziyan said earlier was true. At this point, he was completely devastated.

But suddenly, the system received a prompt: [Anger value from the boss lady 5000]

System: Holy shit, holy shit! How did you anger her like that?

Rong Ziyan: I don’t know. Maybe it’s because of her troublesome brother!

The system was silent for a while, feeling that things were not as simple as Rong Ziyan made them out to be.

Sure enough, after a while, the factory manager’s brother-in-law’s phone rang again.

The factory manager’s brother-in-law picked up the phone with trembling hands in front of everyone. He was immediately greeted by a torrent of abuse from his sister.

“That veterinarian from Beijing must be crazy! He deliberately doesn’t answer the phone and then uses a ringtone to curse at me? I must report him!”

The boss lady’s voice was too loud, and everyone heard it.

Luo Xia curiously looked at Rong Ziyan and asked him in a low voice, “What ringtone?”

Rong Ziyan looked completely innocent, “It was a free gift when I topped up my phone. I’ve been using it for several months.”

“…” Luo Xia subconsciously called Rong Ziyan.

After a brief “beep,” the ringtone that made the boss lady so angry she wanted to vomit finally sounded.

“Wenzhou, Zhejiang, Wenzhou, Zhejiang, the leather factory, the leather factory, has closed down! The factory manager ran away with his mistress!”

    Everyone: Holy crap!

The factory manager’s brother-in-law was utterly despairing. No wonder his sister was angry. Because he really did have such a younger female cousin, young and beautiful, who recently became very intimate with his brother-in-law who was the factory manager.
