Chapter 17: Since I Already Took It

Gu Nian deliberately remained silent, almost mischievously wanting to know Lin Sui’s reaction.

Lin Sui wasn’t surprised by the lack of response. He took out the hand he had been holding behind his back, providing his own sound effects, “Ta-da! It’s a red string. The monk said the red beans on it are made of red sandalwood, which is perfect for you.”

Gu Nian’s gaze landed on Lin Sui’s hand, but he didn’t look at the red string. Instead, his attention was caught by the fair fingers.

The vibrant, bright red of the string accentuated the skin on his fingertips, making them appear even whiter. He suddenly remembered Lin Sui appearing at the wedding wearing a rose, and that silk rose that had given him a momentary illusion.

Gu Nian suppressed the flicker in his eyes and coldly turned his head away. “We have plenty of furniture made of red sandalwood at home.”

Lin Sui choked for a moment, then generously told himself not to bother arguing with others.

So he pretended not to have heard and knelt on one knee, reaching for Gu Nian’s hand.

Gu Nian quickly avoided him, frowning. “What are you doing?”

Lin Sui shook the red string in his hand, his eyes sparkling. “The monk said this can protect your safety and health. I’m going to put it on for you.”

Gu Nian pursed his lips, continuing to be cold. “I have a box of these things.”

“My grandfather got similar items from every temple in the country after my accident.”

Gu Nian looked at his unfeeling legs, his expression growing even colder, finally concluding, “So it’s useless.”

As he spoke the last two words, a flash of pain quickly crossed Gu Nian’s eyes. In reality, it wasn’t just praying to Buddha and seeking monks. He had been to every authoritative hospital in the world for treatment, but the results were uniformly despairing.

Finding Lin Sui to marry him for good luck was less of a last-ditch effort and more of a way for his grandfather to find someone to take care of him for the rest of his life.

Gu Nian had long since given up hope of recovery.

Gu Nian thought that Lin Sui would finally give up now, especially since he had rejected him so harshly.

Sure enough, the smile on Lin Sui’s face gradually faded, and the corners of his mouth that were always turned up became flat. Gu Nian gave a self-deprecating smile in his heart and was about to turn his wheelchair when the hand on the control button was unexpectedly grasped. An unfamiliar warmth spread from his palm throughout his body.

Ignoring Gu Nian’s struggle, Lin Sui stubbornly held onto his pale hand, almost forcibly putting the red string on his wrist. He held both soft hands tightly together and looked up, his amber eyes shining incredibly brightly.

A gentle breeze rustled through the lush leaves of the Bodhi tree next to them, carrying the scent of life and lifting Lin Sui’s soft hair, outlining the youth’s resolute face.

Lin Sui knelt in front of Gu Nian like a knight swearing allegiance to his prince, offering all his loyalty with both hands, his voice clear and firm, “It will protect you and help you get better. I will also be with you, Gu Nian. You will definitely, definitely be able to stand up.”

Their strange posture attracted the curious gazes of passersby, but Lin Sui seemed oblivious. His round almond eyes were fixed on Gu Nian, and nothing could shake him.

It was as if a closed little world had appeared around them, which no one else could enter. In this small space, there was only Lin Sui’s almost naive hope, and the warmth transmitted from Gu Nian’s palm.

Gu Nian stared blankly at the youth, his chest feeling as if it was blocked by something, his heart beating violently, deafeningly.

After a long while, he came back to his senses and forcefully pulled his hand away, his expression still cold, but he didn’t say anything about the red string being useless.

Lin Sui immediately smiled, the corners of his mouth lifting with joy, and his round face instantly returned to its liveliness. He hopped up to support Gu Nian’s wheelchair, thoughtfully asking, “Do you want to walk around here some more?”

Gu Nian shook his head expressionlessly, using the cover of the backpack in his arms to secretly hide the red string inside his shirt sleeve.

This thing looked silly at first glance, and only someone like Lin Sui would believe in it.

    But…

Gu Nian touched the red bean in the middle of the red string through his clothes, his expression growing even colder.

Anyway, since I already took it, it wouldn’t hurt for him to wear it for a bit.
