    Chapter 49: Auction

Gu Zhong’s head buzzed from the shout, and his arrogance subsided slightly. After realizing what happened, he turned around, glaring with his triangular eyes narrowed, looking as if he wanted to beat up the person who spoke.

The person who shouted didn’t even blink, holding a basket as she strode over menacingly, pushing Gu Zhong aside.

Lin Sui said in surprise, “Auntie Li, what are you doing here?”

“Oh, it’s just that you haven’t been around for a few days. I made too much sauerkraut recently, so I brought you some,” Auntie Li said, instantly switching to a gentle and kind tone as she handed Lin Sui a basket. “Did you have fun on your trip? Look at your little face, you’ve lost weight after just one trip.”

Lin Sui touched his face; he hadn’t lost weight, but had actually gained a bit compared to a few days ago. Maybe that’s just what older women think when they see you.

“Thank you,” Lin Sui said, accepting the basket with both hands, looking obedient. “I was just wondering what to eat lately; your sauerkraut tastes the best. Gu Nian will definitely like it too.”

Auntie Li smiled, her eyes disappearing into wrinkles. Seeing Gu Zhong’s face darken again out of the corner of her eye, she lowered her voice and said to Lin Sui, “Little Lin, remember to tell me if you encounter any trouble. Don’t be too naive, there are a lot of weirdos these days.”

As she spoke, she shot a few warning glares at Gu Zhong, infuriating him. He rolled up his sleeves, ready to throw a punch.

Just then, the security guards arrived. Seeing this scene, they immediately rushed over and pinned Gu Zhong to the ground. Gu Zhong was just a paper tiger, looking fierce but actually having fewer muscles than Lin Sui. He was instantly immobilized, able only to curse at Lin Sui incoherently.

Lin Sui listened for a few sentences and felt like his ears were getting dirty. He apologized to Auntie Li, then closed the door and went back to find Gu Nian.

Gu Nian looked calm, as if he didn’t care about the argument outside. Seeing Lin Sui’s unpleasant expression, he frowned and asked, “Did Gu Zhong hit you?”

Lin Sui nodded and shook his head, angrily saying, “He wanted to, but the security guards stopped him first. He even wanted to hit Auntie Li and cursed so badly, it was too, too…”

Lin Sui couldn’t find a suitable word to describe it from his vocabulary after searching for a long time, but he was upset himself.

Gu Nian felt a mix of heartache and amusement. He turned his wheelchair around and went over, patting Lin Sui’s hand reassuringly. “I’ll go take a look.”

“No way!” Lin Sui refused without even thinking.

Gu Zhong had already cursed at him so harshly, he would definitely say even more hurtful things to Gu Nian if he went out there. After returning from the seaside, Gu Nian had finally become a little more cheerful. If he suddenly reverted to the erratic madman from the original book, he would definitely beat Gu Zhong to death.

Gu Nian smiled, his emotions much more stable than Lin Sui had expected. He comforted him instead, “It’s okay, aren’t there security guards outside? He can’t do anything to me.”

Lin Sui looked unconvinced. “But, if he says something…”

Gu Nian asked, “Do you think I would lose my mind over a few words from him?”

Lin Sui shook his head. “No.”

“Then there’s nothing to worry about.” Gu Nian pulled Lin Sui to the door and pushed it open without hesitation.

Gu Zhong was still cursing as he was pinned to the ground. Hearing the sound, he looked up and his expression darkened when he saw Gu Nian looking down at him. Then, as if he had thought of something, a smug look appeared on his face, and he ordered, “Gu Nian, quickly tell these people to let me go and apologize to me properly, and I might return some of Old Man Hu’s things to you.”

Gu Nian’s expression turned cold, and the bottomless black mist grew rapidly in his eyes. The temperature around him dropped several degrees, and he said in an icy voice, “I don’t know this person. Please help me throw him out.”

The two security guards didn’t hesitate. One grabbed one side and dragged him toward the entrance of the villa district.

Gu Zhong seemed not to have expected Gu Nian to be so decisive. He kicked his legs in the air and shouted, “Gu Nian! Don’t regret it! The other half of the old man’s broken jade bracelet is with my dad. If you throw me out today, I’ll immediately smash that broken thing and throw it away!”

Gu Nian’s eyes darkened, and he said coldly, “Put him down. He has something to discuss with me. Sorry for the trouble. ”

The two security guards exchanged glances and threw Gu Zhong down as instructed. Their technique was rough, and Gu Zhong landed face-first on the ground. His expensive suit was covered in dust, and he patted it a few times with distress.

“Come in,” Gu Nian said coldly, leading Lin Sui back into the villa.

Gu Zhong didn’t dare to act presumptuously anymore and quickly followed them inside.

The villa door closed, and Gu Zhong immediately put on a contemptuous face, looking at the decorations in the living room with disdain, criticizing and mocking them. “Gu Nian, I didn’t expect you to be so miserable now. What are these broken things? Not even a piece of jade.”

He picked up a small ceramic figurine placed in the entrance hall, tossed it up and down, and suddenly exclaimed in an exaggerated tone, “Oops!” followed by the sound of ceramic breaking.

“Sorry, I didn’t expect your thing to be so cheap and so delicate,” Gu Zhong said, feigning an apology. “It’s quite similar to its owner.”

“What do you mean!” Lin Sui finally couldn’t bear it anymore. He broke free from Gu Nian’s hand and rushed up to push Gu Zhong forcefully, amber eyes burning with flames.

Gu Zhong was taken aback, then revealed a sarcastic smile. He opened his lips to continue mocking, but Gu Nian interrupted in a low voice, “Say what you need to say and leave. If you keep playing these boring tricks, the security guards outside haven’t gone far.”

Hearing about the security guards, Gu Zhong’s sense of superiority couldn’t be maintained. He looked at Gu Nian with a forced smile and took out a piece of paper from his pocket, throwing it casually on the ground.

“This is an invitation to next month’s charity auction. My dad specifically asked me to bring it to you, so you must go,” Gu Zhong said, hooking the corner of his mouth. “Remember to wear formal attire. Clothes from unknown brands won’t get you in. Also, if you don’t go, don’t even think about getting the other jade bracelet the old man left behind. My dad already gave that thing to the auction.”

At this point, Gu Zhong couldn’t help but laugh smugly, glancing at Gu Nian’s legs with contempt. “But that thing isn’t worth much money. In your current state, selling your house might barely be enough to bid for it, right?”

Every sentence was aimed at suppressing Gu Nian, as if that would make him feel superior.

However, to Gu Zhong’s disappointment, Gu Nian didn’t show any change in expression from beginning to end. After he finished speaking, the other party even nodded, his posture inexplicably calm and in control.

“I understand, I will be there on time.”

    And then, nothing more.

It was as if Gu Zhong’s show of force and contemptuous mockery were like ants on the side of the road, not worth any of his attention.

Gu Zhong felt inexplicably angry. He looked around and his gaze landed on Lin Sui, who was closest to him, suddenly revealing a malicious look.

He remembered that Gu Nian seemed to like this cheap wife of his quite a bit.

He wondered if this person could still maintain this calm facade when he saw his wife being bullied.

Gu Zhong looked at Lin Sui, revealing a smile full of malice.

Lin Sui felt a chill and didn’t hesitate to glare back with wide eyes.

Hmph, he had the nerve to try to scare people with such small eyes. Let’s see who has bigger eyes!

Gu Zhong, however, rarely said anything, directly turned around and left.

Lin Sui waited until he walked out of the door before deflating like a balloon with a whoosh. His eyes blinked sourly, shedding some physiological tears.

Gu Nian pulled him to sit on the sofa, took a tissue to wipe his face, and said helplessly, “Why are you arguing with him? He’s just a fool, with nothing but bluster, no real skill.”

“I just can’t stand him, he even broke the little ceramic figurine I made,” Lin Sui said, raising his head obediently to let him wipe his eyes, his little mouth pouting angrily, and said indignantly, “When the time comes, we’ll attend that auction in full dress, blinding his eyes and letting him see that we’re not to be looked down upon.”

Gu Nian chuckled and said okay, lovingly touching his reddened eyelids with his fingertips, gently planting a kiss on them.

Lin Sui felt something approaching and subconsciously closed his eyes. Only when the warm, soft sensation came from his eyes did he realize what Gu Nian had done.

The fierce little leopard just now instantly turned into a domesticated cat, his fair skin turning red, stuttering and unable to speak, but his eyes were focused on Gu Nian, filled with love.

Gu Nian simply loved his shy appearance. He forcefully hugged him and kissed his ear.

Lin Sui grunted a few times in his arms, then allowed Gu Nian to kiss him.

Gu Zhong’s sudden appearance didn’t seem to bring any turbulence to the lives of the two people. Gu Nian continued to manage company affairs while trying to get close to his wife, and Lin Sui studied during the day and streamed live on time every night. Recently, he also added content on making handicrafts. His fan base increased again, and with the income from Sui Congzhi’s side, even without taking on advertisements, the money in his bank card was increasing rapidly.

Everything was progressing on the right track.

But thinking about it carefully, it seemed like something was different. For example, Gu Nian noticed that Lin Sui had suddenly become busy. The time he spent with him was getting shorter and shorter. His daily streaming time had also increased. He had also opened a small shop online selling handicrafts, and there were several wounds on his hands from making handicrafts.

Gu Nian specifically investigated Lin Sui’s recent social circle, worried that he had been cheated out of money by someone, but also afraid that he was worried and didn’t want to tell him. However, he found nothing. Lin Sui’s circle was as clean as a blank sheet of paper. Only Shi Qingzhou and Sui Congzhi had more frequent communication.

Day after day, anxiety and worry also increased exponentially. Finally, one day when Gu Nian and Lin Sui went for a morning walk, Gu Nian spoke.

“Have you been having any troubles lately?”

    “No, why do you ask?”

Lin Sui said in a somewhat dazed voice.

Gu Nian frowned, feeling that Lin Sui was increasingly wrong, thought for a moment and said euphemistically: “Your complexion has been very bad recently, are you feeling unwell anywhere?”

Indeed, in addition to the abnormal busy period, Lin Sui was really visibly thinner this time, like a frost-beaten eggplant, and his vitality was reduced.

Lin Sui forced a smile on his pale face, “No, I’m fine…”

Before the last syllable had even fallen, he suddenly fell to the ground with a thud. The bluestone slab pressed against the white, dazzling skin, instantly leaving red marks.

    “Lin Sui!”
