    Chapter 56: Sold

    Chapter 56: Sold

Pulling the man all the way to a relatively shady spot, Shen Chang’an looked back at Cheng Yi, who was following closely behind him, looking a bit silly. Shen Chang’an opened his lips, paused, and the words he wanted to use to scold him were somehow swallowed back down.

It was also his fault for not explaining it clearly to this person. Who feeds poultry like this, handful after handful?

Did he think he was feeding animals at the zoo?

After feeding for so long, probably none of the chickens, ducks, and geese had eaten much.

    “Wipe your face.”

Shen Chang’an went back into the house, took a clean towel, wet it with cold water from the sink faucet, wrung it out, and handed it to Cheng Yi.

Cheng Yi wasn’t really that hot, but his face was covered in sweat. He took the wet towel and casually wiped his face, and a few strands of hair on his forehead were unintentionally wet and stuck together, making him look a bit disheveled.

Casually throwing the towel back into the basin to wash it, he squeezed it dry and hung it on the clothes rack. Cheng Yi turned around and looked at Shen Chang’an, who was standing aside quietly watching him, and asked curiously, “An’an, what did you go do this morning?”

He hadn’t been sitting there the whole time. He searched in the house for a long time but couldn’t find Shen Chang’an. Grandma was still at home, but when he asked her, she said she didn’t know where Shen Chang’an had gone either.

Unable to find him, he had no choice but to carry the basin full of food again, move a stool, and sit there, obediently waiting for him to come back.

As Cheng Yi spoke, he walked a few steps towards Shen Chang’an, shortening the distance between them. They stood together in the corner by the sink outside the house, both tall and upright, looking inexplicably harmonious.

Shen Chang’an quietly gazed at Cheng Yi in front of him, his clear, cold eyes like a pool of still water, without the slightest ripple. He parted his thin lips slightly and said slowly in a very calm tone, “Went to the fields.”

His eyes flickered slightly, and Cheng Yi understood, but he still continued to ask, “What did you go to the fields for?”

Shen Chang’an said softly, “It’s about time to dig up the sweet potatoes. I just went to take a look. It should be around National Day that the patch of sweet potatoes at home should be dug up.”

Since Shen Chang’an started working, he hadn’t taken any more money from home. In the following years, he had been sending money home all the time, so his grandparents didn’t grow much crops. What they grew was mainly to maintain their daily lives in the countryside. Therefore, they only planted a small patch of sweet potatoes, not a lot.

What he was thinking was that when the time came, Cheng Yi and his grandparents could just stay at home, and he could bring back that little bit of sweet potatoes by himself.

Cheng Yi raised his eyebrows slightly, as if he had suddenly become interested. His handsome face wore an expectant expression as he said seriously, “Sweet potatoes? I’ve never dug them before. Take me with you when the time comes. It’ll be a lot faster if the two of us do it together.”

Cheng Yi looked at Shen Chang’an’s indifferent expression, not knowing why he was feeling down, but thinking that Shen Chang’an’s grandparents were already old, he assumed that Shen Chang’an was worried that he wouldn’t be able to manage on his own. So, Cheng Yi volunteered.

Shen Chang’an pursed his lips, his clear, cold eyes turned to look at Cheng Yi, carefully observing and distinguishing the other’s expression. He looked for a long time but couldn’t see anything. He nodded slightly, looking at Cheng Yi, and said softly, “Okay.”

Still the familiar little corner, Cheng Yi sat on a small stool in front of the stove, occasionally putting a piece of wood into the stove to help Shen Chang’an stoke the fire.

[Brother: Why did you go to City C?]

How did his brother know he came to City C?

Looking at Cheng Hua’s message, Cheng Yi really didn’t know how to explain it to his brother for a moment.

[Cy: Just came to City C to play for a few days]

The message was sent out, and within a few seconds, he received a reply, as if the other person had been waiting for his message all along.

    [Brother: Are you alone?]

    [Cy: Yes]

[Brother: Then what’s with your Moments?]

    Moments?

Cheng Yi vaguely remembered that this morning, he had spontaneously taken his phone and recorded a short video of the poultry at Shen Chang’an’s house and posted it on his Moments.

He just posted it casually and didn’t pay much attention to it himself. Now, when he opened his Moments, he saw:

Nearly twenty chickens, ducks, and geese were so hungry that they were gobbling and running around in circles, their small, bright eyes peeking at the camera all the time, their mouths wide open, their voices super loud, as if accusing the person who wasn’t giving them food.

There were already several comments below the video.

[Aunt Qin: (Likes) Where is this?]

[He Zhou: Yi-ge, why didn’t you call us to come along?]

[Lin Zhihao: Yi-ge, I’ve got my eye on that fattest duck. Can you save it for me, or send it over?]

[Gu Nancheng: This goose looks fierce. Does it peck people?]

[Brother: Dad said he likes that big rooster with the red comb. Remember to bring it back for him when you come back.]

    Cheng Yi: “…”

He didn’t expect that just posting a Moments would cause a dozen poultry at Shen Chang’an’s house to be coveted by others.

Looking at Shen Chang’an, who was cooking on the other side of the stove, Cheng Yi’s eyes flickered, and he tentatively asked with a bit of uncertainty, “An’an, do you sell your chickens?”

Shen Chang’an looked at Cheng Yi with some confusion, “Why are you asking that? Do you want to eat chicken?”

His expression was very calm, with a hint of thought in his eyes, as if as soon as Cheng Yi nodded and said ‘yes’, they could eat chicken tonight.

Cheng Yi shook his head, held up his phone for Shen Chang’an to see, and then explained, “I posted a Moments this morning, and my friends saw it and said they wanted one.”

Afraid that the other person would feel embarrassed on his account, he paused and quickly added, “But, it’s okay if you don’t want to sell them. They were just saying it on a whim, not that they definitely want one. They’ll probably forget about it in a few days.”

After taking the dishes out, Shen Chang’an asked Cheng Yi to go upstairs and call his grandmother down to eat. He didn’t say whether he was willing or not. Cheng Yi just assumed that he still needed to consider it, so he didn’t say anything more.

By the time Cheng Yi helped his grandmother down, Shen Chang’an had already brought the three dishes and one soup to the table, and he had also served three bowls of rice.

After lunch, Grandma was just about to leave with the freshly packed food when she heard Shen Chang’an ask, “Grandma, how about we sell a few of the chickens at home?”

Cheng Yi raised his head slightly to look at Shen Chang’an, whose expression was very calm.

So, the reason Shen Chang’an didn’t reply to him just now was because he hadn’t asked his grandmother’s opinion yet?

Grandma quietly looked at Shen Chang’an, frowned and thought for a moment, and finally nodded, slowly saying, “Chang’an, you decide.”

She already had half a foot in the coffin, and these things didn’t seem worth raising anymore.

“Sell them, selling them is good… just… leave one or two… to nourish your grandpa’s health.”

A trace of tears flashed in her cloudy eyes as she murmured and left with her bowl, hobbling.

Cheng Yi looked at her slowly leaving back, feeling somewhat silent, his heart inexplicably heavy. He turned his eyes to look at Shen Chang’an, only to see that the other person’s expression was still very calm.

    It was just that…

Those beautiful eyes seemed to have lost their light.
